Introduction
This trip was aimed at giving us all a good African Safari experience, taking in some of the specific spectacular places Tanzania has to offer. This was basically 10 days on the North Tanzania safari circuit and then 4 days resting and relaxing in Zanzibar. As I was the only birdwatcher on the trip this was not a specific birdwatching trip, but I was obviously keen to see as many birds as possible whilst on the tour and the rest of the group didn’t mind the odd (well ok quite frequent) stop to look at a little brown job! In fact everyone got quite interested in the birds very quickly as there are some stunning species to be seen. Our guide was also very interested in the birdlife in the area and was very good at spotting and identifying even some of the more lesser known species.
As my parents hadn’t been to Africa before we pitched this trip at quite a plush level in terms of accommodation and this worked very well. All our lodges were fabulous and provided their own special features. See later section for lodge details.
We used a specialist company Go 2 Tanzania to arrange the trip and I must say their service was first class. Chris MacDougall was very helpful in terms of suggesting options for the trip and was also very amenable to building the trip around specific things we wanted to do. Whilst on the safari everything went extremely smoothly with all bookings and flights as per arrangements and we always had our transport awaiting us at every leg. I would thoroughly recommend their services.
Our guide and driver for the safari part of trip was Abnery Zoya and he was excellent company for the whole trip. He provided informative talks about all the wildlife we saw and his spotting skills were amazing. A very jolly and fun character, he helped make the trip very special for everyone. Zoya also ensured we made the most of our safari time and would arrange picnic lunches when he felt we could benefit from full days in the parks. The vehicle was very reliable and comfortable – a large Landcruiser with pop-up roof.
For one day on the trip I arranged to meet a specialist bird guide to show me some of the specialities of Arusha National Park and the area known as the Lark Plains – specifically I wanted to see the critically endangered Beesley’s Lark. My guide for this trip was James Wolstencroft and again he was excellent. He worked very hard throughout the day and showed me many of the species I wanted to see, including the Lark. Also worth noting is that the Lizzy and my parents also joined us on this trip and they thoroughly enjoyed the day as we visited some areas off the beaten tourist track, some of which were very scenic.
Itinerary
24th November – Depart Heathrow on KLM flight to Kilimanjaro airport via Amsterdam. Arrive early evening in Arusha. Overnight at Mount Meru Game Lodge (MMGL).
25th November – Full day in Arusha National Park. Overnight MMGL.
26th November – Full day guided tour with James Wolstencroft in Arusha National Park and out to the Lark Plains. Overnight MMGL.
27th November – Morning drive to Lake Manyara to arrive in time for afternoon game drive in national park. Overnight at Kirurumu Tented Camp (KTC).
28th November – Morning game drive in national park. Afternoon walk along escarpment. 3 hour night drive in evening. Overnight KTC.
29th November – Drive to Gibbs Farm on edge of Ngorongoro Conservation area via a look around Karatu. Overnight at Gibbs Farm.
30th November – Full day around the farm with a morning walk to the Elephant Caves. Overnight at Gibbs Farm.
1st December – Drive to Ngorongoro Crater. Afternoon game drive in the crater. Overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.
2nd December – Morning drive in crater. Visit Oldupai Gorge in afternoon. Overnight at Ndutu Lodge.
3rd December – Pre- breakfast game drive around Ndutu area. Rest of day in Serengeti National Park. Overnight Serengeti Sopa Lodge (SSL).
4th December – Full day in Serengeti. Overnight SSL.
5th December – Morning balloon trip over the Serengeti. Afternoon game drive. Overnight SSL.
6th December – Early morning game drive in Serengeti. Transfer by plane from airstrip to Zanzibar via Arusha. Overnight at Fumba Beach Lodge (FBL).
7th December – Safari Blue day trip. Overnight at FBL.
8th Decmeber – Afternoon/eve visit to Stonetown by taxi. Overnight FBL.
9th December – Morning at lodge. Afternight flight to Dar Es Salaam. Eve at the Slipway in Dar. Late flight to London Heathrow via Amsterdam (arrives on 10th).
