This is a collection of James Hanlon's sketches of recent UK rarities from his field notebook.

They are all pencil drawings, though unfortunately there is heavy colour distortion and loss of quality from most, so apologies for that! This year’s highlights for me have been the 3 British ‘firsts’ (Black Lark, Audouin’s gull and ‘Taiga’ flycatcher) and the White-crowned Sparrow in Cork, supported by others such as Two-barred Crossbill, Lesser Scaup and Least Sandpiper. Unfortunately, I failed to see the Thick-billed Warbler on Fair Isle, having now missed this species twice on Shetland. Here’s hoping for third time lucky (perhaps next month after a spell of Easterlies?). Never satisfied with just birds, I have continued to chase butterflies, hawkmoths, mammals and amphibians this year – maintaining a bit of variety and ensuring I’ve stayed busy throughout the Summer!
