Introduction

After our family trip to South-east Brazil earlier in 2010 we decided to give ourselves a full day birding trip while we were still a little familiar with the birds of South-east Brazil. While preparing the family trip it very soon pointed out a couple of destinations. Also the tactic was clear after a couple of mornings with Rick Simpson around Ubatuba. Stay at a lodge or hotel with guided trips included to maximize the number of species (most of all of course new ones!).

The Serra dos Tucanos Lodge near Novo Friburgo was our first choice as many of our friends only had good things to say about their stay there. After reading some more trip reports with guided tours from Serra dos Tucanos and studied their web site we decided to give it a try.

Visit www.serradostucanos.com.br for all necessary info and contact. We can really recommend a stay there.

Our second choice of destination was Itatiaia National Park. We decided to ask Rick Simpson to come up there and guide us for 4-5 days. After negotiating price and time table, and some puzzling with the schedule we said OK to Rick. Unfortunately he had to be back home on Friday so we had to end the trip a couple of days earlier than we had planned from the beginning.

After some more email conversation with both the owner Andy Foster at Serra dos Tucanos and Rick Simpson we had finally booked a 9-day stay at SdT, a transfer to Itatiaia as well as the transfer from the airport to the lodge, 4 nights at Hotel do Ypé in Itatiaia N.P and guiding up there. Rick also accepted to take us back to the airport in Rio de Janeiro.

Contact person at Hotel do Ypé is Cassia, she speaks excellent English. cassia@hoteldoype.com

Rick can be contacted at rick@rick-simpson.com or visit his web page www.rick-simpson.com for information and contact.

The total cost for the trip was about 3200Euro, all included. Flight ticket’s, full board accommodation both at Serra dos Tucanos and Hotel do Ypé, all excursions at SdT, all transfers and Rick’s services.

During our stay at SdT and as company on the excursions we were joined by Duncan Ford, Angus Molyneux, Jane & Steve Thomas, Jane & Richard Palmer and at the end of the week Sheila Stead joined us. Many thanks for their company and efforts to find and identify the birds.

Of course a lot of thanks to Cirilio, the local guide at SdT for his hard work. His knowledge of the birds and where to find them on the various excursions was invaluable. Besides he is a nice and humble man.

As mentioned above Rick Simpson guided us up in Itatiaia N.P. and to Agulhas Negras and we really appreciate his work and efforts to find us the missing species. His knowledge and help was invaluable and also many thanks for his great company. We can really recommend Rick’s services.

Logistics

We flew with the Brazilian company TAM and that meant SAS to Frankfurt as TAM now belongs to the Star Alliance group. Then TAM to Rio de Janeiro and on our way back home we flew from Rio via Heathrow, London. The final leg to Stockholm was with SAS. The round ticket cost was about 710Euro.

The transfer from Rio to the lodge was arranged by Andy and was paid when we left the lodge. The journey takes about 1 1/2 hours.

We gave Andy information in advance which excursions we did not want to miss. He set up a day program that was for all the guests. One could choose and was charged for those participated on. We were excellently guided by Cirilio on all excursions except Macae do Cima/Bamboo trail when Andy split the group because the Bamboo trail is too narrow for more than 6 people. Cirilo guided on the Bamboo trail and Andy did the Macae do Cima.

All transport on the excursions were included in the day/half day fee.

Transfer to Itatiaia took a little less than four hours and the cost was about 300Euro. This had to be paid cash to the driver.
In Itatiaia one needs a car to easily come down to the former hotel Simon from where the Tres Picos trail starts, as well as the full day trip to Agulhas Negras or a visit to the small Itatiaia marsh, down in the village.

Daily log

28/1.Left Stockholm/Arlanda airport in the afternoon for a 2-hour flight to Frankfurt where we embarked the TAM aircraft for an overnight flight to Rio de Janeiro.

29/1. Arrived in Rio around 7 am and a little more than one hour later we were on our way to Serra dos Tucanos. The drive took about 1 ½ hour. Turned up at the lodge around 10 am and were met by Andy Foster, the owner, who immediately showed us our room as well as a number of species around the lodge garden. We birded from the veranda until lunch and after that we walked the lodge trails for the rest of the day.

30/1. A half day excursion to Portao Azul was planned today. This area is situated about a one hour drive from the lodge. The weather was excellent with clear sky and no wind.

The area around Portao Azul is a stronghold for Half-collared Sparrow. We walked along a small road through different habitats and Cirilio worked hard and at the end we had a really good list of birds. Great and Tufted Antshrike, Ochre-bellied Tody-Flycatcher, Rufous Gnateater, Drab-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant, Yellow Tyrannulet, the tiny “hummer” Amethyst Woodstar and of course Half-collared Sparrow to name a few. Headed back to the lodge for lunch and the afternoon was spent on the trails around SdT. Best bird in the afternoon was no doubt the Saffron Toucanet Andy discovered at the “High level feeder” at the back of the lodge.

31/10. Sunday and Election Day in Brazil, therefore no trips were planned. We all set out on the lodge trails in various groups, meeting each other on different occasions and shared information. Solitary Tinamou called early in the morning, we found both Saffron and Spot-billed Toucanet along the trails, good views of a calling male Pin-tailed Manakin. In the lodge garden a Saw-billed Hermit visited the “hummer” feeders and we noted both Crested and Chestnut-crowned Becard breeding in the same tree.

1/11. Today a full day excursion along the Sumidouro Road (or the Jacamar excursion) was scheduled. We travelled through several types of habitat. Unfortunately we were a little unlucky with the weather, rain from time to time, so one of the loops along a dirt road was impassable and therefore cancelled. That’s the main reason that we did not break the Jacamar record of about 130 species. We did however see a lot of target species like Red-legged Seriema, Blue-winged Macaw, Three-toed Jacamar, Serra Antwren and many more.

