Aberstwyth, Wales

bitternThis Bittern spent nearly a fortnight in a tiny patch of reeds at the end of a drainage ditch. Despite its limited range, it could often be elusive as it would sit for hours just out of view. An almost incredible bird for Aberystwyth.
black redstartHungover and with little sleep, I was not sure that birding was the best idea as I ambled down the hill to the seafront. Of course, this stunning Black Redstart feeding on a sunlit roof proved to be an instant hangover-cure.
choughAlways more than 'just another crow'. This chough was a welcome sight, though very difficult to sketch as a fierce wind raged through my sketchbook.
purple sandpiperPurple Sandpipers. This bird is the reason I came to study at Aberystwyth. Though they can sometimes be hard to find, perseverance usually pays off, especially at high tide when a few birds can often be found clinging to the side of the sea wall.
shagsDisplaying Shags. Perched on a narrow clifftop path between Aber and Clarach is the best place to watch these stunning birds, even if you have to stop sketching to let hikers get past you!
starlingsThe daily spectacle of thousands of Starlings flying in to roost under the pier never fails to impress. Everybody notices the swarms of birds flying in as it starts to get dark, even if most of my non-birding mates believe them to be bats!!
