We spent two weeks in Goa with John and Chris Hamilton. The following is our list - obviously John and Chris saw one or two different species. At the end of the systematic list we have detailed a few species seen by others during our stay.

Great Egret recorded daily, seen at most wetland sites.

Intermediate Egret recorded daily, seen at most wetland sites.

Little Egret recorded daily, seen at most wetland sites.

Western Reef Heron seen on the river at Panjim, 3 on Nov 26 & 6 on Nov 29, also 2 on Morjim beach on Nov 30 and 1 on Zuari river on 2 Dec.

Indian Pond Heron abundant, recorded daily, seen at most wetland sites - probably more than two dozen behind the Beira Mar any time of day.

Cattle Egret very common, seen daily in large numbers.

Striated Heron one on Zuari river on 2 Dec and one north of Baga fields 3 Dec.

Black-crowned Night Heron up to half a dozen birds seen each evening from the Beira Mar going to roost.

Cinnamon Bittern just one sighting at dusk on 3 Dec behind the Beira Mar.

Asian Openbill Stork up to 30 at Carambolim Lake 26 Nov.

Black Stork a single bird seen over Baga fields from Lila's café on 30 Nov.

Woolly-necked Stork two sightings - one from Beira Mar 30 Nov and 2 over Zuari river on 2 Dec.

Black-headed Ibis only one of the trip in flight over Zuari river on 2 Dec.

Glossy Ibis a dozen Carambolim Lake 26 Nov and one over river Mapusa on 1 Dec.

Eurasian Spoonbill just one seen in flight Baga on 1 Dec.

Lesser Whistling Duck common at Carambolim Lake 26 Nov and 40+ behind Beira Mar 2 Dec.

Tufted Duck an odd record - a female at Carambolim Lake 26 Nov.

Osprey two birds seen behind Beira Mar most days, also 2 Zuari river on 2 Dec and 1 Fort Aguada 4 Dec.

Oriental Honey Buzzard just one sighting over Baga Hill 24 Nov.

Black Kite very common.

Brahminy Kite very common always half a dozen birds behind Beira Mar.

White-bellied Sea Eagle 1 over hotel terrace 25 Nov, a pair at nest Arpora forest 30 Nov & 6 Dec, 3 on Zuari river trip 2 Dec, 1 Baga Hill 3 Dec, 2 Fort Aguada 5 Dec.

Crested Serpent Eagle 1 Lake Pilerne 5 Dec and 1 over Arpora forest 6 Dec.

Marsh Harrier 1/2 birds always present Baga fields.

Pallid Harrier two sightings, both females, 1 over Carambolim Lake 26 Nov and 1 Zuari river 2 Dec.

Crested Goshawk two sightings, 1 Zuari river 2 Dec and 1 over Baga fields 6 Dec.

Shikra seen almost daily - male Baga Hill 24/25 Nov & 5 Dec, 1 Baga 26 Nov, 1 Backwoods 27 Nov, 1 Arpora forest 30 Nov, 2 Zuari river 2 Dec, 1 Beira Mar 3 Dec, 2 Baga fields 6 Dec.

Besra an accipiter with kill seen from hotel balcony at dawn 3 Dec was believed to be this species.

Eurasian Sparrowhawk an accipiter over Baga fields 24 Nov thought to be this species - members of a tour group who also saw the bird from the Beira Mar agreed - it was seen again on 6 Dec perched in hotel garden.

Northern Goshawk just one sighting over Saligao 25 Nov.

Common Buzzard just one sighting a dark bird over Baga fields 6 Dec.

Black Eagle 2 seen from raptor watchpoint at Backwoods 28 Nov.

Lesser Spotted Eagle seen regularly - 6 over Beira Mar 24 Nov, on 30 Nov 1 Beira Mar and 1 Arpora forest, 1 Zuari river 2 Dec, 1 Baga fields 3 & 5 Dec.

