MAIN SITES VISITED

LIYOYELO FARM

We have visited Livingstone many times, staying at Liyoyelo Farm. No longer a farm, this is NOMAD African Travel’s base in Zambia by the Zambezi river, 16 kms west of Livingstone and close to the boundary of Mosi-oa-Tunya park. 105 acres of open bush and thickets, the Zambezi river and well-vegetated islands (reachable on foot when water levels are low) and a strip of tall evergreen trees along the narrow Sinde river forming the eastern boundary of the property, so there’s a good variety of wildlife to be seen. En-suite rooms available at the house - Bushbuck Riverhouse - or camping by prior arrangement. There’s a thatched seating area by the Sinde river, a tree house/viewing platform overlooking the Zambezi and a natural-looking (rock) swimming pool. When we arrived, on 9 October, the bush looked dry and brown but, even before any real rain, leaves began to open and many shrubs and trees came into flower. There were a few short showers mid-month, a bit more later, and everywhere took on a faint hint of green. The Zambezi was very low and we could walk to the islands and reedbeds. The Sinde river was rapidly drying up, leaving long stretches of soft mud and shallow pools. Our intention this time was to find as many species as possible at Liyoyelo and its immediate surroundings. We spent 22 days here (about a week elsewhere) and added some new species to the site list, now standing at 263 birds and about 18 mammals.

Lots of forest clearance along stretches of this road - much more human activity than we saw in January 2007. It’s another 113kms (just over 3 hours) to Sioma and the road is even worse. Species recorded mostly from vehicle, very few stops.

NINA FISHING CAMP and SURROUNDINGS

In Western Province, about 40kms north of Sesheke/Katima Mulilo along a gravel/sand road in poor condition. The camp is on the western bank of the Zambezi river, a nice site with several rustic chalets overlooking rapids (many Rock Pratincoles). Self-catering or catered if pre-booked. A boat is available for river trips or a stay on one of the islands opposite the camp and, of course, fishing. Plenty of walking opportunities - mixed woodland, open bush, cultivated patches, fallow fields.

SPECIES RECORDED IN THE AREA INCLUDED (full details in main species list): Long tailed Cormorant; Striated Heron; Cattle and Little Egrets; Open billed Stork; Hadeda; Osprey; African Fish Eagle; Brown Snake Eagle; African Harrier Hawk; African Goshawk; [?Tawny Eagle]; [Dickinson’s Kestrel]; Eurasian Hobby; Peregrine; Rock Pratincole; African Wattled Lapwing; Ruff; Greenshank; Common Sandpiper; African Skimmer; Emerald spotted Wood dove; Red eyed and African Mourning Doves; Meyer’s Parrot; Jacobin Cuckoo; Senegal Coucal; Brown hooded, Giant and Pied Kingfishers; Little and Blue cheeked Bee eaters; Hoopoe; Ground Hornbill [H]; Bradfield’s and African Grey Hornbills; Red breasted, White tailed and Barn Swallows; African Pied Wagtail; Black Cuckoo shrike; Yellow bellied Greenbul; Terrestrial Brownbul; Common Bulbul; White browed (Heuglin’s) Robin chat; White browed Scrub Robin; Kurrichane Thrush [H]; Willow Warbler; Black chested Prinia; Grey backed Camaroptera; African Paradise and Spotted Flycatchers; Chinspot Batis; Amethyst, Scarlet Chested, Collared and White bellied Sunbirds; Sulphur Breasted Bush shrike; Brown crowned Tchagra; Black backed Puffback; Tropical Boubou; Violet backed Starling; Southern Masked Weaver; Red billed Quelea; Blue Waxbill; Jameson’s Firefinch; Golden breasted Bunting; Chacma Baboon; Bush Squirrel; Cape Clawless Otter; Nile Crocodile; Tropical House Gecko; Cape Dwarf Day Gecko; Striped Skink; Foam nest Frog.

SIOMA CAMP and GAME MANAGEMENT AREA

Sioma River Camp is about 73 kms north of Nina Camp (315 kms from Livingstone, 113 kms from Katima Mulilo). The gravel/sand road is in poor condition with some badly eroded sections and a 4x4/good ground clearance vehicle is required. There are plans for upgrading the road but this isn’t likely to happen before 2010. About 1km south of the Camp there is a road barrier where you may be stopped; if your vehicle is not Zambian registered you have to pay a small tax. Our vehicle clearly showed a Zambian tax disc etc. but they tried insisting it was Zimbabwean; we argued, showing the guy all our Zambian documents, told him we were going to see Hans Aaskov at Sioma Camp, and we were allowed through.

We stayed at River Camp (3 nights) but there is also a Bush Camp in the GMA close to the north west corner of the National Park - 32kms from River Camp by gravel/sand road, or 55kms through the GMA on sand tracks. River Camp is in an excellent wooded setting beside the Zambezi. It is still not completed but chalet-tents are available for self-catering and there is a separate camp site. It’s adjacent to the Game Management Area (?? “miombo” woodland ) which means there is some protection but access and residence is unrestricted and (controlled) hunting is allowed. This GMA adjoins the Sioma Ngwezi National Park. For more detail about the Camp see www.siomacamp.com

We spent a day driving in the GMA (stopping frequently to clear trees broken down by elephants) and walking around the four Ijobwe pools. The woodland wasn’t brilliant for mammals but seemed good enough for a wide range of bird species. There are some good stretches of woodland with a reasonable understorey, open grassy areas with scattered shrubs and a group of four permanent pools a few kms from the National Park boundary. The whole area deserves more attention.

