8th May – Niagara, Dufferin Islands Nature Reserve: 1 flew over
12th May – Point Pelee: 1 flew along the east beach area
16th to 13th May – Algonquin: numerous and widespread being found on many of the larger lakes in pairs with the maximum count of 5 on Lake of Two Rivers on 16th May.

Slavonian Grebe (Horned Grebe)
10th May – Point Pelee: a summer plumaged bird present just off the tip

Pied-billed Grebe
13th May – St.Clears: up to 10+ birds seen around the main reserve area and further along the main track past the bungalows.

Double-crested Cormorant
Common – Seen around Lake Erie in numbers. Large colony present where the QEW crosses the Lake Ontario inlet near Hamilton and 170+ at Point Pelee 12th May.

American Bittern
10th May – Point Pelee: 1 seen in flight from the Marsh Boardwalk
13th & 14th May – St.Clears: a bird was heard booming on the 13th and seen briefly on the 14th

Mute Swan
14th May – Mitchell’s Bay: a pair were on the private marsh by the ‘log cabin’ with 8+ in the bay at the end of the road.
19th & 20th May – Toronto beach Front: several birds present

Tundra Swan
14th May – Mitchell’s Bay: a single bird was present with the small Mute Swan herd in the bay.

Trumpeter Swan
14th May – Mitchell’s Bay: a single bird was present with the small Mute Swan herd in the bay.

Canada Goose
8th & 9th May - Niagara, Dufferin Islands Nature Reserve: 10+ on the main lake
Other birds were seen at numerous wetlands and along the Toronto Beach Front.

Wood Duck
8th May – Kopergaren Woods: a pair flew over the car park.
9th May – Point Pelee: a drake flew over the Delaurier trail.
14th May – Rondeau: pair flew over the Tulip Tree Trail.

Mallard
Fairly widespread with small numbers noted at various locations from Niagara, Dufferin Islands Nature Reserve to the lakes of Algonquin.

15th May – Algonquin, Beaver Pond: female pair with a drake Mallard
16th May – Algonquin, Spruce Bog: pair flew over
17th May – Algonquin, Highway 60: the female x Mallard pair were on a roadside pool
18th May – Algonquin: female on Rock Lake

15th to 18th May – Algonquin: most birds were seen along the Opeongo Road on a daily basis.

Common – seen nearly daily though numbers at Algonquin were reduced

12th May – St.Clears: 2 separate males were seen over the main marsh.

19th May – Carden Plain – superb male along McNamee road.

13th & 14th May – St.Clears: up to 20 birds seen around the marsh

American Coot
13th & 14th May – St.Clears: up to 12 birds seen around the marsh

10th May – Point Pelee: single bird at dusk along the Marsh Boardwalk
13th May – St.Clears: single bird flushed from close to the track

Least Sandpiper
14th May – Mitchell’s Bay: 12 in the bay at Lake St.Clears

Bonaparte’s Gull
Fairly common on the shores of Lake Erie but only a limited number seen at Pelee
8th May – Kopergaren Woods: a superb flight of 170+ over the car park
8th May – Wheatley Harbour: 100+ on the posts around the boats.
9th May – Hillmans Marsh: 750+ roosting on the main flooded field
9th May – Wheatley Harbour: 150+ on posts around the boats.

Ring-billed Gull
Common, most numerous and widespread gull. Many hundreds seen at Hamilton from the QEW, Niagara Falls and Hillmans Marsh.

American Herring Gull
7th May – Niagara Falls: 3
8th May – Niagara Falls: up o 20 different birds of various ages
8th & 9th May – Wheatley Harbour: 40+ birds seen out from the harbour mouth and around the boats.
Numerous birds were seen at various locations with adult birds present on several of the Algonquin lakes.

Great Black-backed Gull
8th & 9th May – Wheatley Harbour: up to 10 birds on the rocks beyond the harbour mouth
11th May – Rondeau: a 1st year flew along the beach along the South Point Trail
9th to 13th May – Point Pelee: several birds on the tip in the early morning

Caspian Tern
13th May – Point Pelee, the Tip: 6 birds on the sand bar

Common Tern
8th & 9th May – Wheatley Harbour: 5+perched on the harbour posts
9th to 12th May – Point Pelee: up to 100+ were seen around the point area

Forsters Tern
8th May – Wheatley Harbour: 1 bird in the harbour
9th to 12th May – Point Pelee: 25+ birds were present in the Common Tern flock at the tip
13th May – St.Clears: 1 over the marsh
14th May – Trembley Bay: 2 birds along the shoreline
14th May – Mitchell’s Bay: 4 birds in the bay at Lake St.Clear

Black Tern
8th May – Wheatley Harbour: single bird flew past
10th May – Wheatley Harbour: possibly the same bird again
13th May – St.Clears: 20+ birds present around the marsh with 10 still present the following evening

Mourning Dove
Common – seen mostly in the Point Pelee, Rondeau, St.Clears areas with only a few seen around Algonquin.

