Timing
We spent three and a half week of birding in the Malaysian Peninsular. August and the beginning of September are quite good for birding in this part of the country. It is the time just before the rainy season. There is a huge amount of food, especially for the fruit-eating birds like bulbuls, pigeons and also hornbills. But there are still some flowering trees for flowerpeckers, sunbirds and spiderhunters. Songbirds like babblers and also cuckoos are harder to find. They are calling or singing just occasionally. Besides that, you’ll have simply a larger number of birds because it’s just after the breeding season. We also had a few migrants like the magnificent but very early Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a great number of waders. We chose to spend our last days in areas where you can find some early migrants. That gives some extra excitement for the fanatic birder. But... March and April are probably better. But it’s not really convenient for students like us.
Flight
We had a direct flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Our departure date was the 14th of August (12:00) and we arrived on the 15th of August (06:00) in Kuala Lumpur. We flew with Malaysian Airlines, one of the best airlines in the world. The crew was helpful and most friendly. You can choose your own films, play games and get as much drinks if you want.
Weather
Only a few days we had some rain. On the last days of our trip it was raining. Beginning of the rainy season I guess? Fraser’s hill and the Cameron Highlands were chilly.22-28 C°. But at lower levels you will find out that it’s really moist and warm.
Vaccinations and parasites
We had a DTP and Hepatitis-A Vaccine. Hepatitis-B is not needed but you’ll never know. There are only a few. Malaria records in the last ten years or so on the peninsular. When you’ll choose to go to Borneo you’ll need some preventive pills. Watch out for some mosquitoes though. I spend my last days of the trip in my hotel-bed and also 2 weeks at home in bed because of Dengue. It’s a virus that’s spread by mosquitoes. I was really sick, high fever, awful headaches, swollen glands, red, almost pinkish face. I won’t scare you but I think you’ll have to be aware of the ‘dengue mosquito’, they are simply recognisable by his black/whitestriped body, and we saw them in Taman Negara. You require a lot of DEET, also for the Leeches. On some trails at Fraser’s hill but especially in Taman Negara leeches are abundant. There are leech-socks on the market. Look for it on the internet. Or just buy enough DEET. We also had some Ticks as well.
Food and drinks
For a western guy like me, the malaysian kitchen is very good. The most basic food like mee-hoen,nasi goreng or mee are very cheap and delicious. Often served with shrimps. Ask for roti if you want a good breakfast. There are some thai and chinese influences aswell, or you can choose a western meal, so you are not stuck on the local food. We can’t complain about Tiger beer by the way. Bring enough water and salt or electrolyte with you while walking in Taman Negara.
Taping and sounds
We didn’t learn every sound by head but a few starbirds like pitta’s, railbabbler, hornbills and the groundbirds are easy to learn. Some birds are reacting very well to tape, like most pitta’s and scimitar babblers. But Rail Babbler, Rusty-Naped Pitta and a few babbler species didn’t react to tape, (we used quite a large Ipod box to attract the birds).
Preparation and field Guides
We used: Birds of South-east Asia by Craig Robson, We ordered also The Field Guide to the birds of West Malaysia and Singapore. The last book was less helpful. On the site www.naturesniche.com you can order the following books by Draco Publishing: Birds of Taman Negara and Birds of Fraser’s Hill. You can also buy this books at the office of Mr.Durai at Fraser’s Hill.
Locations and accommodation
The Gap(G)
This is a very good site for watching lowland-birds together with sub-montane birds. You can only bird from a paved road. The Gap Resthouse is re-opened, but don’t expect a luxury stay, and the breakfast was terrible by the way. We found out that the terrace of the resthouse was very good for birdwatching early in the morning and late afternoon. It is really worth staying a couple of days.