Lodges
Mount Meru Game Lodge (www.intimate-places.com)
Very comfortable Lodge. Good food. Friendly staff. Nice gardens with views over a pond and some rescued animals. Downside is that there’s not much to do if you don’t go into the national park or town.
Kirurumu Tented Camp (www.kirurumu.com)
Great location on the rift valley escarpment with views over Lake Manyara. Tents fabulous with luxury interior and sides which can fold down to give a feeling of sleeping in the bush! Food here excellent and staff very friendly. Range of excursions available from the camp. We did an escarpment walk with a local Masai man who told us of the various uses of the plants of the area. Good birding in local bush area.
Gibbs Farm (www.gibbsfarm.net)
Very plush colonial type accommodation. Relaxing place to stay in between national parks with some interesting walks nearby. You must be accompanied by a ranger to go to Elephant caves, but it’s a good walk. Even the vegetable area is an interesting walk around. Food good, but drinks and other services found to be very expensive here. Good birding in gardens/Vegetable garden and walk to Elephant Caves.
Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge (www.sopalodges.com)
Stunning location with great views down into the crater from the rooms, dining area and pool. Didn’t actually spend much time in the lodge itself, but food here was probably most disappointing on the trip. Birding potential looked good if had more time here.
Ndutu Lodge (www.ndutu.com)
This was our favourite lodge of the trip. Completely in the bush the rooms were excellent as was the food (even with the resident Genets staring down at you!). Staff very friendly and the highlight is sitting around the campfire in the eve under the starlit African skies listening to the animals! Lovebirds abound here and we had hyena, giraffe and zebra walk past our rooms! Numbers of animals here are very seasonal though so don’t expect to see this area teaming with game outside migration, but don’t let this put anyone off staying here as it is a fantastic place!
Serengeti Sopa Lodge (www.sopalodges.com)
Another lovely lodge with friendly staff and great food. Location fantastic with great views over the Serengeti. Quite a variety of game can be seen from the rooms!
Fumba Beach Lodge (www.fumbabeachlodge.com)
Lovely location and great rooms right on the sea. Food excellent and they will arrange for meals on the beach if required. Downside is that it’s a bit difficult to reach as the roads are pretty much washed out, making it quite arduous to get anywhere whilst staying there. Also drinks very expensive and some of the facilities advertised are only available at extra cost (ie the Boabab tree hot tub). Good birding around the grounds though, with Crab Plovers viewable from the pool!
The Slipway, Dar Es Salaam
I have included this as we enjoyed a pleasant few hours here whilst we waited for our flight home. A courtesy room was provided for us to freshen up before the long flight, and there were quite a few nice shops and restaurants in the vicinity. Far nicer than waiting at the airport for hours! It’s also worth noting that the souvenir prices here were easily the cheapest of the trip and most things were available. However, it can take about an hour to drive here so it,s only worth it if you have hours to kill (we had about 6 hours between flights and so this was ideal)

Daily Highlights
25th November
Full day in Arusha National Park nestled between the impressive peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. Saw an amazing gathering of over 50 giraffes – a favourite animal of ours (but this trip had many favourites!) Very nice park with some lovely views – the crater in the park is second only to Ngorongoro and is quite impressive, with Black-and-white Colobus monkeys in the surrounding trees. Picnicked at a lovely viewpoint overlooking the Momella Lakes, which were sadly devoid of flamingos. Also went on a short walk with a ranger to the waterfall (this was the only national park on our tour we could walk in) which was good – great to walk past herds of Buffalo! We were really lucky enough to have an excellent view of a Serval Cat, closely followed by brief views of a second. Bird highlights: Very close Martial Eagle, white-fronted bee-eaters
26th November