2/11. A half day trip to REGUA Wetlands about an hours drive from the lodge was todays excursion. First of all we ticked off the Tropical Screech-owl on day roost. Then we walked through a nice piece of rainforest, ending up by the wetland. Among all the new species we noted Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (a new species even for Cirilio), Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Whistling Heron, several species of antbirds, Lemon-chested Greenlet and Moustached Wren. In the afternoon a Common Thornbird showed up in the lodge garden. According to Andy this was a first for the lodge grounds.

In the afternoon we walked the Cedae Trail in light rain. Rather few birds were noted because of that.

3/11. Full birding day to Serra do Orgaos National Park. We started with walking the main road in the lower section. Rather quiet and with very few birds this morning. Drove up to “upper section” and had our packed lunch. Then we slowly walked the boardwalk to the end and back again. Up here it was much better bird activity. Birds seen or heard included White-bibbed Antbird, Rufous-tailed (Brazilian) Antthrush and several heard Sharpbills.

4.11. Full day birding to Pico da Caledonia, which included in a rather steep uphill walk. Though all the great birds we were shown made the walk a lot easier to handle. Birds encountered were Gray-winged and Black-and-Gold Cotinga, Plovercrest, Itatiaia Spinetail, Serra do mar Tapaculo (even seen very well), Shear-tailed Gray-Tyrant, Rufous-capped Antshrike and many more. We ended the day with an hour of bird watching at the lower parts of the area. That was a success as the group got stunning views of a Swallow-tailed Cotinga.

5.11. Today Andy split the group in to two. Bamboo trail was on today’s program. This is a rather narrow trail and not suitable for more than 6 people, if one will have a fair chance of getting descent views of the birds. Cirilo guided along the Bamboo trail and we had a pleasant day with very nice weather. This is really a trail that seems to come up with almost anything. Birds noted during the day included Hooded Berryeater, wonderful sightings of Bare-throated Bellbird, Spotted Bamboowren (heard only), Slaty Bristlefront, Sharp-billed Treehunter and Ruddy Quail-Dove to mention a few.

6.11. Theodoro trail was on today’s program for us. Despite pouring with rain more or less continuously before lunch Andy did a tremendous job. Finally we had seen a perched Blue-bellied Parrot, according to Andy it rarely happens that these parrots respond to tapes. Also stunning views of a Shrike-like Cotinga was a result of Andy’s knowledge of his birds and hard work. A calling Varigated Pitta was added to the list before we went back to the car, because Duncan and Andy had go back to the lodge and pack as they were going back to the UK.

The rain stopped as the rest of us headed for the nearby Macae de Cima. While having our packed lunch it was actually dry weather. We ticked off Gray-capped Tyrannulet and heard distant Giant Antshrike as well as Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin while the rain started to poor down again. We decided to go back to lodge and stayed there for the rest of the day. This was a little unexpected and abrupt end of our stay at Serra dos Tucanos. Overall we were very satisfied with our stay there, some rain one has to accept, it is not called rain forest for nothing.

7.11. Left SdT around 7 am for the transfer to Itatiaia N.P. We arrived safe to Hotel do Ypé around 11.30 am, checked in and birded around the hotel until lunch. Continued after lunch, when we also had a walk a couple of hundred meters along the entrance road, in both directions. Found ourselves some good birds like Black-tailed Tityra, Brown Tanager and breeding Rufous-capped Motmot. We also spent quite a long time watching two stunning male Frilled Coquettes. We ended the day with watching a hunting Short-tailed Nighthawk from our balcony.

8.11. A lazy day walking around on our own. Before lunch we birded along the road down to the former hotel Simon and back again. A lot of time was also spent around the hotel. In the afternoon there was some thunder and lightning with a heavy rain shower. Rick arrived around 5 pm. Best birds of the day were Pale-browed Treehunter and a couple of Rufous-headed Tanagers.

9.11. Early breakfast and then a short drive down to hotel Simon. Walked and birded along the Tres Picos trail until lunch. Nice birds included Greenish Schiffornis, Large-headed Flatbill, Ochre-rumped Antbird, Fork-tailed Tody-tyrant and Black-capped Piprites to mention some of the species. After lunch we drove down to the look out just below the chocolate shop. Started the afternoon around the “mirador” and then we birded our way back to the hotel with several stops along the road.

10.11. Breakfast 5.30 am and then we drove towards Agulhas Negras for a full day birding up there. Roadside birds on the transfer included Giant Cowbird and Curl-crested Jay. After we had left the main road and started to climb the dirt road, we stopping and birding when Rick heard, for us, interesting species. Parked the car at a small marsh well above the tree line and started to bird along the road. In and around the small marsh we noted Blackish Rail, Highland Elaenia and Itatiaia Spinetail. Several Black-and-gold Cotingas were heard and one seen perched. Thick-billed Saltator and Red-rumped Warbling-Finch were seen and a small flock of Hooded Siskin gave us nice views. On our way back home we stopped at the small Itatiaia marsh.

11.11. Our last morning was a rainy one. We headed towards the former hotel Simon and started to walk the trails. The effort to find some of the birds we so far had missed was severely affected by the weather. The rain did not stop, rather became more unpleasant so we decided to cancel the birding. Went back to Ypé and packed, had our lunch and around 1 pm we drove towards Rio. Stopped and birded at Itatiaia marsh for a while. The transfer went smoothly and we arrived safely at the airport, said goodbye and thanked Rick for his work and great company.

12.11. Arrived in Stockholm late in the afternoon and therefore stayed overnight at the nearby Hotel Ibis. The last leg was with train back home, where we arrived at lunch time, 13.11 with a lot of memories from the Brazilian rain forest in the south east parts of this huge country.
