Information on where to watch birds

On the Nordfriesland mainland between Husum and the Danish Border

A brochure strongly recommended: it gives good information on where to watch birds inclusive of a bird checklist which you can download from http://www.wattenmeer-nationalpark.de/wheretowatchbirds.pdf

More websites, though in German:
http://www.ornithologie-schleswig-holstein.de, the website of the Ornithological Study Group for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg
http://www.wattenmeer-nationalpark.de, information on National Park and Biosphere Reserve
http://schleswig-holstein.nabu.de, website of NABU Schleswig-Holstein

From the German Border to Harboøre Tange (Thyborøn) – West Jylland

An excellent brochure/guide on bird watching in West Jutland: ‘Beaks & Breaks’. You can order it from their website: http://www.beaksandbreaks.com

For the latest bird observations in Denmark have a look at http://www.netfugl.dk/observations.php

Where to watch birds

Note: we visited the area at the end of March looking for Pink-footed Geese. Our main pursue was reading c-rings of geese. Though, some other birds did attract our attention and did spent some time observing them. It gave us new ticks on our birding sighting list.

Vest Stadil Fjord, Husby Klitvej (the road between Søndervig and Husby), opposite Strandgarden on the west side of the fjord: giant flocks of Pink-footed Geese (5000+).
Geese are fed with corn in spring time, to keep them away from the farmers’ newly sown fields.
Stadilovej, the road that runs east of Vest Stadil Fjord, crosses a dike with a car park (start trail northwards, for cyclists and pedestrians): Rough-legged buzzard (hunting on the corn field), Common Stonechat.
Nissum Fjord (Fjandø, Thorsminde): Fjandø is not accessible for public, though from Norrø Fjand (small harbor) you have good views to Fjandø. From the main road, follow ‘Jollehavn’, drive right to the end : White-bellied Brent Goose, Brent Goose.

The huge geese-traffic in the air (to the South) caught our attention. Change of weather? Indeed, in the evening our landlord did tell us that up North they had abundant snowfall even storms.
To the north of Thorsminde you have Bøvling Klit. From the main road Thorsmindevej, take right the Vråvej. On your right hand side you see windmills: Pink-footed Goose (161), Corn Bunting.

At the time of our visit there was not that many birds (3:25 pm) but it should be a wonderful resting place for migrating wading birds at the end of May.

Further southwards on the 181 you can easily pull in and walk across the railway line to look out over the lake and two islands: Mute Swans (400).
At Bovling Klit we had some colored-ringed Pink-footed Geese (11)

Skjern Enge: a vast wetland, with well posted walking paths, invited us to stretch our legs. At the moment of our visit we noticed the geese, swans, ducks, wading birds and other aquatic birds. We could not miss out on the black-headed gulls looking for nests. What a sound.

Fuglsandevej: More over a thousand of Pink-Footed Goose. Some c-rings have been read.
