30 years of birding on the peninsula have produced many top drawer rarities with the best including Forster's Tern, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Pacific Swift, Crested Lark, Spectacled Warbler, Short-toed Treecreeper, Stejneger's Stonechat, Blyth's Pipit, Trumpeter Finch and Lark Sparrow! I have also seen some very good patch birds including Blue-winged Teal (x2), Ferruginous Duck (x2), Great Shearwater, Little Bittern, Night Heron, Squacco Heron, White Stork, Black Kite, Gull-billed Tern, Lesser Grey Shrike and Desert Wheatear. Of course though, I have missed some major birds over the years including Semipalmated Sandpiper, Lanceolated Warbler, Paddyfield Warbler, Southern Grey Shrike and Yellow-breasted Bunting to name but a few! Many great birds seen on patch in last few years including the likes of Ross` Gull, Alpine Accentor, Kildeer, Olive-backed Pipit, Great Snipe and Black-headed Bunting to name a small few. Surely one of the most productive patches in the country, watched by a very dedicated band of observers.

Some reasonable birds include Squacco Heron, Marsh Sandpiper, Bonapartes Gull, Alpine Swift, Pied and Desert Wheater, Booted, Subalpine, Greenish, Arctic, Hume's Leaf, Dusky and Western Bonelli's Warblers. Sub-rarities include Bee-eater, Hoopoe, Goshawk, Richards and Tawny Pipit, RB Fly, Golden Oriole, Serin, Kentish Plover, Purple Heron and Pallas's Warbler. Still a few easy ones to add but if I've not seen them in 25 years they can't be that easy! Oops forgot Blue-winged Teal for 264.

Site on 300 (counting pending SOUTH POLAR SKUA (which also seen in Dorset), ELEGANT TERN and WESTERN SANDPIPER). Other highlights: LONG-BILLED MURRELET, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER. A c.6.5km stretch of coastline between Kilcoole, Newcastle & Blackditch East Coast Nature Reserve in an area known as 'The Murrough'. Habitats include shingle beach, low sand dunes, Phragmites reedbed, coastal grazing marsh, rough grazing, freshwater & brackish pools and channels, a small estuary, some salt marsh, fen, wet birch woodland, arable farmland & country laneways. Have been birding the area since 1995. 2013 patch ticks: Crane, Whinchat & LESSER WHITETHROAT (200th patch tick!). 2012 patch ticks: Bittern, Grey Phalarope, Long-eared Owl, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Crossbill (8+), 'Siberian' Chiffchaff, Rough-legged Buzzard & Tundra Bean Goose (x2).
