A Brief introduction
Belarus is the eastern neighbour of Poland, in fact pre World War 2 , half of it was Poland. The road infra structure is surprisingly, good with many dual carriageways. They take you across the flat countryside of large ancient forests and arable fields which are not too intensively farmed , giving the butterflies and wild flowers a chance to survive. The marshes ,fens and water meadows support a wealth of Waders, Terns as well as a few speciality species such as Aquatic warbler , Terek sandpiper and Great Snipe. The forest and woodlands support all the species of European woodpecker with a good list of Owl species , warblers & Flycatchers but the the star bird is the Azure tit.
Belarus is a safe country the drawback being visas and excessive officialdom. If they could sort that out, ecotourism could be a great source of revenue for the country. Once you get past the Jobsworths , the people are very friendly and generous in an amazing environment. If you are thinking of travelling there I would certainly recommend www.ecotours.hu , great value and they look after you 24/7 with excellent patient guides.

Departing a cold damp Newcastle airport at 0700 arriving at Terminal 1 Heathrow at 0830 then crossed over to Terminal 3 , which took 20 mins on the underground .The Vienna flight took off at 1050 landing at 1400 local time. The flight on landing was impressive the Austrian Tyrol & Alps & the Danube. Local weather was Blue sky 18c. Vienna airport , is very busy with lengthy delays and not enough seating. The Austrian airways flight was supposed to take off at 2035 but like all other eastern European flights that evening there was a delay .Taking off 2 1/2 hours late arriving in Minsk at 0125am.The fun then started. The airport was rough inside, the transit toilets a bit like Indian ones. A strange country , if you are a European not British you have to pay 4 Euros for National health insurance and you have to fill a small visa form you get on the plane. There was confusion regarding my visa as I should have purchased one from the Belarus embassy in London. To get this you need a letter of introduction which I had a scanned copy. So I had to purchase a visa there which was 260 euros (540 euros if you are American) from the office upstairs .Getting there I met another guy in the same situation. The chain smoking man in the office was basically ignorant expecting me to understand their local script, totally unhelpful . After a local military soldier helped me he explained the visa person wanted me to have the original letter of introduction. My rep meanwhile was at arrival awaiting to take me to Minsk 30 km away. I was not allowed to talk to him but the military soldier did and Alex went to Minsk to collect the documentation and just arrived in time as I was being escorted from transit at 0330 to the next flight back to Vienna. I eventually got the visa off Mister Unhelpful leaving at 0500 getting to the Hotel Casino, Minsk at 0530 .
Day 1 28/04/12 Saturday
The weather was blue sky 24C for the day
The hotel on the outskirts of Minsk was £42 for B&B in a clean modern room. Nobody understood English, but were pleasant with a cash machine outside the hotel. I was picked up by Alex , a superb rep at 1145 to return to the airport to meet the rest of the Ecotours group .There were another 2 birding groups at the airport arriving as well. The true holiday started .
A pleasant meal in the airport of shrimps and creamed potatoes at the restaurant .In the arrivals hall there is a money exchange but it can run out of money! , it looks like a blue telephone box (exc. rate was 12,000 Belarus roubles to the pound, but don’t worry they prefer Euros. ) and off we set at 1430 to arrive at our first port of call Belvezhskaya Pusha ,at 2100.The arable flat countryside was interspersed with large deciduous forests. The motorway system was good but on the normal roads a few horse and carts were being used as well as horses for ploughing the fields. Minsk was composed of tenements in this classic communist dictatorship regime . However the suburbs were quite pleasant with wooden rustic single storey houses.
Day 2 29/04/12 Sunday
Daybreak was 0530 up at 0645 blue sky all day 28c .
0700-0815 We walked around the park area around the 2 hotels in the forest. I managed to get a flight view of Black woodpecker straight away and others were constantly drumming. Also there was Grey headed woodpecker calling constantly, its call being like that of a Green, but of shorter duration. Many Hawfinches, Pied Flycatcher , Redstart ,Black Redstart, Wood warbler and Serin surrounded the complex.
Breakfast was Cold meats , yoghurt and fried eggs. Leaving eventually from the complex zone at 0930, as the gates to the park do not open till 0900. We drove the forest roads stopping soon at a glade for Lesser spotted eagle , Grey headed woodpecker, Black Stork, White stork, Honey buzzard and Crane . Thrush nightingales constantly sang in the background with Wood warblers. We then drove after various stops to a location where there was a Great Grey owl nest which had been found by the local guide. The viewing was well managed to minimise disturbance to this amazing bird. Also in the area were 2 male Collared flycatcher and a Middle spotted woodpecker.
