Summer and early autumn at the Vistula Mouth, Poland

Pomarine Skua

Mikolaj Koss

Mikolaj Koss was born in Gdansk (Poland) where he spent most of his formative birding years. His passion for birds and drawing started when still a teenager. He enjoys mostly depicting birds through watercolour, but recently started to experiment also with watercolour crayons.

"I spent some time this summer birding at the Vistula Mouth, which is for many reasons the finest place in the Pomeranian region if not the whole Poland. On the other hand there are moments, when you can become totally disappointed by the void you can meet there, but it can also change very rapidly into the most spectacular migration along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. For me the highlight of the season was an adult Laughing Gull. It stayed for a long time and many birders from all over the country came to enjoy that bird.

From the beginning of August I started to spend more time sketching Broad-billed Sandpipers, a wonderfully exotic and enigmatic species due to their scarceness and looks. In September, one of my dream birds appeared - a Sabine's Gull. The bird was extremely tame and allowed birders to approach very closely. During its stay, there was an easterly wind blowing nicely, which also resulted in fine numbers of Arctic Skuas, among which I managed to pick out a Pomarine Skua. All in all it was that kind of season that will remain in my memories for a long time."