Greater Spotted Eagle seen regularly - 1 over Beira Mar 24 Nov, 1 over Saligao 25 Nov, 1 over Carambolim Lake 26 Nov, 1 Zuari river 2 Dec,

Tawny Eagle just one sighting over Beira Mar 1 Dec.

Changeable Hawk-Eagle 1 seen perched Baga Hill 3 Dec, a dark bird Lake Pilerne 5 Dec.

Kestrel seen on a couple of occasions over Baga fields.

Amur Falcon a female perched on wires seen from hotel balcony 3 Dec.

Peregrine two sightings - 1 Carambolim Lake 26 Nov and 2 ( ad. & juv. ) Fort Aguada 5 Dec.

Indian Peafowl a family party of 2 adults & 3 young seen Fort Aguada 5 Dec.

Slaty-breasted Rail a rail seen at dusk from hotel terrace thought to be this species.

White-breasted Waterhen common in wetland areas - always present behind Beira Mar.

Ruddy-breasted Crake a bird seen briefly but well at Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Watercock with patience found behind Beira Mar - seen well 25/26 & 30 Nov.

Purple Swamphen 500+ Carambolim Lake 26 Nov.

Common Moorhen plentiful Carambolim Lake 26 Nov and 2/3 Lake Pilerne 5 Dec.

Eurasian Coot not common - 1 Baga fields 24/26 Nov and 2 Carambolim Lake 26 Nov, 1 Lake Pilerne 5 Dec.

Pheasant-tailed Jacana up to 10 Carambolim Lake 26 Nov.

Bronze-winged Jacana a dozen Carambolim Lake 26 Nov, also 1 Lake Pilerne 5 Dec

Greater Painted-snipe always present behind Beira Mar - fem seen well 24 Nov & 4 Dec

Small Pratincole only seen Santa Cruz 1 Dec when more than 30 birds present.

Yellow-wattled Lapwing 6 Dona Paula - only ones of the trip.

Red-wattled Lapwing common in wetland areas - always present behind Beira Mar.

Pacific Golden Plover a flock of 32 at Santa Cruz 1 Dec were the only ones of the trip.

Little Ringed Plover common Baga fields and other wetland sites.

Kentish Plover 3 Morjim beach 30 Nov.

Lesser Sand Plover a mixed flock on Morjim beach held 100+ lessers 30 Nov.

Greater Sand Plover a few in the mixed flock on Morjim beach 30 Nov.

Pintail Snipe a probable at Santa Cruz 1 Dec followed by 2 birds Baga fields 6 Dec.

Snipe always present Baga fields, also Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Redshank always a few birds behind Beira Mar.

Greenshank always a few birds behind Beira Mar.

Green Sandpiper always 2/3 behind Beira Mar, also 2 Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Wood Sandpiper present at most wetland sites with 50+ Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Common Sandpiper seen regularly Baga fields, 7 from ferry to Morjim 30 Nov, also 1/2 Santa Cruz 1 Dec, 3 Zuari river 2 Dec,

Little Stint only seen Santa Cruz 1 Dec when more than 10 birds present.

Temminck's Stint 1 Baga fields 24 Nov and 30+ Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Dunlin 2/3 Panjim saltpans 1 Dec only ones of trip.

Ruff only sighting was a single bird at Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Herring Gull numerous Morjim beach 30 Nov.

Yellow-legged Gull numerous Morjim beach 30 Nov.

Heuglin's Gull numerous Morjim beach 30 Nov.

Brown-headed Gull numerous Morjim beach 30 Nov, also plentiful Zuari river 2 Dec, a few seen from Baga Hill 3 Dec.

Gull-billed Tern 1/2 on river at Panjim 26 & 29 Nov, a few Morjim beach 30 Nov, c12 Zuari river trip 2 Dec, 1 from Fort Aguada 5 Dec.

Lesser Crested Tern up to a dozen Morjim beach 30 Nov, 25+ Zuari river trip 2 Dec.

Rock Dove common around habitation.

Eurasian Collared Dove usually a couple on telegraph wires behind Beira Mar, also seen Dona Paula.

