ARIZONA AND UTAH - SOME BIRD-FINDING TIPS FOR MAY

The following are tips and ideas I got from local birders.

Neotropic Cormorant

Very reliable, probably the most reliable Best at Patagonia Lake State Park ($5).

Least Bittern

Most reliable at Lake Patagonia State Park but difficult to find and you will be very lucky to see it. Tres Rios Water Treatment Plant at 91st Avenue and Baseline Road in Phoenix. They nest there at the hayfield site. Check in at the office for directions to the spot.

Black Vulture

Get to the Nogales area and look up at the right time; they'll be soaring overhead with the more numerous Turkey Vultures (and occasional Zone-tailed Hawk).

Often along the Santa Cruz drainage from Nogales north to Tucson, but the closer to Nogales the better. Especially, consider the Nogales wastewater treatment plant. Just keep looking up. Are all around - best near Nogales and over by Pena Blanca Lake FR 289. Very easy anywhere in the Nogales area and probably can be seen from Lake Patagonia state park too.

Patagonia Rest Stop, Pena Blanca Lake State Recreational Area. Patton's yard, Patagonia Nature Preserve---Just keep an eye to the sky).

Davis Rd between SR 80 (about 5 miles south of Tombstone) and US 191. Mostly open grassland & mesquite scrub, with some cultivated fields.

Gray Hawk

Along Sonoita Creek, though they are usually heard in the preserve, Gray Hawks are most easily seen by driving the highway between Patagonia and Nogales. They are often heard at The Rest Area, but more easily seen at the clubhouse pond in Kino Springs a few miles south. Other well documented locations include Arivaca Cienega just east of Arivaca, riparian areas of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge west of Arivaca, including the newly opened Brown Canyon, the trails emanating from the San Pedro House east of Sierra Vista, and the lower San Pedro around Dudleyville.

Harris's Hawk

Easiest is at Sweetwater Wetlands/Rogers Road WWTP at exit 254 of I-10 in Tucson. Go off exit 254, go west under i-10, turn north at the T, go up and road runs west again. Stop and park in Sweetwater on the left. HAHA are usually in the tall trees along the road. They are also common throughout Tucson in other specific locations. Be sure to check with the Audubon Nature Shop, 300 E. University Blvd, if you are having trouble finding them. You can also pick up here a free Southeastern Arizona Birding Trail Map.

Look for Harris' Hawks on telephone poles along US 60 east of Mesa, on Mill Avenue near the Phoenix Zoo, on the wires behind the stores at the Tanger outlet along I-10 near Casa Grande, and almost any other place around Phoenix.

Green Kingfisher

Very retiring; listen for sharp clicks, like striking two pebbles together, either singly or in rapid series. Patagonia Preserve is another traditional location. Difficult to find anywhere in SE Arizona and you will be very lucky to see one. San Pedro Riparian Area near Sierra Vista along the San Pedro River. A regular at San Pedro River Preserve. Best place seems to be "Kingfisher Pond" about 1/2 mile south of San Pedro House.

Buff-breasted Flycatcher

any other good spots apart from Sawmill Canyon. Upper Carr Canyon - much easier to reach by car than Sawmill.

Rufous-winged Sparrow

Reliable at Catalina State Park N of Tucson (not a bad detour if you're heading north-west on I-10 out of Tucson, and very easy if you're going up to the White mountains from Tucson through Oracle, etc.). See Rick Taylor's book for directions.

In Tubac, the scrubby area between the interstate and the shops. Not sure if they are there year-round.

Florida Wash is not reliable; try the wash on the road to the right just before Continental School on the way up to Madera Canyon. Drive around the housing development called Madera Reserve just below the Continental School. This species has been found fairly regularly in this area just by driving around and listening for their song, particularly in the vicinity of the large wash. The area behind the Catholic Church in Green Valley on La Canada Avenue is even better. Any desert area around Green Valley.

In Joe French Canyon on Rt 90 just north of Sierra Vista, you may see the Rufous-Winged Sparrow. owever, the fields between Florida Wash and Madera Canyon are very reliable for the Rufous-Winged, Cassin's and Botteri (when they are singing) Sparrows.

Rufous-winged sparrows nest between "the big wash" and the road in Catalina State Park.

Botteri's & Cassin's Sparrows

Only good if singing after monsoons - FR 460 (not sure of number) that goes south from Whitehouse Canyon Rd about mile 6+ out of Continental. You have to go through a gate. Goes south then east to join back to Whitehouse Canyon Road above Florida Wash (no gate). Cassin's sings all over the road to Elgin off of Rt 82 east of Sonoita. Go east from Sonoita and look for road to right to Elgin wine country. Birds are in the first mile - if singing.

For Cassin's and Botteri's Sparrows, try the grasslands along the road into Patagonia State Lake. Learn the songs.

Botteri's Sparrow should be possible either in the grasslands along the road to Garden Canyon on Ft

Huachuca or the grasslands at the corner of the highway and the road leading to Lake Patagonia.

