Notes on sites

Cocha Cashu Biological Station (c.300 m): we spent several weeks here, focusing on trails near the lake itself, and several times walking out to (and camping at) 'Playa Bonita, a stream some 8 km away along a good trail to the uplands. We spent three morning at the Ccolpa stream, also at the end of a different long trail which leaves the main grid, and four mornings across the Manu river in terra firme forest where there is a trail that you need a boat to reach, plus two mornings around nearby Cocha Totora (reached by trail). We also spent one day at the 'pantanal', a seasonally flooded grassy area reachable by trail. As most of the time was spent following a group of pale-winged trumpeters for a research project, canopy flocks received relatively little attention. It is impossible to visit Cocha Cashu without research permission, although Cocha Salvador is just a few kilometres downriver and can be visited by tourists. With research permission, charges for staying at Cashu are around US$11 per day, depending whether the cook is there.

Boca Manu (c.300 m): we never did any birding around here, just saw a few things around the town.

Pantiacolla (c.400 m): we divided our time between floodplain/bamboo trails (e.g. Tinamou and Capybara trails), the large loop (Monk Saki trail) that runs through terra firme, and the ridge trail (Mirador trail) where we spent a night camping at the first Mirador (c.900 m). We paid US$15 per night on special rate and camping; not sure how much full board is.

San Pedro (c.1,500 m): not really a settlement on the Manu Road, more the name of a bridge beside which stands the Cock-of-the-Rock lodge. We stayed on a fine sheltered camping platform at this lodge, which is much cheaper than the rooms. A short (c.400 m) loop trail descends to the river from the garden of the lodge; this passes through some good forest. Below this lodge (along the road) forest becomes somewhat patchy, punctuated by areas of secondary growth and clearings, some of which contain interesting patches of bamboo. Above the lodge, there is good forest interrupted by landslides all the way, past the Cloud Forest lodge (c.1,650 m), and up towards Pillahuarta. There are two roadside Cock-of-the-Rock leks, one 'owned by the lower lodge and the other 'owned' by the upper lodge. The lower lek (c.150 m uphill from Cock-of-the-Rock lodge) seemed superior in terms of viewing conditions, and is the one referred to in the following accounts. There is an interesting Inca trail starting between the two lodges and heading up to the 'raptor watchpoint' (really just a major bend in the road c.500 m above Cloud Forest lodge) and passing through some good habitat. Easier to do it backwards from the watchpoint down.

Pillahuarta (c.2,900 m): a couple of huts by the upper Manu Road. Good birding above and below these huts, where it is possible to camp on the floor if you speak to the old madman across the road.

Cuzco (c.2,800 m): we visited the famous ruins overlooking the town on two occasions, catching a taxi up there.

Macchu Picchu (c.2,600 m): we took the morning train from Cuzco and the bus up to the ruins and then walked down through the woods along a steep trail through stunted forest, catching the train back a few hours later.

Ollantaytambo/Abra Malaga (2,000-4,000 m): bus from Cuzco, then jumped on a truck at dawn going up the Abra Malaga road (they leave every day). This dropped us off at the pass (taking two hours to get there) and we walked over to the (highly trashed) Polylepis groves, then down halfway to Ollantaytambo again before finally getting a lift to town.

Highlights

In terms of birds, pride of place goes to the tame group of Pale-winged Trumpeters that we studied at CC for two months. Other highlights were Solitary Eagle, Scarlet-shouldered Parakeet, Pheasant Cuckoo, Rufous-vented Ground-cuckoo, White-throated Jacamar, Collared Puffbird, Curl-crested Araçari, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Marcapata Spinetail, White-browed Tit-spinetail, Peruvian Recurvebill, Bamboo Antshrike, Ihering's Antwren, Yellow-rumped Antwren (Threatened), Manu Antbird, White-lined Antbird, Goeldi's Antbird, Red-and-white Antpitta, Rufous-fronted Antthrush (Threatened), Black-faced Cotinga, White-cheeked Tody-tyrant, Ash-breasted Tit-tyrant (Threatened), Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Dusky-tailed Flatbill, Golden-collared Tanager, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch, Black-billed Seed-Finch, Yellow-shouldered Grosbeak, Selva Cacique (Threatened) and Pale-eyed Blackbird. In terms of mammals, the most impressive were Hoffmann's Two-toed Sloth, Giant Otter and ten species of monkeys (best of which was Emperor Tamarin).

Species Lists

A total of c.32 mammal species and 670 bird species was encountered. None of the sightings below were made in Manu National Park proper; almost all are within the buffer zone or research zone. Sightings from around Cuzco, Macchu Picchu, Ollantaytambo and Abra Malaga are outside the park entirely. The list is heavily weighted towards the tropical zone as only a small proportion of time was spent at high altitudes. Nomenclature and systematics follows Emmons and Feer (1997) for mammals and the existing Manu bird list (on CC website; with amendations) for birds.