We also took a boat along the Zambezi (about 12kms), then a 15-20 minute walk to Ngonye Falls.

We can certainly recommend a stay at Sioma Camp particularly for those on route to Liuwa Plains further north but also for anyone wanting a shorter trip from Livingstone. The Bush Camp, when completed, will be worth a longer stay with or without Liuwa Plains. A list of bird species recorded by Bob Stjernstedt is available from Hans Aaskov siomacamp@gmail.com

SPECIES RECORDED AT RIVER CAMP + GAME MANAGEMENT AREA INCLUDED (full details in main species list): Little Grebe; Cattle Egret; Striated Heron; Hamerkop; Open billed Stork; Hadeda; Spur winged Goose; Knob billed Duck; Yellow billed Kite; White backed and White headed Vultures; Brown and Western banded Snake eagles; Bateleur; African Harrier hawk; Dark Chanting Goshawk; Lizard Buzzard; Common (Steppe) Buzzard; Tawny and Booted Eagles; Eurasian Hobby; Helmetted Guineafowl; Swainson’s Francolin; Red crested Bustard; Jacana; Water Thick Knee; Rock Pratincole; Three-banded Plover; African Wattled, White headed and Blacksmith Lapwings; Greenshank; Wood and Common Sandpipers; African Green Pigeon [H]; Emerald spotted Wood dove; Namaqua, Red eyed, Ring necked (Cape Turtle) and African Mourning Doves; Meyer’s Parrot; Grey Go-Away Bird; Levaillant’s and Black [H] Cuckoos; White browed Coucal; African Barred Owlet [H]; Square tailed Nightjar [H]; African Palm Swift; Grey headed, Malachite and Pied Kingfishers; Little, Swallow tailed and Blue Cheeked Bee eaters; Lilac breasted Roller; Green Woodhoopoe; Bradfield’s Hornbill; Yellow fronted Tinkerbird [H]; Miombo Pied Barbet; Rufous naped and Fawn coloured Larks; Red breasted, Mosque, Wire tailed and Barn Swallows; African Pied Wagtail; White breasted Cuckooshrike; Common Bulbul; Bearded and White browed Scrub Robins; Northern Wheatear; Groundscraper Thrush; Willow Warbler; Southern Hyliota; Rattling and Grey (Tinkling) Cisticola; Black chested Prinia; Grey backed Camaroptera; African Paradise, Pale and Spotted Flycatchers; Chinspot Batis; Arrow marked Babbler; Southern Black Tit; Amethyst, Scarlet chested and White bellied Sunbirds; Lesser Grey and Red backed Shrikes; Sulphur Breasted Bush shrike; Brown crowned Tchagra; Black backed Puffback; Tropical Boubou; Eurasian Golden Oriole; Fork tailed Drongo; Pied Crow; Greater blue eared, Wattled and Violet backed Starlings; Red billed Oxpecker; Blue Waxbill; Black throated Canary; Golden breasted Bunting; Cape Clawless Otter; Common Duiker; Steenbuck; Impala; Striped Skink; Day Geckos; African Python; Guttural Toad. TRACKS and SIGNS of Elephant, Eland, Roan and Zebra.

MOSI-OA-TUNYA PARK and NEARBY SEWAGE POOLS

This small area of protected land on the outskirts of Livingstone is always worth a visit, both for the close views of mammals and the bird life. We spent a day in the park (going back into Livingstone town for lunch during the hottest part of the day). It was, of course, very dry at this time of year but we were still able to find a good number of birds. The adjacent sewage pools are usually worth checking out; although they were well-and-truly choked with weed a good number of birds were foraging in the area..

SPECIES RECORDED IN THE PARK INCLUDED (full details in main species list): Long tailed Cormorant; Striated and Black headed Herons; Cattle, Little and Great White Egrets; Hamerkop; Open billed and Marabou Storks; Hadeda; White faced Tree Duck; Egyptian and Spur winged Geese; Yellow billed Kite; African Fish Eagle; Hooded Vulture; Lizard Buzzard; Helmetted Guineafowl; Water Thick Knee; Rock Pratincole; White headed and Blacksmith Lapwings; Greenshank; Common Sandpiper; Red eyed and Ring necked (Cape Turtle) Doves; African Palm Swift; Brown hooded, Grey headed, Striped and Giant Kingfishers; White fronted and European Bee eaters; Lilac breasted Roller; Green Woodhoopoe; Red billed and African Grey Hornbills; Black collared Barbet; Cardinal Woodpecker; Banded Martin; Wire tailed and Barn Swallows; African Pied Wagtail; Yellow Bellied Greenbul; Common Bulbul; Long billed Crombec; Willow Warbler; Yellow breasted Apalis; Grey backed Camaroptera; Arrow marked Babbler; Southern Black Tit; Scarlet chested Sunbird; Black backed Puffback; Tropical Boubou; Retz’s Helmetshrike; Fork tailed Drongo; Violet backed Starling; Red billed Oxpecker; White browed Sparrow weaver; Blue Waxbill; Chacma Baboon; Vervet monkey; Hippopotamus; Buffalo; Zebra; White Rhino (almost “tame”); Warthog; Giraffe; Impala; Nile Crocodile.
