The Birding trip on West Java with Irish David Eamon as my costumer and me Indra Ferdinand as a guide from if-ecoadventures. Starts from 09/06/2009 untill 09/12/2009. The target - 200 species of birds that occur in West Java including all the endemic species. The trip started from Gede Pangrango National Park, Muara Angke mangrove reserve, Carita, and Pulau Dua. On the first day we decided to go birding for low part of Gede Pangrango National Park. Bright weather on day birding and has fantastic result, total of 45 species which are, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Linchi Swiftlet, Blood-breasted Flowerpecker, Mountain White-eye, Oriental White-eye, Great Tit, Orange-spotted Bulbul, Javan Grey-throated White-eye, Olive-backed Tailorbird, Ashy Drongo, Black-winged Flycather-shrike, Chesnut-fronted Shrike-babbler, Sunda Blue Robin, Java Fulvetta, Sunda Warbler, Mountain Tailorbird, Flame-fronted Barbet, Crescent-chested Babbler, Pygmy Wren-babbler, White-bibbed Babbler, White-browed Shrike-babbler, Little Pied Flycatcher, Oriental Cuckoo, Blue Nuthatch, Javan Kingfisher, Grey-headed Canary-flycatcher, Sunda Bulbul, Mountain Leaf-warbler, Indigo Flycatcher, Spotted Crocias, Sunda Minivet, Giant Swiftlet, Lesser Forktail, Rufous-tailed Fantail, Javan Tesia, Little Spiderhunter, White-browed Wren-babbler, Crimson-winged Woodpecker, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Snowy-browed Flycatcher, Chestnut-bellied Partridge, White-flanked Sunbird, Javan Hawk-eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Pygmy Tit and Salvadori’s Nightjar.

Second and third day at Gede Pangrango National Park have few more new birds for David, we start around 05:30 in the morning. The weather in the morning very clear in both day and very warm in the middle day. Not so many activities from birds, maybe because to warm. New birds like Sunda Thrush, Lesser Shortwing, Sunda Whistling Thrush, Brown-throated Barbet, Ruddy Cuckoo-dove, Black-thighd Falconet, Fire-tufted Barbet, Javan Cochoa, Mountain Serin, Javan Trogon, Olive-backed Sunbird, Long-tailed Shrike, Bar-winged Prinia, Horsfield’s Babbler, Yellow-throated Hanging-parrot, Spotted Dove, Spotted Kestrel, Asian House Martin, Striated Grassbird, Grey Wagtail, Black Eagle.

After birding at Gede Pangrango National Park we go to muara angke on the 4thday, start at 04:00 in the morning from Freddy’s Home stay. Arrive at muara angke arround 06:00 in the morning, birding on the mangrove area have good result. Ruddy-breasted Crake, White-bellied Waterhen, Sunda Woodpecker, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Yellow-vented Bulbul, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker, Grey Heron, Plain Flowerpecker, Sunda Coucal, Black Bittern, Oriental Darter, Clamorous Reed Warbler, Javan Pond Heron, Javan Myna, Sooty-headed Bulbul, Pink-necked Green Pigeon, Scaly-breasted Munia, Edible-nest swiftlet, Rufous Night- heron, Island Collared Dove, White-browed Crake, Purple Heron, Black-winged Starling, Black-crowned Night-heron, Sunda Teal, Rock Pigeon, Purple Swamp-heron, Lesser Coucal, Green Sandpiper, Litle Bittern, Ashy Tailorbird, Javan Munia, White-breasted Wood-swallow, Pied Fantail, Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker, Plain-throated Barbet, Scarlet Minivet, White-shouldered Triller, Common Iora, Orange-bellied Flowerpecker. Birding until about 11:00, then start to go to Carita, arrive arround 03:00, we take a short break, then we go birding to the waterfall track on short evening we have some new birds like Small Minivet, Black Drongo, Black-capped Babbler, Emerald Dove, Abbot’s Babbler, Gray-cheeked Tit-babbler, Black-nest Swiftlet. After dark we try to find Javan Barred owlet but no result just hear the call and the call from Javan Frogmouth.

Second day at Carita we start birding on 05:30, the weather is bright and warm, new birds we find like Collared Kingfisher, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Banded Kingfisher, Black-banded Barbet, Grey-cheeked Bulbul, Red-eyed Bulbul, Ruby cheeked Bulbul, Coppersmith Barbet, Blue-and-white Flycatcher, Temmick’s Sunbird, White-bellied Sea eagle, Grey-rumped Tree Swiftlet, Banded Pitta.

Third day in Carita we decide to go to Rakata island for birding, we use speed boat and take 1,5 hours from Carita to Rakata island. Start about 05:30 and arrive at 07:00, the forest is very fantastic and there are no specific track to go to the top of Mountain Rakata, we try to make our own track but its to hard so we decide to do birding just on the low part close to the coast. Some good birds we find like Large Green Pigeon, Mangrove Whistler, Pink-headed Imperial Pigeon, Black-naped Fruit-dove, Magpie Robin, Plain-throated Sunbird, Fulvous-chested Jungle-flycatcher, Asian Koel, Asian Glossy Starling, Little Cuckoo-dove, Short-tailed Starling, Black-headed Bulbul, Green Imperial Pigeon, Pacific Swallow, Black-naped Tern.

That’s all the species we find at rakata island which very close to Krakatoa active volcano mountain. We believe if we go higher to the top of mountain rakata we can find more species because we heard all day bird call from the higher part from the island. After around 15:30 we go back to Carita, around 17:00 we arrive at Carita.

Last day on the trip, we go to Pulau Dua, start from Carita early morning around 04:00. Arrive at Pulau Dua around 06:30.the weather were so bright and clear. On the first track we find Javan Plover, Little Egret, Glossy Ibis, Intermediate Egret, Little Black Cormorant, Savannah Nightjar, Whimbrel, White-throated Kingfisher, Zitting Cisticola, Wood Sandpiper, Great Egret, Grey Plover, Pacific Golden Plover, Common Redshank, Striated Heron, Sacred Kingfisher, Blue-eared Kingfisher.

Birding until about 11:00, after that we start to go to Jakarta Airport.

Total of birds that’s seen with David Eamon is 159 species including the endemics species, some birds I find but David didn’t see are White-bellied Fantail, Grey-breasted Spiderhunter, Chestnut-backed Scimitar-babbler, Pink- headed Fruit-dove, Sunda Bush-warbler, Common Goldenback, Javan Barred Owlet, Grey-capped Woodpecker. So total birds seen is 167 species.