Spotted Dove usually present behind hotel, also seen Baga Hill , Arpora forest and Backwoods.

Emerald Dove only one of the trip at Bondla 4 Dec.

Pompadour Green Pigeon a flock of 8 at Backwoods on 27 Nov.

Mountain Imperial Pigeon one at Backwoods 27 Nov, identified by Pramod as it flew off - not at all satisfactory! A large plain pigeon sp. seen Baga Hill 5 Dec had pale bill but no discernible chequered neck pattern - initially considered Nilgiri Wood-pigeon but probably this species.

Rose-ringed Parakeet up to half a dozen seen regularly around Baga.

Plum-headed Parakeet a flock of 6 seen from Baga Hill 3 Dec.

Vernal Hanging Parrot only sighting was of 3 birds at Backwoods 27 Nov.

Common Hawk Cuckoo just one seen in flight Arpora forest 30 Nov.

Eurasian Cuckoo a female/juv. type seen well Baga Hill 3 Dec.

Asian Koel at least one pair heard ( & occasionally seen ) daily in hotel grounds, also 3 Baga Hill 24 Nov, 2 Baga fields & 2 Carambolim Woods 26 Nov, 3/4 Arpora forest 30 Nov, 1 Baga Hill 3 Dec, 1 at Aguada 5 Dec, Arpora forest 6 Dec.

Greater Coucal seen regularly - 1 from hotel terrace 23 Nov, 1 roadside en route to Baga Hill 25 Nov, 1 Santa Cruz 1 Dec, 1 from balcony 4 Dec, 1 Fort Aguada 5 Dec.

Brown Fish-Owl 1 roosting at Maem Lake stake-out 1 Dec.

Brown Wood-Owl 2 roosting at Saligao stake-out 25 Nov.

Jungle Owlet just one sighting at Backwoods on the edge of camp 27 Nov.

Spotted Owlet pair always seen at dusk from Beira Mar terrace.

Brown Hawk-Owl pair seen at Backwoods 27 Nov and heard calling each morning ( 28 & 29 Nov ) before dawn.

Sri Lanka Frogmouth just one heard at Backwoods during the night, 29 Nov.

Jungle ( Grey ) Nightjar one seen perched on nightjar walk at Backwoods 28 Nov.

Jerdon's Nightjar a bird seen well in flight on nightjar walk at Backwoods 28 Nov.

Indian Nightjar 2 seen at a daytime roost at Maem Lake on 1 Dec.

Asian Palm Swift seen regularly in small numbers over Beira Mar, Baga fields and Baga and Arpora forest.

Alpine Swift just one sighting of a couple of birds over Baga Hill 25 Nov.

House ( Little ) Swift the commonest swift - seen every day in good numbers.

Crested Treeswift more difficult than anticipated - a distant bird from Tambdi Surla 28 Nov followed by close-up views of 4/5 birds at Bondla 4 Dec.

Malabar Trogon 1 found by Jean ( and only seen by her!!!! ) at Backwoods 27 Nov a pair at Tambdi Surla 28 Nov, 2 pairs Backwoods 29 Nov.

Kingfisher very common at most wetland sites - up to half a dozen per day.

Stork-billed Kingfisher could usually be found Baga fields, also seen Zuari river trip.

White-throated Kingfisher the most common species of kingfisher - up to ten seen daily.

Black-capped Kingfisher up to 2/3 birds always present Baga fields from Beira Mar.

Collared Kingfisher three seen Zuari river trip 2 Dec.

Pied Kingfisher on 26 Nov two sightings - 1 Carambolim Lake & 1 at the marsh adjacent to Carambolim Woods; on 1 Dec 2 Santa Cruz and 1 Panjim Saltpans.

Green Bee-eater very common seen throughout.

Blue-tailed Bee-eater usually present behind Beira Mar, 3 on 24 Nov, 6 on 25/26 Nov & 2 Dec; also 6 Carambolim Lake 26 Nov, seen Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Chestnut-headed Bee-eater at Backwoods 1 on 27 & 28 Nov, also 4/5 at Bondla 4 Dec.