Fraser’s Hill (FH)
This place is fantastic. A very birdy area and a good temperature, sometimes foggy in the early morning. This is the place to see all malaysian endemics. Although Mountain Peacock-Pheasant is very rare and we of course did not see it. Stay at Puncak Inn and Mr. Durai (durefh@hotmail.com) will find you and might give you some helpful information about the birds. Birdwatchers get 10% discount in the Puncak Inn Hotel. One of the best places in the peninsular for montane species.
Taman Negara (TN)
It is a real paradise. I was very excited about this place. Taman Negara is one of the oldest (rain)forests in the world. In the most remote places of the park you’ll have the change to encounter a Tiger, Leopard, Rhino or an Elephant. But Tapir, Leopard Cat and Malayan Civet are more easier to find. Try the Kumbang hide for a few nights and you will see a couple of these. There are enough trails. River Trail and Jenat Muda Trail are probably the best trails and worth visitting several times. If you have enough time try the Yong and Blau area and/or the Kumbang area. These places are more quiet and remote and will add some other birds on the list.
There are many tourists from all over the world and there is plenty of accommodation. We chose the Mutiara Resort. A good place for birds, but very expensive for local standards. 280 Ringit per night, but we arranged a 80 ringit discount. On the east bank of Kuala Tahan, you will find accomodation of no more than 10 Ringit per night. But you will possibly miss the chance to bird in the early hours because the water-taxi’s start operating from app. 7:30 On this side of the bank there’s also a internet-cafe.
Cameron Highlands (CH)
We stayed at the town of Tanah Rata. Most of the people here are Indian or Chinese. Nice place. Gunung Brinchang is a very good place for montane species such as Golden-Throated Barbet, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-winged Fulvetta,Snowy-browed Flycatcher,Chestnut-tailed Minla and Rufous-vented Niltava. The Parit and Robinson Falls are good places for both whistling thrushes. Most of these aforementioned species are hard to find or absent at Fraser’s Hill.
Kuala Selangor (KS)
You will find scrub and mangrove forests, lagoons, small wetlands and mudflats in a small reserve full of birds. We stayed in the village but there is also the possibility to hire one of the chalets inside the reserve.
Sekinchan and surrounding area’s (SK)
20 km north of Kuala Selangor and worth visiting if you want to see waders, bitterns or White-breasted Woodswallows. We stayed a couple of hours at Pantai Rasa Sayang. This is at high-tide a very good spot for waders and terns. The Sempadan (small-scale) rice field was also good for adding more species to our bird list.
Shah Alam (SA)
Taman Pertanian is nearby the town of Shah Alam. This rainforest site isn’t very interresting, as it is used extensively for recreational uses. There are some nice tracks north of the dams, but nothing here isn’t to be found at the other rain forests sites. But it was close to the hotel where Frank tried to recover from his illness. We slept at the Quality hotel on the 22nd floor and it was really good.
Kuala Lumpur/Mining pools (KL)
The area is now extensively built upon. Only the biggest lake survived the onslaught. It is only a 10 minute drive from central KL. But It is a good spot for migrants. We heard about the Paya Indah Wetlands (old tin mining pools) near the International Airport of Kuala Lumpur. Unfortunately we didn’t had enough time to visit this place but it should be very good for some other birds like Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Cotton Pygmy Goose and Lesser Whistling Duck. These birds are hard to find elsewhere in the peninsular.
Species
326 species were recorded on this trip. 275 were new for us, because we never went to East Asia before. The next species were possibly recorded but are not 100% sure. Red-billed Malkoha(G), Yellow-vented Pigeon(G) Other birders recorded the following species during our stay: Large Green Pigeon (TN) Marbled Wren Babbler(G).

Species List
1.Crested Partridge Rollulus rouloul
TN- 8 birds were seen beside the trail to the Canopy Walkway (5 males,3 females on 25/8) Also a big group (15+) were seen in the early morning crossing the Jenat Muda Trail. These birds are shy and often difficult to see, they really dislike human company.
