"This is one of two immature male Calliope Hummingbirds being seen in Northern Manhattan, New York City. They represent the first and second records of this species for the state of New York, and two of very few records in the northeast USA." Scott Haber

This bird was present the afternoon of November 13th at South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. If accepted by the state records committee, this will be the first Wisconsin record of Slaty-backed Gull. The bird seems most likely to be a 4th basic bird, as the mantle and bill appear fully adult, but the primary pattern has less white than is typical. There was also one wholly dark tail feather that would likely have been retained from 2nd year. Strange though the primary pattern may be note the paler inner webs and small white subterminal tongue-tips, and that P9 is not quite fully grown and P10 is only halfway there. Also notice the heavily streaked head, broad white trailing edge to the wing, the bill with little gonydeal angle and the head and body structure. Anyone wishing to comment on or discuss this bird in more detail is invited to email me directly. |
