Overview
An excellent birding trip for a first time visit to Brazil. We (my mother, my 7 year old son Jackson and myself) did 5 nights at Chapada dos Guimaraes in central Mato Grosso, 6 nights at Cristalino Lodge in far north Amazonian Mato Grosso and 5 nights in the northern Pantanal region in far south Mato Grosso. This was probably the right mix between the three destinations.
Guiding
The Tour was arranged through Birding Brazil (www.birdingbraziltours.com) with Fabiano Oliveira as the guide (his web site of bird photos is at www.braziliantropics.multiply.com). Fabiano was superb and I would highly recommend him. Fabiano lives in Chapada, so has access to some great local places as well as the more familiar Agua Fria road etc. Fabiano is also very familiar with the Pantanal and Cristalino, with an amazing knowledge of calls and very keen eyes; we had great success at all sites.
Accommodation
Accommodation was of a high standard throughout.
In Chapada we stayed at Pousada do Parque (www.pousadadoparque.com.br). Very good accommodation with private bathrooms and airconditioning. This pousada is situated in a wonderful green belt area within the Chapada National Park. It has a 1 km board walk, leading onto a longer trail through gallery forest in the valley below, which provided some nice birds seen only here. The Pousada has spectacular views over a huge sandstone back drop (fly by Red and Green Macaws and Blue Headed Parrots) as well as a nice swimming pool. Given some of the good birds on the doorstep, it would seem to be the best place for birders to stay near Chapada.
Cristalino jungle lodge (www.cristalinolodge.com.br) has fully screened chalets of a very high standard with tiled floors, ceiling fans and nice private bathroom facilities, and good food. Great Amazon birding, in a pristine environment with no recent hunting pressure, is on your doorstep.
In the Pantanal we stayed at the Pantanal Wildlife Centre (4 nights) (www.pantanalwildlifecenter.com) which was probably the lowest quality accommodation, reasonably basic although clean with a small swimming pool. Our final site was one night at Porto Jofre, a rather remote primarily fishing targeted hotel (www.portojofre.com.br), which was surprisingly large and well equipped. If you are looking for Jaguars then Porto Jofre, or the close Jaguar Research Centre is the place to be based, a couple of days of cruising the rivers is likely to result in a sighting (we spent one day on the water with no success). Pousada Piuval in the far north of the Pantanal is also apparently very good for birding although it is on a Birding Brazil blacklist as the owners once caught and kept a pet macaw.
Sites
1. Chapada
Chapada is a great place to look for cerrado (tropical woodland, also known as South American savannah) species. In addition there are some very nice patches of gallery forest in the valleys and near rivers that offer a different avifauna mostly of more widespread species. We were misted in for several days that significantly slowed our birding down, although luckily the mist cleared for our last day – lesson is to go straight to Agua Fria road if the weather is good in the early morning.
Key targets seen in the cerrado (referenced to the locations below) include: Red-winged Tinamou (g), Red-legged Seriema (c, f ,g) , Blue-winged Macaw (f), Yellow Faced Parrot (g), White-rumped and White-banded Tanagers, Curl-crested Jay (f), the newly described Chapada Flycatcher (g), Collared Crescentchest (f,c), Coal-crested Finch (f), Rufous-winged Antshrike (f), Rusty Backed Antwren (f), Sooty-fronted Spinetail (a), the very localized Rufous-side Pygmy Tyrant (f), Crested Black Tyrant (lookout over cliffs), Scissor Tailed Nightjar (b), Little Nightjar (b).
Key targets seen in the gallery forests included:, Rusty-margined Guan (b), Planalto Hermit, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper (h), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (a), White-backed Fire-eye (h), Planalto Woodcreeper (h), White-bellied Warbler (a,d), Saffron-billed Sparrow (d), Pale Bellied Tyrant Manakin (a), Fiery-capped Manakin (a), Helmeted Manakin (a), and Band-tailed Manakin (h).
Other good birds not often seen on Chapada trip reports included: Small Billed Tinamou (c), Tataupa Tinamou (d), Russet Crowned Crake (d), Pheasant Cuckoo (d), Ash Coloured Cuckoo (e), Spot Backed Puffbird (c), Grey Headed Kite (b), Rufous-thighed Kite (d), Brown Jacamar (near top of escarpment) and Cinnamon Tanager (c).
Targets missed in the cerrado: Blue Finch failed to show at its usual, although somewhat sporadic, locations – it can be seen at other well birded locations. Some trip reports refer to Horned Sungem which is a more widespread cerrado species.