2.Malayan Partridge Arborophila campbelli
FH- On 18/8 we saw 8 individuals of this endemic species besides the Bischop’s trail and on the 20th we saw also 7 individuals really close to the path at the very beginning of the Bischop’s trail. In the dry season the leafs rustle while the birds forage, so these birds are easier to find. They are active in early morning and late afternoon. These birds were really one of the highlights of the trip. Magnificent views and really close! Not shy, just approach carefully.
3.Red Junglefowl Gallus gallus
KS- We heard several daily at the park. Some birds were heard close to path but seemed impossible to see. Also heard near the lagoon. The Eagle trail is possibly the best trail for this species. But the trail around the lagoon should also be a good place to see these birds.
3. Crested Fireback Lophura ignita
TN- Seen almost daily around the HQ area at Kuala Tahan. Often in the late afternoon and in the morning. Also seen besides the Sungei Tahan on 24th of August. The Campsite near Lubok Simpon is also a really good site for this bird. Taman Negara is said to be the best place in the world to see this bird.
4. Malayan Peacock Pheasant Polyplectron malacense
TN- Heard on different dates around the HQ area of Kuala Tahan and at the Swamp Loop. On 25-8 we saw close to the path an adult male passing by, at the trail to the canopy walkway. On the 26th we heard one calling near the Blau Hide. On 30th of August one beautiful male was present at the River Trail. A very shy bird.
5. Great Argus Argusianus argus
TN- On different mornings we heard the Great Argus calling.(Swamp Loop and the trail to the Canopy walkway) Also one male was calling near the Kumbang hide on 29/8.We found one male at the top of the Jenat Muda trail on 23/8.This bird showed very well for a long time while walking on the trail. Stunning!
6. Speckled Piculet Picumimnis innominatus
FH- One male was present in a group of Mountain Fulvetta’s at the old road on 16/8, 1 km before the gate. CH- another male was seen at the road to Gunung Brinchang just 2,5 km before the summit. This bird is often seen in birdwaves, and easily overlooked.
7. Rufous Piculet Sasia Abnormis
TN- One bird was seen by F.D. in a bird wave in the canopy from the Tabing Hide, another was seen on the Swamp Loop by P.B. a few days later while taping a Banded Pitta.
9.Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker Picoides moluccensis
KS- Several were seen on 2 days at the mangrove boardwalk.
10.White-bellied Woodpecker Dryocopus javensis
TN- Seen only at the trail from the Blau hide to the Yong Hide in the top of a giant tree on the 26th of August. A very loud drummer.
11.Banded Woodpecker Picus miniaceus
TN- Two birds at the HQ area, one female gave good views at the trail from Blau hide to Kuala Tahan on the 26th of August.
12 Lesser Yellownape Picus chlorolophus
FH- Common. Most birds were seen at the road to the Jeriau Waterfalls. Sometimes little party’s were foraging together with Crimson-winged Woodpecker.
13 Crimson-winged Woodpecker Picus puniceus
G- A few were seen along the old road to FH.
FH- Seen daily. Especially around the old smokehouse, and the road to Jeriau Waterfalls. TN- The most widespread Picus woodpecker.
14 Greater Yellownape Picus flavinucha
FH- Only one sighting, at the road to the Jeriau waterfalls. Close to a few Lesser Yellownapes which seemed to be more common here.
15 Chequer-throated Woodpecker Picus mentalis
TN- We saw only one bird near our chalet at Mutiara resort (Kuala Tahan) on the 27th August.
16 Laced Woodpecker Picus vittatus
KS- Common in the park area. Most birds were present around the central lagoon, were the birds gave close views.
17 Great Slaty Woodpecker Mulleripicus pulverulentus
TN- Two birds were seen at the trail to Bukit Teresek, and two birds were seen perched far away from a lookout over the Sungei Tembeling east-bank on 27th of August. Awesome birds.
18 Common Flameback Dinopium javanense
KS- A few were seen and heard daily at the park around the lagoon. These birds are less common in the mangroves than the following species.
