Sicily, December 2006

Lucio Maniscalco

Lucio Maniscalco isjust 18 years old and from Palermo, Sicily. Lucio started watercolour sketches seriously in August 2004 following a trip to Falsterbo in southern Sweden. He takes up the story...

"December 2006 has been a very good month for vagrants and scarce birds in Sicily, including such rarities as Desert Wheatear, Greater Sandplover and Long-billed Dowitcher.

On 8th December, during a national flamingo count, I found the female Desert Wheatear on a lagoon island. It was hunting insects in a strong, warm wind. I had just enough time to take just a short video.

On 23rd December I went to the exsterme south-east of Sicily to see two big rarities. I arrived at the Augusta's salines to watch the Long-billed Dowitcher, recorded a few days before by Andrea Corso. It was sleeping amongst a group of Common Redshanks. Then in the afternoon, I also found the Greater Sandplover, recorded by Carlo Cappuzzello,on a long beach feeding with a lot of Kentish Plovers.