Cassin's and Botteri's can also be found at the entrance to Garden Canyon on Fort Huachuca on you way up the canyon road to nail the reliable Buff-Breasted Flycatcher in Sawmill Canyon .

Owling spots around Portal and the Huachucas

Try lower Miller Canyon some evening within an hour after sunset for Western Screech, Whiskered Screech, and Elf Owls.

At Madera Canyon you can find Western Screech and Great Horned Owl along Florida wash (though WSO sometimes requires considerable patience) and Elf and Whiskered Screech-Owl at the Santa Rita lodge and higher in Madera Canyon. If Flammulated Owls are back, they can be found in upper Madera Canyon. A good location is to drive up the canyon to the point where the road forks (very near the top), take the left fork and park in the uppermost parking area. There is a trail going south from the lot which is a good location for owling: in the past Great Horned, Whiskered Screech, Elf, Flammulated, Northern Pygmy, Northern Saw-whet and Spotted Owl have been heard or seen from here.

Scheelite Canyon in the Huachucas (as described in Rick Taylor's guide) is the easiest site to find Spotted Owl (N. Pygmy-Owls are often here as well, or further up Garden Canyon).

The three picnic areas in Garden Canyon on the way up to Scheelite Canyon (Spotted Owl) are very reliable for Whiskered, Screech, and Elf owls.

VERDE VALLEY

Common Black-Hawk

At the 89A crossing of the Verde in Cottonwood. Birds are also nesting at the Page Springs Fish hatchery in Page Springs.

Page Springs Fish Hatchery before 7:30AM is best as they perch near the open ponds and roadside. Soaring later but that's is hit and miss for this sedentary hunter.

Crescent Moon Crossing and Red Rock State Park (both just south of Sedona) have been pretty good for these.

Zone-tailed Hawk

Try Tavasci Marsh or West Clear Creek Campground.

Regular here and all along Oak Creek (increasingly so in recent years), but never to be counted on, but your chances are as good here as anywhere.

ELSEWHERE

Black-bellied Whistling Duck

Phoenix area birders have ample opportunity to observe birds. Black-bellies are resident in the Valley and can be found at all seasons. The most reliable location has been the Gilbert Wildlife Sanctuary, located east of Cooper Road and between Guadalupe and Elliot Roads; watch here especially for family groups anytime from June through August. Often, Black-bellies occur on the ponds in and near the Phoenix Zoo in Papago Park; the Zoo doesn't have any Black-bellies in their collection, so any you find there should be free-flying. The Sun Lakes Reclamation Ponds on the north side of Riggs Road usually provide Black-bellies. In the north-west Valley, the pond located on the west side of El Mirage Road, about a mile South of Lower Buckeye Road, is a fairly reliable spot. Don't confine your observations to these few locations though, because Black-bellies have probably occurred on just about every park lake, sewage lagoon, and golf course pond in the Valley at one time or another.

Prairie Falcon

They nest in Sabino Canyon, on NE outskirts of Tucson Willcox area. San Raphael Valley maybe

Blue Grouse

Many birders in Arizona have never seen this bird. Try the White Mountains at Green Peak. Flagstaff-Trail up Humphrey's Peak

Three-toed Woodpecker

Flagstaff - same as above

Red-naped Sapsucker

Should see in SE AZ in proper habitat. Fairly findable in any pine-oak woodland in SE Arizona (Madera Canyon, Ramsey Canyon, etc)

Pinyon Jay

North of the Rim around Grand Canyon National Park.

Bendire's Thrasher

Bendire's can be found in Sulphur Springs valley on side roads around Whitewater Draw. In Sulphur Springs Valley go one mile north from the intersection of Davis Road and Central Highway, turn right and check the brush along the road. A pair of Bendire's Thrasher nested on the right side of the road just across from the first house.

In Rodeo, try the Lumber Company at the junction of the Portal Rd. and Hwy. 80. Lee Rd. in Sulphur Springs Valley. Stuart Healy said this is a good area for them.

Le Conte's Thrasher

Pretty late for singing thrashers - only known place for Le Conte's is Buckeye west of Phoenix. Not much chance for this one. You might try Baseline Road and Salome Road in Southwest Phoenix at Buckeye.

For the Le Conte's Thrasher, a very reliable spot is near the intersection of Buckeye and Salome Rds west of Phoenix. You can find the information in the guide to birding Maricopa County.

American Pipit

Look carefully around the edges of wetland areas, such as Sweetwater Wetlands, the Sierra Vista Wasterwater Wetlands, and Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area.

Again, near the Roger Road WWTP in Tucson (see directions in Rick Taylor's book). Go west past the entrance to the WWTP, to where the road ends. Continue walking west (50 yards) to the edge of the Santa Cruz River. Walk north along the river to where the treated water outflow is, and beyond (0.5-0.75 miles).

Patagonia Lake State Park - up creek which empties into lake

American Pipit- will all be on the high mountains above tree line by the time you get here. No habitat in Arizona.