19 Greater Flameback Chrysocolaptes lucidus
KS- Easy to see. A pair was seen daily from the mangrove boardwalk. These birds gave good views. The mangroves are the main habitat of this species.
20 Maroon Woodpecker Blythipicus rubiginosus
TN- One male was seen at the trail from the Mutiara resort (Kuala Tahan) to the Canopy walkway. It gave short views but the bright yellow bill and the reddish neck and mantle were obvious.
21 Rufous Woodpecker Celeus Brachyurus
G- Two were seen at the old road 1,5 km above the Gap.
TN- Seen on different days. On 24th of august 3 individuals were present near our chalet at Mutiara Resort.
22 Buff-rumped Woodpecker Meiglyptes tristis
FH- A pair was seen halfway up the new road on 18/8.
23 Buff-necked Woodpecker Meiglyptes tukki
TN- One was seen halfway up the trail from the Blau hide to Kuala Tahan at 26/8, Three birds were seen at the Swamp Loop on the 30th of August. Also 2 birds were seen on our last day in TN besides the River Trail.
24 Grey-and-buff Woodpecker Hemicircus concretus
TN- On 27/8 one male was seen from the trail from the campsite to Lubok Simpon. One bird was seen close from the Kumbang hide by P.B.
A beautiful and strange looking woodpecker.
25 Orange-backed Woodpecker Reinwardtipicus validus
TN- My favourite woodpecker. A pair was discovered by P.B. at the trail to Lubok Simpon on the 27th of August.
26 Fire-tufted Barbet Psilopogon pyrrolophus
FH- The most abundant and beautiful barbet at Fraser’s Hill. Most of them were seen at the highest elevations. CH- two birds were heard on our way to Gunung Brinchang, but also seen at the Parit Falls and one at Tanah Rata.
27 Lineated Barbet Megalaima lineata
KS- Different birds gave good views at Bukit Melawati and also around the chalets of Taman Alam Kuala Selangor. A pretty Barbet.
28 Gold-whiskered Barbet Megalaima chrysopogon
G- Heard very often, but only seen twice very briefly besides the Old road to FH. TN- One bird foraged in a fruiting tree near our chalet at Mutiara resort(Kuala Tahan HQ) A few heard throughout the park.
29 Red-throated Barbet Megalaima mystacophanus
FH- One was seen halfway up at the New Road on 18/8.
TN- One bird was seen at the fruiting trees at Kuala Tahan. Another one was present besides the River Trail on 30/8. Also seen in the Blau and Yong Hide area.
30 Golden-throated Barbet Megalaima franklinii
CH- Three different birds were seen at the road to Gunung Brinchang 1-2 km from the summit, (round 1800-1900 m) At least 5 different birds were heard. This bird occurs at high elevations. Gunung Brinchang is one of the few places in Malaysia were you can find this bird.
31 Black-browed Barbet Megalaima oorti
G- On 16/8 two birds were seen and more were heard at the Fraser’s hill road at the first 3 km or so. Abundantly heard at the road to Raub and the KKB road. Also one seen from the terrace at the Gap resthouse.
FH- A few were heard and one congregation of app.10 birds in a large fig tree on the new road on 18/8.
32 Blue-eared Barbet Megalaima australis
G- Our first Barbet. Seen brilliantly from the Gap Resthouse. Also seen and heard on different locations at the Gap. FH- Heard only halfway down the new road on the 18th of August.
33 Yellow-crowned Barbet Megalaima henricii
FH- One heard and seen briefly at the New Road 4km down.
34 Coppersmith Barbet Megalaima haemacephala
TN- One at the Mutiara Resort in a fruiting tree on 27/8.
KS- One bird in Kuala Selangor town and one bird nearby the information centre on the 2nd of September.
35 Brown Barbet Calorhampus fuliginosus
G- Different small flocks on different days around the Gap Resthouse, 3 at the beginning of the New Road to Frasers Hill on 18/8. TN- Seen on different days, most birds around the Campsite were they bred.
