Our pelagic trips are some of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences for the birder looking for a wide variety of pelagic seabirds.
Departing from Valparaiso (World Heritage City) or Quintero, we head offshore to meet the cold waters of the Humboldt Current, considered to be one of the world's finest pelagic birding locations. We will look for species which are endemic to this system such as Humboldt Penguin, Peruvian Diving-Petrel, Peruvian Booby, Guanay Cormorant, Red-legged Cormorant, Peruvian Pelican, Grey Gull and Inca Tern. We also are going to see birds like: Northern Royal Albatross, Black-browed Albatross, Salvin´s Albatross, Antarctic Giant Petrel, Hall's Giant Petrel, Southern Fulmar, Cape Petrel, Pink-footed Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, White-chinned Petrel and Wilson's Storm-Petrel among others. With a little bit of luck we might find Wandering Albatross, Antipodian Albatross, Waved Albatross, Chatham Albatross, Buller's Albatross, Juan Fernandez Petrel, Masafuera Petrel, Westland Petrel and Chilean Skua.
Pelagics from Lima, Peru
www.kolibriexpeditions.com
Kolibri Expeditions has initiated for the first time ever in Peru regular Pelagics from Lima. Initially we have tried to promote whale and dolphin watching for the local market, but the idea is to stimulate pelagic birdwatching as well.
Pelagics can be run any time of year. Different seasons give different birds. We found July particularly good with over 100 albatrosses seen of least five species. Other great birds we have seen include Sooty-, Buller´s- and Pink-footed Shearwaters, White-chinned- and Cape Petrel, Markham´s, Hornby´s, White-vented, Band-rumped, Wilson´s and Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrels, Swallow-tailed and Sabine´s Gulls, Waved, Gray-headed, Black-browed and Salvin´s Albatrosses, Peruvian Diving-Petrel, Chilean and South Polar Skuas. Inshore birds we see includes Humboldt Penguin, Inca Tern, Guanay and Red-legged Cormorants, Peruvian Diving-petrel, Blackish Oystercatcher and Peruvian Seaside Cinclodes.
