Kaladhungi is a small village nestling at the foot of the Kumaon Himalaya. Since my last London exhibition two years ago, I have been fortunate to visit Camp Corbett, Kaladhungi, from where I was able to explore the vast and inspirational landscapes of the Himalayan foothills, trek to the Nepal boarder, watch and sketch endless new birds and attempt to paint some of the breathtaking scenery. Andrew Stock, President of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA), has been painting full time since leaving Sherborne School in 1978. Personally encouraged by the late Sir Peter Scott, Andrew's subject matter has primarily been wildlife, especially birds. As well as regular visits to the Highlands, Andrew has spent considerable time in the Lot region of France. Meanwhile his fascination with India grows and he has recently spent a month in Uttaranchal trekking to the Nepal Border. However, the Highlands and more especially the contrasting beauty and wilderness of the Outer Hebrides remain a constant pull. Andrew has lived in Dorset for the last nineteen years.
A visit to the Isle of May (Firth of Forth) in July this year was richly rewarding. The island was alive with sea birds; puffins were nesting everywhere, gulls and terns continually screaming overhead, skuas patrolling the coastline and razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes and shags still nesting on the cliffs.
Pabbay, in the Outer Hebrides, once again proved exhilarating, with the usual contrasts in weather. Beautiful, calm waters one day followed by all the north atlantic's rage the next. The sea was continually alive with gannets and gulls, the shoreline busy with flocks of scurrying waders, flotillas of Eider ducks and languorous seals, while over the island we watched eagles, peregrines and hen harriers.