36 White-crowned Hornbill Berenicornis comatus
FH- No less than 4 birds were seen from the New Road (2,8-3 km from FH,14:00 o’clock). One male was taking a sunbath on one of the leafless branches. We observed different social behaviours like allopreening. Gave truly magnificent views through the telescope. Brilliant discovery by P.B. and one of the unexpected highlights of the trip!!
37 Bushy-crested Hornbill Anorrhinus galeritus
FH- A flock of six birds were seen from the dump on 17/8 around 18:00 o’clock. After watching them for a quarter of an hour or so they flew away. Somewhat high elevation for this species(1450m), according what its written in our field guide (low elevations up to 1200 m).
38 Wreathed Hornbill Rhyticeros undulatus
FH- A flock of 9 birds were present at the new road (3,5-4 km down from Fraser’s Hill on 19/8) around a couple of big fruiting trees. There were at least 3 males. TN- Three birds were seen from a river-outlook near Kuala Trenggan lodge.
39 Black Hornbill Anthhracoceros malayanus
TN-Only one was heard near the Yong hide on 26/8.
40 Oriental Pied Hornbill Anthhracoceros albirostris
TN- One was seen from the chalet’s at Kuala Tahan by F.D.
It is said to be the most common hornbill in the Kuala Tahan area. But we do not agree. Strangely enough we saw only one in nine full days of birding.
41 Rhinoceros Hornbill Buceros rhinoceros
FH- Five birds were seen on the New Road.(4 km down from FH around midday 19/8).
TN- Heard and/or seen daily. Often a few birds around the fruiting trees near our resort, three heard at Yong Hide(26/8) A group of 13 birds were seen from the boattrip at the Sungei Tahan. Really beautiful birds which are worth watching for hours.
42 Great Hornbill Buceros bicornis
FH- Six birds were seen from the New Road.(4 km down from FH around midday 19/8) They gave gorgeous scope views, just like the other hornbills. Wow!
43 Helmeted Hornbill Rhinoplax vigil
G- Heard at the old fraser’s hill road (3,5-4 km) from the Gap.
TN- Heard on two days around Kumbang Hide, but were unfortunately out of sight. One heard on the trail to Lubok Simpon on 22/8 and heard from the trail near the Kumbang Hide.
44 Red-naped Trogon Harpactes kasumba
TN- Heard only around the Blau and Yong Hide on 26/8.
45 Diard’s Trogon Harpactes diardii
TN- Heard only from the Jenat muda trail on 23/8.
46 Orange-breasted Trogon Harpactes oreskios
G- One splendid male was seen from the Raub Road, just 1,5 km before the Gap Resthouse. The only trogon that gave us really good views.
47 Red-Headed Trogon Harpactes erythrocephalus
FH- 2 were seen at the road to the Jeriau Waterfalls. 2 birds were calling from the pine tree trail on the19th of August.
48 Red-bearded Bee-eater Nyctyornis amictus
G- Heard really close along the old road to FH, 3,5 km above the Gap.
FH-Heard on two days at the New road, (2-4 km from FH), they did not react to our tape.
TN- One seen at the Swamp Loop on 22/8, one seen along the Sungei Tahan on 24/8, one seen on two days around the Mutiara chalets at Kuala Tahan. What a magnificent birds!
49 Blue-throated Bee-eater Merops viridis
FH- One bird flying over the Old Smokehouse.
TN- Nearly every evening groups of up to thirty birds above our chalet.
50 Blue-tailed Bee-eater Merops philippinus
KS- 4 individuals around the lagoon on 2/9.
SK- Different solitairy perched birds around the ricefields on 3/9.
51 Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis
FH- One juv. seen on our last day around the Jeriau Waterfalls.
TN- One bird was recorded on the Sungei Tahan.
KS- One seen at a small stream in the mangroves.
52 Blue-banded Kingfisher Alcedo euryzona
TN- A male was seen from the swimming place at Lubok Simpon.