Feral Pigeon
Common around Toronto

Yellow-billed Cuckoo
12th & 13th May – 1 single bird flew through the tip woods on the 12th which was possibly the same bird seen perched on the beach the following day.

Great Horned Owl
13th May – St.Clears: an adult and well grown chick sat in isolated clump of trees on the right side of track 120 yards before the tower platform.
17th & 18th May – Algonquin, Booth Rock Trail: a bird was heard hooting in both the evening and early morning.

Eastern Screech Owl
12th May – Point Pelee, Woodland Trail: 1 sat near the path in a Red Cedar.

Whip-poor-will
10th May – Point Pelee, Tildens Trail: a bird sat very close the trail.

Chimney Swift
8th May – Kopergaren Woods: 1 flew low over the car park
10th May – Point Pelee: numerous birds were seen flying north along the point including several low through the trees
11th & 14th May – Rondeau: 3 flying along South Point on the 13th May with 1 on the 14th May and Tulip Tree Trails
12th May – Point Pelee: 4 flying through the Tip Woods

Ruby-throated Hummingbird
9th May – Point Pelee: male seen behind the Visitor Centre
10th May – 1 seen along the Tildens Trail in the morning with a male at the Blue Heron Picnic Site
11th May – Rondeau: male at the Visitor Centre feeders
12th May – Point Pelee: 1 along the Tildens Wood Trail, male in the Tip Woods and 1 along the
Woodland Trail
15th May – Algonquin: 1 by the Visitor centre and 2+ by the East Gate Motel
16th May – Algonquin: 1 at the feeders by the Opeongo Store
18th May – Algonquin: 1 at Opeongo Lodge
19th May – Carden Plain: 2 along the McNamee Road

Belted Kingfisher
9th May - Niagara, Dufferin Islands Nature Reserve: male present on the main pool
15th & 16th May – Algonquin: a single bird was on wires along Highway 60 on the 15th with a pair at Costello Lake along Opeongo road.

9th May – Point Pelee: 1 was on a telegraph post near the Pelee Wings store with another 2 flying along the same road.
10th May – Point Pelee: 1 flew south along the tip area

19th May – Carden Plain: 1 along McNamee Road

American Crow
Fairly widespread and fairly common though under recorded. A peak of 12 seen along the main highways between Leamington and Algonquin 15th May.

16th May – Algonquin: 1 over the visitor centre
17th May – Algonquin: 1 over Highway 60


Horned Lark
13th May – St.Clears: 2 along the road to St.Clears
14th May – St.Clears: 1 in roadside field

Purple Martin
8th May – Kopergaren Woods: 2 over nearby fields
10th May – Wheatley Harbour: 4 birds at nest ‘house’
11th May – Rondeau: 2 over Tulip Tree Trail
13th May – Point Pelee: 1 over the Sparrow Field and 8 by the west beach car park
14th May – Mitchell’s Bay: 5

Northern Rough-winged Swallow
7th May – Niagara Falls: 8+ above the falls
8th May – Niagara Falls: several seen above the falls
9th & 10th May – Point Pelee: several noted along the tip area.
11th May – Rondeau: several near the South Point Trail car park

Sand Martin (Bank Swallow)
12th & 13th May - Point Pelee: several hundred seen on beach along east beach near the tip

Tree Swallow

Fairly abundant, being seen most places visited. The first 3 birds being seen at the Dufferin’s Island Nature Reserve, Niagara. Maximum counts were of 50+ along the shore at Rondeau on 11th May and 70-100+ birds along the east beach areas at Point Pelee on 12th & 13th May. Smaller numbers were noted at Algonquin.

12th May – Point Pelee: 100+ along the east beach near the tip
13th May - Point Pelee: 200+ along the east beach, near the tip

Swallow (Barn Swallow)
Common and widespread with the highest counts coming from Point Pelee on the 12th & 13th May when 1000+ minimum were along the east beach area

8th May – Dufferin’s Island Nature Reserve, Niagara: 2 around the trails
9th May – Point Pelee: several were seen along the Tildens Wood Trail
10th May – Point Pelee: several along the Woodland Trail and Tildens Woods Trail
11th May – Rondeau: 5 along the Tulip Tree Trail
14th May – Rondeau: 1 along the Tulip Tree Trail
15th – 19th May: Algonquin: commonest small bird present