Black-chinned Sparrow - best spots

In French Joe canyon, you will almost certainly run across some Black-chins there. A usually reliable spot is in Florida Canyon (park before the Florida Work Center) trail goes up into narrow canyon, Look along hill side here near the small gate. Also, note that a narrow trail goes left (north) before you climb a small hill near the beginning of the trail. This little cow path goes into a narrow short wash. Just up the road from Portal in an area called Silver Spring. Florida Canyon. Try Mount Lemmon Road at the lower elevations where there are high walled canyons.

UTAH

A note on McIvor's book - the directions to birding sites are great (though some of his selected sites aren't so great), but there are many errors in the information on what birds are where.

Ferruginous Hawk

Look for these in any open area you pass through. One place where they are fairly reliable is just west of Cedar City. From I-15, take State Route (SR) 56 (exit 59) west for about ten miles (you will pass a place where the road bends to the south-west) until a large set of power lines crosses the road.

Prairie Falcon

Again, you should look for these through any areas of open country in N. Arizona and S. Utah. You should see one along your route eventually.

Blue Grouse

Grouse are very difficult to find at the time of year of your visit, because they are nesting. Blue Grouse are most likely to be seen early in the morning or late in the evening in aspen woodlands, especially at the brushy edges of clearings and meadows. Along your route, I would try along the road to Kolob Reservoir west of Zion, around Brian Head (if you go there), and around Bryce Canyon. However, you should look anytime you're in the mountains.

Three-toed Woodpecker

You'll need lots of luck for this one - these are very rare in the southern Utah mountains (they are much more common up north). Look in evergreen forests with lots of dead trees at high elevations (~9,500'+). Recent sightings (within the last 10 years) have been made at Navajo Lake above Cedar City, at Brian Head, and in the Tushar Mountains. (east of Beaver, UT).

Lewis's Woodpecker

This is another one you won't have much chance for - they are mostly in northern and north-eastern Utah. The most recent sighting near your route is from 1938. The closest place where they've been seen in recent years is at Capital Reef NP (Fruta) and the nearby town of Torrey.

Gray Vireo

These are fairly common in pinyon-juniper woodlands in south-western Utah. There are some good places on the west side of I-15 at exits 30, 31, 33, and especially 36 on the way from Zion to Cedar City.

Another excellent place is along the road from St. George to Lytle Ranch (see McIvor's book). Take SR 8 west from St. George, and take the left fork about 15 miles west of town. After about 8 miles, you'l begin passing through a gap in the mountains with excellent pinyon-juniper woods on both sides. There are Gray Vireos (and Black-chinned Sparrows) all through this area for about 4 miles.

Pinyon Jay

These can be anywhere in the pinyon-juniper woodlands. Check all of the places mentioned above for Gray Vireo, and also along the road to Kolob Reservoir, and the road out the east side of Zion to Mt. Carmel jct.

American Pipit

At this time of year, these will be mostly at or above timberline in the highest mountains. You can check at Brian Head, or in the Tushar Mountains (see below).

Black-rosy Finch

These have been seen a few times at Brian Head, but it's not a very reliable location for this species (contrary to what McIvor says). A much better place in southern Utah would be in the Tushar Mountains, a little farther north, just east of the town of Beaver. To get there, take I-15 north from Cedar City for about 50 miles to Beaver, and then go east on SR 153, following the signs to Elk Meadows ski resort. This road takes you up Beaver Canyon into the Tushar Mountains. This is a good place to look for any of your mountain birds. The road ends at Elk Meadows, and there are trails that will take you up Mt. Holly and Delano Peak. Look along the edges of the snowfields for the rosy-finches. The road will be open to Elk Meadows, but how far you can go beyond that will depend upon the amount of snow. It can be tricky to predict for this time of year. There will be lots of it, but whether or not you can negotiate your way through and between patches depends upon how much melting has occurred.

Pine Grosbeak

Try in the evergreen forests at Brian Head, Elk Meadows, and anywhere else in the higher mountains.

Zion NP

There are several places worth checking in Zion for Mexican Spotted Owl. Try the Cable Mountain trail, which goes up behind Weeping Rock. The owls are actually in Echo Canyon, which the trail goes through. My friend and I have usually found them about 2 miles up the trail, near where there's a trail junction for "Observation Point" and "Cable Mountain" (this is the second junction you come to, the first goes to Hidden Canyon, where owls have also been seen). At this junction, look in the slot canyon down to your right (be careful!). Some nights, the owls can be heard calling from this canyon. Other traditional places include Refrigerator Canyon and various slot canyons along the east entrance road.

Zion is a good place for Northern Pygmy-Owl. They can be seen just about anywhere in the canyon. Great Horned Owls and Western Screech-Owls are also common, especially in the cottonwoods along the river bottoms. Up at Kolob Reservoir, or in other higher elevations, Long-eared Owls (in pinyon-juniper woods) and Flammulated Owls (in mixed pine/aspen/oak forests) can be found. You might find these at Bryce, also.

Many thanks to all of the birders from Arizona, Utah and further afield who so willingly gave information and their time.