A bird on 29/8 seen from the Trenggan Lodges was probably also this species.
53 Black-backed Kingfisher Ceyx erithacus
TN- One flyby was seen by F.D. at the trail to Lubok Simpon on 30/8.
54 Collared Kingfisher Halcyon chloris
TN- Near the boat-jetty (start) of the Sungei Tembeling there was one perched bird present.
KS- Seen a lot in the mangroves and around the Lagoon.
SK- 2 birds were seen at the mangroves of Pantai Rasa Sayang, and one individual sat on the beach. A very noisy kingfisher.
55 Stork-billed Kingfisher Halcyon capensis
TN- Seen on different days but only around the Sungei Tembeling.
KS- One bird was perched on a branch in the lagoon.
56 White-throated Kingfisher Halcyon smyrnensis
TN- Seen at the Sungei Tembeling almost every day. One was present on different dates at the Tahan Hide. One seen at night sleeping in an oil-palm tree at Kuala Tahan oil-plantations, during our night safari.
KS- Also a common kingfisher.
SK- Plenty of birds around the ricefields around Sekinchan.
57 Oriental Cuckoo Cuculus saturatus
FH- one was seen by F.D. from the road, a hundred meter before the rubbish dump. This was the only sighting of this species.
58 Koel Eudinamis scolopacea
KS- One seen in late afternoon 1/9 in the village, and the following morning one was calling at the foot of Bukit Melawati.
59 Plaintive Cuckoo Cacomantis merulinus
KL- An adult and a juvenile were present at the shore of the big mining pool on 6/9.
60 Malayan Bronze-Cuckoo Chrysococcyx minutillus
KS- Seen on three days at the reserve (1 or 2 daily).
61 Drongo Cuckoo Surniculus lugubris
TN-Only one bird was seen by F.D in a tree behind the mini-market of Mutiara resort at Kuala Tahan. Heard also a few times elsewhere in the park.
62 Black-bellied Malkoha Phaenicophaeus diardii
TN- Two or three birds were seen from Lubok Simpon, together with a
Chestnut-breasted Malkoha.

We observed this bird alongside a few Greenshanks, Marsh Sandpipers and some plovers on the beach. Overall a big, lump and whitish Tringa wader, with no marks or streaks on the tail (very white). White lores, contrasting stocky bill (grey on the base and dark tip). After an hour or so the bird flew away with Greenshanks and the toes didn’t extend beyond its tail. Absolutely fantastic! A very rare wader worldwide with no more than 1000 birds left in East Siberia.

FH- One bird was calling around 8:00 in the morning from the Bischop’s trail. This bird was too shy to tape in. It just didn’t react.

TN- 1 heard from the Tahan Hide on the first day in Taman Negara. 1 male was seen at the beginning of the Swamp Loop on 22/8. Another bird was heard from the Kumbang hide and 3 birds from the River Trail. One male seen very close and beautifuly from the River Trail on our last afternoon in Taman Negara. This is really the most beautiful bird I have ever seen!

TN- We saw one individual calling close to the Swamp Loop Trail. The bird was seen very early in the morning. We had magnificent views of this bird at the west-side of the ‘loop’. What a magnificent bird. This ruby of the rainforest is near-threatened with global extinction.

TN- The trail from the Mutiara resort to the Canopy Walkway was very productive for this species. On two mornings we saw a bird on the trail itself and was not that shy as other pitta’s. The first morning he flew off the trail and we could even see the great white patch on the wing. We also heard a bird calling from the Swamp Loop on 22/8. It is only since a few years that you can see this bird in the summer. Also a very pretty pitta.

These birds are very shy and often hard to find. And it is endemic to the Malaysian Peninsular. We searched for it at the CH as well. Parit Falls is said to be a good place too. But there were no whistlingthrushes there.

These birds are getting scarcer and scarcer because of the poaching in the last few years. It is a popular cagebird, especially in Indonesia.