Indian Roller 2 Baga fields 24 Nov & 6 Dec, 2 nr Calangute 25 Nov, 1 & 4 Dec also 1 Santa Cruz 1 Dec.

Hoopoe just one sighting nr Arpora forest 30 Nov.

Malabar Grey Hornbill one at Backwoods 27 Nov and 5 at Bondla 4 Dec.

Malabar Pied Hornbill only sighting was a flyover at Backwoods 28 Nov.

Brown-headed Barbet 2/3 seen Backwoods 28 Nov, 1 at Lake Pilerne 5 Dec.

Crimson-fronted Barbet only seen Backwoods - 3 on 27 Nov, 2 on 28 Nov & heard on 29 Nov.

Coppersmith Barbet heard almost daily at various sites - 2 seen Baga Hill 24 Nov & 1 on 25 Nov, 1 Carambolim Woods 26 Nov, 2 Backwoods 27 & 28 Nov, 1 Baga Hill 5 Dec.

Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpecker only one of the trip seen at Backwoods 28 Nov.

Rufous Woodpecker at Backwoods 1 on 28 Nov then 2 seen on 29 Nov, 1 at Bondla 4 Dec.

Common Flameback one seen distantly at Backwoods 27 Nov.

Short-toed Lark flock of 2 dozen over Beira Mar 26 Nov, 350 + Baga fields 6 Dec.

Malabar Lark Baga fields - 2 on 24 Nov, 1 on 5 Dec & 6 on 6 Dec, also 3 Backwoods 28 Nov, 3/4 Dona Paula 1 Dec.

Oriental Skylark 2 Baga paddies 26 Nov, 6 Baga fields 6 Dec.

Bank Swallow a small brownish hirundine, no pale rump but possible breast band seen with Red-rumped Swallows over Baga fields on 6 Dec believed to be this species despite its rarity in Goa.

Dusky Crag Martin 6 at Backwoods 28 Nov, 4/5 Bondla 4 Dec.

Barn Swallow not common - 2/3 near Carambolim Woods 26 Nov, 2 Panjim saltpans 1 Dec.

Wire-tailed Swallow 1 over Carambolim marsh 26 Nov, 4 Backwoods 28 Nov, a dozen from ferry to Morjim.

Red-rumped Swallow seen in large numbers every day inc. 5000+ Baga fields 24 Nov, 2000+ Baga fields 6 Dec.

Forest Wagtail 1 at Backwoods 27 Nov, 2 in the camp at Backwoods 29 Nov.

White-browed Wagtail 1/2 seen behind Beira Mar almost daily.

Yellow Wagtail 2 Baga fields 23 Nov, 2/3 Baga paddies 26 Nov, 15+ Santa Cruz 1 Dec, 1/2 Baga fields 2 Dec, 3 Baga fields 6 Dec.

Grey Wagtail 1 Backwoods 27 Nov, 1 Bondla 4 Dec.

Paddyfield Pipit usually present Baga fields also seen Backwoods 28 Nov, Dona Paula 1 Dec.

Richard's Pipit 3/4 Baga fields 24 & 26 Nov, also 6 Dec.

Tawny Pipit 1 near football field 3 Dec and 2 there on 5 Dec.

Black-headed Cuckoo-shrike a pair at Arpora forest 6 Dec.

Small Minivet 1 at Backwoods 28 Nov, a flock of a dozen Arpora forest 30 Nov.

Scarlet Minivet only seen at Backwoods - 3 on 27 Nov and 6 on 29 Nov.

Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike only one of the trip at Arpora forest 30 Nov.

Black-crested Bulbul at Backwoods 2 on 27 Nov, 5 on 28 Nov, 4 on 29 Nov, also 2 at Bondla 4 Dec.

Red-whiskered Bulbul common seen almost daily.

