Shorebirds at Mølen

Magpie by Øivind Egeland

by Øivind Egeland

Øivind Egeland has been a passionate birdwatcher since he was very young. Until the age of 18, his local patch was the wetlands and shorelines of Jæren, close to Stavanger, in the southwest of Norway. Øivind later moved to Vestfold, where he spent a lot of time at the Bird Observatory at Mølen. Øivind used to draw a lot when he was younger, but had a break for about 15 years, before taking it up again a few years ago. Øivind has also started experimenting with watercolours, finding this increasingly rewarding. When he has the time, he prefers to work with field sketches.

More of Øivind's sketches can be found on his blog: fugleillustrasjoner.blogspot.com

All of the sketches were made at Mølen, and most of them outside. The Eider is one of my favourite birds to sketch - it has such a beautiful shape and striking plumage, and it's most often quite cooperative. Both the Great Black-backed Gull and the Oystercatcher landed briefly right in front of me, while I was waiting for a group of small waders to settle down closer to where I was sitting. The waders disappeared, but at least I went home with a few sketches. Drawing outside is a pretty unpredictable activity. The landscape with the Magpie shows the ocean view from the Mølen Peninsula.