Greater Rhea, Campo Flicker, Toco and Yellow Ridged Toucans, White eared Puffbird, and Peach Fronted Parakeet were among the common birds
Locations visited around Chapada were:
a. Gallery Forest in valley beneath Pousada do Parque.
b. Road through National Park to Pousada do Parque
c. Estancia 2001 road – a site Fabiano knows to the north west of CDG. There are a couple of turns as you leave CDG, with limited signage. Estancia 2001 was the most obvious sign, with some further signs towards the waterfall, and a mine (Morada do Sol or Cachoeira (waterfall) do Marinbondo).
d. Gallery Forest in valley to east of road to CDG. Turn right off the main Cuiaba – CDG road several km past the NP road (and several km before CDG) onto a dirt road. Travel through cerrado for c500m and then into a gallery forest. The forest was really productive with the standout being a good look at a Pheasant Cuckoo, which called and wing rustled for a considerable period of time. On the far side of the valley there are some overgrown fields.
e. Toca da Loba road – one of the few turns (east) off the Cuiaba – CDG road about 5-10km before you reach the escarpment. Cerrado habitat that is accessible if the escarpment is misted in, and also a possible site for Blue Finch.
f. Agua Fria road – the place to go birding in CDG. Cerrado habitat that looks similar to much other cerrado around but somehow seems to hit the key species. Turn west off the Cuiaba-CDG road just before you get to CDG. One of the few large dirt roads, there are houses on the right for the first 100-200m. Most birds seem to be in the next 200-500m.
g. Cave Road – a more distant cerrado site Fabiano knows well, driving north for c1-2 hours from CDG through degraded farmland before finally turning onto Cave Road (more detailed instructions would be needed before trying to find it). The display we saw of Chapada Flycatcher was incredibly distinctive and for me an unexpected highlight of the trip.
h. Jamacá Valley – a friend of Fabiano’s has a patch of secondary gallery forest on a river just on the north side of CDG.
2. Cristalino
Cristalino is a 1.5 hour drive from Alta Floresta and a 30 minute boat trip across the Teles Pires River (yellow brown water) and up the Cristalino River (black water). This area is apparently one of the richest areas of the Brazilian Amazonian with pristine rainforest at the doorstep. with Blue and Yellow Macaws, Blackish Nightjar and other good birds around the chalets. No hunting allowed us to see several Razor Billed Curassows as well as Red Throated Piping Guans and Spix’s Guans. Also good primates including White-whiskered Spider Monkeys (on the north side of the Teles Pires river), White-nosed Saki Monkey (with red noses when excited), Brown Capuchin Monkey, and Night Monkey outside the cabins one night.
A couple of days were quite dry during our stay which may have affected some birds, and some species were quite unresponsive to playback. Foliage gleaners and woodcreepers were comparatively very underrepresented.
The must see range restricted bird is Bare Eyed Antbird, and to a lesser extent Black Girdled Barbet. Kawall’s Parrot, Madeira Parakeet , Spix’s Warbling Antbird , and Glossy Antshrike were the other four Brazilian endemics that we saw. Guinean Gnatcatcher was at the very edge of its range and Fabiano’s only lifer of the trip. Grey Bellied Hawk was a very good sighting.
There were lots of heard only birds picked up by Fabiano (lists below are seen only).
A neomorphus (ground cuckoo) called and bill clacked at seemingly close range on the Serra trail but could not be really seen (partially glimpsed by Fabiano). Barred Forest Falcon was calling in the background at the same time, a short time later Chestnut Tailed Antbird was heard but did not show itself. Cryptic Forest Falcon was another that was heard only (remained hidden in leaves above our heads at the start of Jorge’s trail). Rufous Necked Puffbird remained out of sight on Jorge’s trail.
As an Amazon site there is a lot to justify a return trip. On a repeat visit I would target the above heard only birds, Harpy Eagle (nesting again at Alta Floresta – but this required losing a day at Cristalino proper, a trade-off I was not willing to make), Crimson-bellied Parakeet (perhaps best seen by waiting at the animal lick for roosting birds to fly past), Point Tailed Palmcreeper, Tooth Billed Wren (Fabiano had this twice) and Chestnut Belted (Snethlage’s) Gnatcatcher. We did not try for my previously seen Zigzag Heron, Black Spotted Bare Eye (heard on Jorge’s trail) or Hoatzin (a long way further up the river).

a. Moriche palms on way to Cristalino.

i. New Serra (Jorge’s) trail – great mix of forest, and gave us our most successful day.

3. Pantanal
The Pantanal is a great location to see a lot of birds relatively easily - we saw 116-122 birds on each full day and that was without trying to maximize any day lists.