Birding day out with James Wolstecroft. Went into Arusha National Park again, but went up the road to Mount Meru which we didn’t cover the previous day, birding along the way. Stunning views, especially with Mount Kilimanjaro cloud free for once! As we had a ranger with us too we were able to get out and walk at various sections. Another fantastic picnic spot at a waterfall on the mountain, and saw the remarkable fig tree arch. In the afternoon we circumnavigated the mountain and finished up at the ‘Lark Plains’. This was a very interesting and recommended drive as we passed through many villages and saw some lovely sights off the usual tourist route. The larks weren’t particularly easy, but James managed to find 2 for us and eventually good views were had. Bird highlights: Beezley’s Lark, Foxy Lark, Athi Short-toed Lark, Short-tailed Lark, Crowned Eagle, Bar-throated Apalis, Black-headed Apalis, Golden-winged Sunbird (Low down near gate), Kenrick’s Starling, Abyssinian Crimson-wing, Hartlaub’s Turaco
27th November
Drove to Lake Manyara, via short stop in Arusha, to meet the head of the ground team, Nelson. Also stopped at the cultural centre, which is basically a huge African arts and craft centre. Arrived in Lake Manyara in time for an afternoon game drive – but it was picnic time first, which was interrupted by a baboon who decided to join us and jumped onto our table.....we all moved rather sharpish and the ape made off with several cakes! We later enjoyed our first good look at Elephants and Hippos – we spent hours at the hippo pools as the hippos and concentration of birdlife was amazing. Bird highlights: Verreaux’s Eagle, African Skimmers, Southern Ground Hornbill
28th November
Full morning game drive in Lake Manyara NP seeing lots of birds and animals, but sadly no sign of the famous tree climbing lions. In the afternoon a local Masai man took us on a walk along the escarpment, pointing out plants of interest to local people. Magnificent views over the rift valley. An evening game drive still failed to produce the predators and was quite expensive, but we did see some interesting nocturnal species such as a Large-spotted Genet, both Bushbabies and best of all were the hippos running about on the grassy areas. Bird highlights: Purple-crested Turaco, Verreaux’s Eagle-owl, Narina Trogon, Crowned Hornbill
29th November
After a leisurely breakfast, departed for the short drive to Gibbs Farm right on the edge of the Ngorongoro conservation area. En-route stopped at the town of Karatu for a few supplies which was quite interesting. Relaxed once at the farm, apart from a short walk around the very impressive vegetable garden. Bird highlights: White-tailed Blue Flycatcher
30th November
In the morning walked up to the Elephant caves. As this is in the conservation area we had to be accompanied by a ranger, probably wise seeing as though we saw evidence of recent elephant, buffalo and leopard activity along the way – we only actually saw baboons though! The walk took about 3 hours and it was great to be in the bush without having to be in the vehicle. Good birding too! Rest of the day was relaxing around the grounds. Bird highlights: Crested Guineafowl, Lemon Dove, Cinnamon-chested bee-eater, scaly-throated honeyguide, grey-capped warbler, Grey-headed Negrofinch.
1st December
Morning birdwalk around the farm then off to the Ngorongoro Crater after breakfast and the end of tarmac roads for the rest of the safari! The crater is amazing – a true world spectacle! That’s even without the fact it is teeming with wildlife! Our first views from the rim were breathtaking. We went for an afternoon game drive after checking into our lodge. The numbers of various antelopes and wildebeast on the slopes and plains were amazing and we were lucky enough to see a family of lions in the marsh, albeit quite distant, but the highlight of the day was, after seeing 2 cheetahs lying resting, finding another loping elegantly through the grass! Bird highlights: Amur falcon, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Tacazze Sunbird
2nd December
Fantastic early morning drive in the crater started impressively when after hearing a loud roar, we found a large lone male lion wandering across the plain! Shortly after this a lone Black Rhino was spotted and we watched and waited patiently as it started to make its way closer to us. Unfortunately the gradual arrival of the masses upset the beast and it then headed away from the road. In the afternoon we drove to Oldupai Gorge, the birthplace of man, where we were given a talk about the discoveries of Dr Leakey. To break up the long drive to the Serengeti we decided to take an overnight stop at Ndutu and this was such a good decision as this was a highlight of the trip (see the write-up above). As we neared the lodge Zoya spotted 2 lions resting on a river bed and we were able to drive right up to them. Even relaxing in the evening we were treated to Genets in the restaurant and a Hyena walked right past us as we were enjoying a few beers around the campfire. Bird highlights: African Rail, Rusty Babbler, Black-chested Snake-eagle
