The following list is a compilation of the observations I have made during a period starting in early 2003 and ending in June 2006, when I was posted for professional reasons (not bird-related) in Hanoi.

I have chosen not to present my observations in a text-format but in a list as it seemed to me this would be more useful to visiting birders – and allowed me to be fully exhaustive. The 554 bird species I have seen during my stay in Vietnam are all listed, in an order following roughly the order followed by Robson (A Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia).

Next to the birdname appear a short comment and initials indicating every place where I have seen this species in Vietnam. The sites corresponding to these initials are given at the end of the list, together with an idea of the time I have spent at each site. The fact that I was posted in Hanoi and did most of my birdwatching during weekends explains why most of my trips were made to parks in East Tonkin, or at least in places quickly accessible from Hanoi. The Mekong Delta and the Central Highlands were, for this reason, very rarely visited.

Note that I did not use sound-recordings to attract birds, which helps explain why I did not see some species (such as some partridge or pitta species for instance).

Birders interested in more detailed information about some of my observations may contact me at sdoppagne@hotmail.com.
