Little Gulls - Mikolaj Koss

Mikolaj Koss was born in Gdansk (Poland) where he spent most of his formative birding years. His passion for birds and drawing started when still a teenager. For many years ringer of Waterbird Reasearch Group KULING (www.kuling.org.pl). Favorite technique is watercolour, but had a short romance with watercolour crayons, now exploring pencil. For the time being living in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This sketchbook comprises images from different places along the Baltic coast.

Falsterbo, Sweden

No need to write about the place. One autumn day I dedcided to go there to see some raptor migration. There were some fine numbers of Rough-legged Buzzards and Sparrowhawks. After some time of scanning the sea, I came across this young Kittiwake.

Bornholm, Dueodde

Having been there for a few days and seen every corner of this beautiful island, I found Dueodde most attractive for birding. It has some nice sandy beaches – good spot for waders. I spent some time sketching Grey Plover as well as Black-throated Divers, which stayed really close to the shore.

Tofta, Gotland

Gotland beyond any doubt is a place that will stay in my memory for good. I have seen only a small part of this magnificent island. I visited it in the beginning of summer. In one of the orchards I found a stunning male Collared Flycatcher. Early evening pine forest near Tofta turned out to be a nesting ground of Nightjar.

Ptasi Raj, Poland

Part of the Vistula estuary. Late autumn sea brings species staying offshore closer to the coast. One of them is the Razorbill. It is still the time when Little Gull is on migration. Here and there one can also see Horned Grebes, either singles or in small flocks up to 5 birds.

Vestamager, Denmark

Some really decent wetlands near Copenhagen. Good place for watching wildfowl and waders. Some of the migrating raptors choose this spot as their feeding ground. A young Merlin stays perched long enough for me to capture its silhouette. On the way to the dam I enjoyed some views of a young Hen Harrier hunting over the meadows.