Red-vented Bulbul our only sighting was a pair in Carambolim woods 26 Nov.

White-browed Bulbul 2 Arpora forest 30 Nov & 6 Dec, also 1 Baga Hill 3 Dec,

Yellow-browed Bulbul at Backwoods 2/4 on 27 Nov, 6 on 28 Nov, 4 on 29 Nov, also 2 at Bondla 4 Dec.

Golden-fronted Leafbird 1 Backwoods 28 Nov, 1 Baga Hill 5 Dec.

Blue-winged Leafbird only one of the trip at Bondla 4 Dec.

Common Iora seen daily in small numbers.

Blue-capped Rock Thrush 1 at Backwoods 28 Nov was our only sighting.

Malabar Whistling Thrush two sightings at Saligao 25 Nov and at Backwoods 27 Nov.

Orange-headed Thrush at Backwoods 2 on 27 & 28 Nov, 3 on 29 Nov, also 1 at "pitta" site at Aguada 2 Dec, 1 at Bondla 4 Dec.

Eurasian Blackbird only sighting 1 at "pitta" site at Aguada 2 Dec.

Zitting Cisticola 3 Baga fields 6 Dec.

Ashy Prinia 1 Carambolim Lake 26 Nov, 1 behind Beira Mar 30 Nov, 4 & 6 Dec.

Plain Prinia on 24 Nov 1 Baga fields, on 26 Nov 2 Baga, 3 Carambolim Lake, 2 nr Carambolim woods, on 30 Nov 2 Arpora forest.

Paddyfield Warbler just one seen nr Baga paddies 26 Nov.

Blyth's Reed Warbler common seen ( or heard ) at most sites.

Clamorous Reed Warbler 1 Baga fields 24 Nov, 1 Arpora forest 6 Dec.

Booted Warbler only at Bondla 2 on 4 Dec.

Common Tailor Bird present in the gardens of the Beira Mar - 6 seen on 6 Dec.

Greenish Warbler quite common seen almost daily at most sites.

Green Warbler 1 nr Baga paddies 26 Nov - probably more but we didn't take the time and trouble to examine all the Greenish type warblers.

Western Crowned Warbler seen at Backwoods 2/3 on 27 & 28 Nov, also Bondla 2 on 4 Dec.

Lesser Whitethroat 2 at Arpora forest 30 Nov only ones of the trip.

Asian Brown Flycatcher 1 Baga Hill 24 Nov, a juv. Baga 26 Nov, 1 Backwoods 29 Nov.

Red-breasted Flycatcher 2 on 27 Nov at Backwoods one of which was albicilla, also 1 in camp at backwoods on 29 Nov.

Verditer Flycatcher only at Backwoods 1 on 28 Nov and 2/3 on 29 Nov.

White-bellied Blue Flycatcher only at Backwoods 2 on 28 Nov and 1 on 29 Nov.

House Crow very common and widespread.

Large-billed ( Jungle ) Crow 3 Baga Hill 25 Nov, small nos each day 27-29 Nov at Backwoods also seen at Aguada 2 Dec and at Bondla 4 Dec.

Jungle Myna common, small flocks seen daily, always up to twenty behind Beira Mar.

Common Myna only seen twice - on 23 Nov half a dozen Baga Fields and 6 Dec 3 from hotel balcony.

Chestnut-tailed Starling flock of 25+ over Baga fields 23 Nov, at Backwoods 6 on 28 Nov and 3 on 29 Nov, at Bondla 6 on 4 Dec.

Rosy Starling only sighting was of 3 over Beira Mar on 25 Nov.

House Sparrow not common only seen at Dabolim airport on arrival 23 Nov, Baga 26 & 30 Nov, also 5 Dec, Panjim 1 Dec.

Chestnut-shouldered Petronia 2 at Backwoods 27 & 28 Nov.

Baya Weaver 500+ Carambolim Lake and 50+ Carambolim marsh on 26 Nov.

White-rumped Munia common, at least 15 present behind Beira Mar every day.
