(UK400 Club Taxonomy & Rulings 362 species) A reasonable year with 3 new species to my UK400 Club UK & Eire Life List - Chinese Pied Wagtail, Sooty Tern and Fea's Soft-plumaged Petrel (2 birds) - with many avian highlights throughout the year but most enjoyable the Hawfinch invasion. Biggest disappointments dipping Belted Kingfisher and Great Spotted Cuckoo for second year in a row. |

The Final Update: Ending the year with 2 Cattle Egrets going in to roost at Britford. Good views of Black-throated Thrush at Hook Br & 3 Ptarmigan at Glenshee having failed to get them in Feb snowstorm. Dipped at Largo bay again in poor weather. A splendiferous year considering birding for 9 months and having a broken ankle in July, 3 wonderful busy children, job commitments & teaching piano, 3 weeks in Spain & a very supportive full-time working husband who just so happens to be a splendid birder (Thank You Nicholas). Birds I didn't get: Dotterel, Collared Pratincole, Purple Heron, Short-toed Treecreeper, Great-spotted Cuckoo, Hume's Warbler, Caspian Tern, Roseate Tern, King Eider, Brunnich's Guillemot, Surf Scoter, Pallas's Warbler, Baird's Sand, Marsh Warbler, Buff-bellied Pipit, Yellow Warbler... but there were 327 species I DID GET. Cheers & Happy New Year to Andy (you are the best!), Ian, Steve, Gary, Lee, Pat, Craig, George, Tony, Dick, Geoff plus a few more... See you about!! |

2005 All done at 324 with 3 beautiful Ptarmigan at Glenshee and the BLACK-THROATED THRUSH in Somerset to finish with. Tried my hardest to keep with M the mad Doctor and although missing a lot of good birds very pleased with finding RADDE'S and GREAT GREY SHRIKE to add to the birding year for everyone. Been a difficult year working as well but well worth it especially meeting so many nice people from Scilly to the Hebrides.. Many thanks to all who contributed to the year and well done Andy. Will come back in 2 years or so when I retire from my job and then a CRIPPLING YEAR >>>>> |

TAVERNER'S CANADA GOOSE surprise on Islay 31/12 - in the last flock of Barnacles Richard Patient and I checked before we left the island - and a great reward for four days of intense 'goosing'. Each to his own and all that, but it's a major rarity in Britain! Marvellous way to finish the year for this goose fanatic and definitely my best find of 2005. Also 3 Richardson's and other splendid Islay fare. A bit more twitching than usual in 2005 to get this score and the year's highlights were four Norfolk ticks for me: Killdeer, Stilt Sandpiper, Lesser Crested Tern and Little Swift. However, plenty of time for general birding and some of the most pleasing self-find highlights of 2005: Taverner's Canada Goose, Great White Egret, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Common Rosefinch, Woodchat Shrike (identified rather than found), Yellow-browed Warblers, Red-breasted Flycatcher, 2 Wrynecks, Temminck's Stint, Parrot Crossbills, Black Brant and Richard's Pipit. Thanks to all finders of birds I was able to enjoy this year. |

Highlights of 2005: Quitting my job in early September which made hitting 300 do-able after a fairly slow start to the year! 3 weeks on Scilly in October/November - meeting some great birders, with special thanks to Gary Thoburn, Tim Harrop and Adrian Riley for your company in the field and in the pub! Self-finding Greenish Warbler, Serin, Ferruginous Duck, Yellow-browed Warbler and Little Auk during the course of the year. Scotland in May. Leach's Petrel at Bough Beech, Green Heron on Anglesey and Desert Wheatear at Caister. WORST DIPS: Killdeer, Lesser Crested Tern, Arctic Warbler, Buff-bellied Pipit and Black-throated Thrush, all of which would have been lifers. Missing Golden Eagle and Capercaillie in Scotland plus a few "easy birds" such as Goshawk, Glaucous Gull, Dotterel and Wryneck. LIFERS IN 2005: Snow Goose, Barrow's Goldeneye, Radde's, Blyth's Reed and Blackpoll Warblers, Chimney Swift, Upland Sandpiper, Grey-cheeked Thrush, Green Heron, Black Scoter, (Hooded Merganser). I'll be travelling in SE Asia and India throughout 2006, which means I won't be on this list or in the field in the UK, so great birding to everyone in 2006, and I'll see many of you in 2007! |

Pleased with the year overall, could have been better, but could have been a lot worse!! Bird of the year:Corncrakes on North Uist, closely followed by Sooty Tern. Trip of the year: North Uist in May - having been delayed at Uig ferry terminal for 8 hours I nearly gave up on this one. Finally got over to Balranald after midnight and heard Corncrakes while driving along with the windows open, followed by stunning views of several birds at 3am the next morning. Dipped on at least 20 species so the total could have been a bit higher with a bit of luck. Concentrating on lifers next year and only going for birds I actually want to, rather than ones I feel I should, sounds good at the moment but we'll see what happens when the first new bird turns up. One of the worst years for connecting with birds, having missed Belted Kingfisher, Elegant Tern, Audouins Gull, Yellow Wblr, Siberian Rubythroat and couldn't get the enthusiasm for the Chimney Swift on Scillies Managed 6 lifers in 2005. Latest: 18/11 Finally made the 300 today with the Humes Wblr at Filey. HIGHLIGHTS: Sociable Plover, BRUNNICHS GUILLEMOT, Upland Sand, G C THRUSH, Green Heron, Pallid Swift, Desert Wheatear, AG Plover, BT Thrush, LB Dowitcher, Laughing Gull, Raddes Wblr, Bee-eater, Booted Wblr, L G Shrike, SOOTY TERN, 5xCORNCRAKES,TRUMPETER FINCH,BARROW'S GOLDENEYE,Stilt Sand,G B Tern,King Eider,Lesser Scaup,Sora,WT Eagle |

UK400, includes Ireland. Seeing 262 in Norfolk and self-finding around 236 (240 UK400) of the species (UK250 club rules and subject to acceptances by various rarities committies and a panal of mates to decide what consitutes a self-find for a few contentious ones). What about doing rankings for a self-found yearlist Surfbirds?? Know loads of others are up for it. Andy M., also working for the BTO beat me on straight BOU in the UK only, but I've entered my British Isles UK400 club total so I can appear someway above him in revenge for noticing that I'd added up my species totals wrong, thus preventing a BTO victory! They're correct now though, honest. |

Pretty much the end of 2005, not as good a year list as I'd have hoped, but I've had some top birds:- Sooty Tern, Green Heron, Upland Sandpiper, Pine Bunting, Rustic Bunting, Dusky Warbler, Spotted Sandpiper, Bee-eater & Laughing Gull were probably the main highlights. But lots of other goodies. Biggest dip was the Belted Kingfisher. Biggest regret: Not trying for any of the Trumpeter Finches, leaving it waaay too late for the Sociable Plover and not going for the Stilt Sandpiper. Bigger effort for lifers in 2006. Happy New Year all (esp. all The C's!! Well done boys - & you stuffed me Mark!! ;-) ). |
