This report centres around a few days in West Bali, where our primary aim was to seen the Bali Myna, and some birds seen leisurely while having a break on the island after a birding tour of the Lesser Sundas.
1/2 – I met Barbara DeWitt and Bill Watson at Denpasar airport. We were driven to Gilimanuk in West Bali, where we booked into a hotel.
2/2 - We met our guide Hery - balibarat_nationalpark@yahoo.co.id - who also arranged the vehicle transfers, and drove to Labuhan Lalong for our visit to Bali Barat National Park. We boarded a chartered boat for the 30-minute run to Teluk Telor, the area where Bali Mynas raised in a captive breeding program are released into the wild. It took us an hour to find a free-flying Bali Myna which was unbanded. According to Hery, there is some doubt as to whether any originally wild birds remain in the area or whether the small number of unbanded birds present are the progeny of released (and banded) birds. We found banded birds as well, including one hanging about a large aviary which contained recently fledged birds being prepared for release. Black-winged Starling was also found easily in this area. Hery later took us to an area of lowland forest where the highlight was a Fulvous-chested Jungle-Flycatcher. We visited some shrimp ponds for waders and waterbirds, as well as the forested grounds of a resort near Labuhan Lalong, where Green Junglefowl were plentiful.
3/2 – Snorkelling off Menjangan Island.
4/2 – Return from Gilimanuk to Denpasar.
22/2 - 9/3 – With Glenn Scherf, we stayed at the very nice Grand Balisani Suites at Batabelig, north of the bustling tourism centre of Kuta-Seminyak. There were a few nice birds in the area in scattered rice fields and gardens. During this holiday we visited Bedugal in the mountains for a morning.