Driving south from Cuiaba for c130km till you reach the beginning of the Transpantaneira, a dirt road “highway” with wooden bridges every couple of km. At this time of year the savannah was quite dry, so pools near the elevated Transpantaneira concentrated birds.
Our first stop was the Pantanal Wildlife Centre (formerly known as Fazenda Santa Teresa), with three main habitats to bird.
a. The access road and fields surrounding the centre were surprisingly productive, given that they just look like fields with a little bit of water and a few trees. They had a lot of the targets including the Hyancinth Macaw, Chotoy Spinetail, Buff-bellied Hermit, White Woodpecker, Pale-crested Woodpecker, Aplomada Falcon, Crane Hawk. Ash Throated Crake was a bonus in thick grass near the Transpantaneira (about 30m down the access road, at the beginning of the airfield) and the Tawny Bellied Seedeater on the access road is not commonly seen in the northern Pantanal. Orange-backed Troupial and Gray-crested Cachalote were common around the lodge, and Rufous Fronted and Greater Thornbirds and Yellow Chinned Spinetail were all close by in the fields. At night Spot Tailed Nightjar was approached in the fields and Fabiano was able to pick them up for a truly close look.
b. The Pixaim river was great birding – with superb views of Sungrebe, Sunbittern, a lone juvenile Agami Heron (our only one of the trip), Capped Heron, Bare Faced Ibis, quite common Boat Billed Herons (as dusk approached), all 5 kingfishers, Black Collared Hawk (common throughout Pantanal), Great Black Hawk, plus the common Pantanal water birds such as abundant Gray-necked Wood Rail and Rufescent Tiger Herons, and Plumbeous and Green Ibis. Bare Faced Curassow was also quite easy to see on the river banks. As night set in Band Tailed Nighthawks hawked over the river. A close encounter with Giant River Otters was one of the highlights of the trip for me.
c. The gallery forest on the Pixaim was the third main habitat at this stay and turned up most of the other targets such as Chestnut Bellied Guan and Mato Grosso Antbird (two restricted range species - the former, a Brazilian endemic, quite easy to see and the latter showing with just a little bit of patience), Helmeted Manakin, Green Backed Becard, Rusty-backed Spinetail, Band-tailed Antbird, Large-billed Antwren, Plain Antvireo, Flavescent Warbler, Masked Gnatcatcher, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Plain Tyrannulet, Saffron Finch. Also had Saffron Billed Sparrow from near the staked out Great Potoo roost site.
Driving further south you pass through the Fields of Jofre. This was how I had previously imagined the Pantanal to be: the birds were present in large numbers, with plenty of Limpkin, Southern Screamers, Maguari and Wood Storks and Jabiru, along with the rest of the herons and the odd Sunbittern. A couple of Scarlet Headed Blackbirds, were only seen at one other site on the Transpantaneira. However as we drove back the next day with storm clouds massing, the bird numbers had really dropped. Fabiano also caught a “smallish” 7 foot Yellow Anaconda off the road for us to admire.
Porto Jofre and the Cuiaba river was the next destination – the end of the Transpantaneira. The jaguar river cruise did not deliver the hoped for Jaguar (about a 1 in 3 chance) but did give us another amazing close up with a group of Giant River Otters. Notable birds included Hyacinth Macaws roosting in the lodge gardens, Fawn Breasted Wren across the road from the lodge (much harder to see further north), Nacunda Nighthawk over the lake, Red Billed Scythebill, Rusty Backed Spinetail (also seen near the Pixaim). Black and Gold Howler Monkeys were also seen several times from the Cuiaba river.
We then retraced our steps via PWC, and with more birding off the Transpantaneira including good views of Scaly Headed Parrots and more Blue Fronted Parrots. We also saw several endangered Marsh Deer off the Transpantaneira.
To the north of the PWC and east of the Transpantaneira we birded the forested access road to another of the lodges and got our only Great Rufous Woodcreeper.
Near the northern end of the Pantanal there is a shop on the road (the only one from memory). Behind this is a walkway to a small tower that produced our only White Eyed Attila. This was very productive for mammals with Silvery (Black Tailed) Marmoset, South American Coati, Azara’s Agouti and Collared Peccaries.
We had no real ‘dips’ in the Pantanal as we saw all the restricted range species plus all the species where the northern Pantanal is the best place to see them. More widespread species such as Golden Collared Macaw would probably be next on the target list.

All species were seen by myself. Eleanias and Myiarchus flycatchers were also all heard (or seen responding to tapes) before being recorded as ‘seen’. Cinereous Tinamou was heard but seen only very poorly. Collared Forest Falcon seen only relatively briefly in flight.