3rd December
A pre-breakfast game drive from the lodge revealed 2 separate Honey Badgers – brilliant to see these strange animals in the daylight. There wasn’t too much else around here though as our visit was well into the dry season and the migration was elsewhere. We would stress though that this shouldn’t put anyone off visiting here. After breakfast we headed into the Serengeti. One of our first stops happened on a pride of lions along a marsh – including a mating pair, which was interesting, if not exhausting just to look at! We also started to have our first encounters with the rather annoying tetse flies – very painful! In the evening after dinner the Sopa Lodge choir provided a lovely end to the day. Bird highlights: Abyssinian Scimitarbill, White-throated Robin, Red-throated Tit, Banded Parisoma
4th December
Full day drive in the Serengeti started with a Hyena munching on a fresh kill (it had just chased off the Cheetah which killed it which we missed by only a few minutes!), but it was great to see the Hyena devour the prey under the watchful gaze of gathering vultures! Today was to be filled with many highlights though – next was an amazing herd of several hundred Buffalo heading to the river for water. Lunch was taken at the centre and was in the company of some very friendly Dwarf Mongoose and Rock Hyrax, as well as countless weavers and finches. Later in the afternoon Zoya spotted some Lions resting under a tree which we watched with interest as they were chased away by a passing herd of Elephants also eager for the shade. Then news came through of a Leopard up a nearby tree. We arrived in the nick of time as it became agitated by a nearby troupe of baboons and leapt out of the tree into long grass and was lost to view. As we searched for it over the next few hours we were really lucky to stumble across a Caracal crossing the road! The Leopard was later spotted up another, but sadly more distant tree. What a day! 5th December
Balloon safari day! A holiday of so many highlights this was fantastic – floating above the herds of animals sometimes barely clearing the trees......and grass!! We even spotted 2 Cheetahs walking elegantly across the plains. On the ground again we were greeted by several glasses of champagne and the best breakfast of the trip – in the heart of the Serengeti! We then relaxed back at the lodge for a while with a brief trip out to Lake Magadi late afternoon. Bird highlights: Double-banded Courser, Pygmy Falcon, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse,
6th December
Sadly, our final day on safari. After a leisurely breakfast we headed for the airstrip and on the way bumped into 3 Cheetahs feeding on a kill, sadly some way from the road but we loved watching these magnificent animals so decided to stay with them until it was time to get our flight. We were rewarded and amazed when after they finished their feed they all got up and walked straight towards the waiting vehicles – walking between them to cross the road! What an end to a magnificent safari! We caught a rather bumpy flight to Zanzibar and following a bumpy drive arrived to our lovely lodge on the sea to finish our holiday with a little relaxation. Bird highlights: Crab Plover, Dimorphic Egret.
7th December
Took the Safari Blue trip from the next beach – a great day out and excellent value. After some excellent snorkelling on a nearby reef (terns covering the adjacent Cay) even though in the company of tiny stinging jellyfish, we went out to look at the local Pacific Humpback Dolphins, before enjoying a great BBQ on a local beach. We headed back late afternoon by sail – lovely day and only $65 included all the beer you could need! It also introduced us to the local drink – Amurula – which we continued to enjoy over the next few days! Bird highlights: Brown Noddy, Saunders Tern, Roseate Tern
8th December
Relaxed in the morning and went to look around historic Stonetown in the late afternoon, staying in the evening for a traditional meal at a local restaurant, which was lovely. Bird highlights: Crowned Hornbill
9th December
Spent the last day relaxing around the lodge, before catching flight to Dar Es Salaam. Killed an otherwise dull 6 hour wait for our international flight home by staying at the Slipway, which was pleasant for some late shopping and a nice bite to eat.