Lunch was by the `p.Hapy` river on the Polish border by a checkpoint box. Excellent views of Great reed warbler and Marsh frogs. We then travelled futher down the road to looked over marshland and reed beds with Marsh harriers , 3 pairs of Cranes and we heard reeling Savi`s warblers. Then we visited another local forest that had been staked out by the guide looking for woodpeckers in the afternoon. Eventually we saw Middle spotted woodpecker and heard Three toed woodpeckers. Early evening we went looking for Bison on the grassy plains about 2 miles from the hotels to no avail but found 3 Lesser spotted eagles and a Whinchat.

Day 3 30/04/12 Monday
Weather on the day rose to 30c no wind.
Pre breakfast walk around hotel at Belvezhskaya Pusha . Again many Hawfinch , Pied Flycatcher ,Wood warbler , Great spotted woodpecker and heard Grey headed and Black. Then after breakfast travelled to a local area of established oak woodland at its entrance we found Golden oriole , Woodlark, Hoopoe, Whinchat. Black stork. The local guide then took us in to the forest to a Pygmy owl territory where we taped one out. Set off for Sporovo at 1300 got there at 1600 it was like a small tenement 60`s industrial town however next to it was an established Marsh and woodland. Our small group were to spend 2 nights at the Research station which was positioned at the entrance to the park where we were also to have the best food of the trip. The reserve was behind the centre itself. On the reserve as you walked down to the marsh edge there was a hand ferry to get to the centre of the reserve. We spent 1600-1945 birding seeing Savis , Grasshopper, Great reed ,Sedge warblers as well as Citrine & Yellow wagtail. Of note was Otter spraint and many edible frogs.
Day 4 01/05/12 Tuesday
Got up at 0600 went down to the Marsh. Savis and Grasshopper warblers singing with drumming Common snipe. I managed to photograph 2 White spotted Bluethroat trying to sing on territory being attacked by aggressive Sedge warblers. Marsh harriers were constantly flying over the reeds. After breakfast I found a Fieldfare nest on the grounds as well as a very obliging Wryneck with Thrush nightingale and Golden oriole. We then with local guides started looking for Aquatic warblers heavy bog land on the edge of marshes. We eventually were to go to 4 sites hard work. The first site we watched a fox hunting and 2 orioles with a pair of Montagu harriers displaying with Common buzzard. We then went off to the local fish ponds. Many waders, good views of Caspian Gulls, 5 White tailed eagles, Black stork and Citrine wagtail. We then found a Penduline tit and its tunnel nest ( they make a few and the female eventually selects one) .As we left there there was a quick fly past of 30 White winged black terns and headed off to a tussock marsh looking for the elusive Aquatic warbler , none had been found yet this year. The only thing next to this World War 2 battle site was plenty of Meadow pipits. The temperature was now 31c. As we returned to the research centre there was one site left about 1 mile down the road from the centre itself. As we approached we had a very close fly past of a male Montagus Harrier. Off we bog trotted over the rough terrain in slightly windy conditions .We headed back to the vehicles then Gabor, an amazing patient naturalist, reckoned he could hear an Aquatic warbler .Back out again, and sure enough in a small low juncus type bush one put a good show on. As we walked back we heard yet another singing. At the vehicles we were treated to a close Eastern hedgehog with a Crested tit above. Back at 1900, meal of the trip, 2 types of cured Mackerel ,Rissoles, meats, various salads enough, for an army.
Day 5 02/05/12 Wednesday
28c Blue sky
06000-0815 Sporovo reserve,on the marsh early again Savis warbler but I couldn’t managed a clear image due to the reeds but photoed Bluethroat again. I heard Oriole , Wryneck & Thrush nightingale in the area with quite a few pairs of Fieldfare. We left our friends at the centre at 1000 for Turov. On the way we had a cultural stop of at the city of Pinsk where we were shown around a large catholic church and the Jewish wooden houses by the river. We met up with the other group 15 mins west of Pinsk by some fish ponds which we didn’t drive around. As we had lunch we had distant views of White tailed eagle , Caspian gull , Common gull, Yellow wagtails and the 3 marsh tern species also 6 Black storks. At 1600 we parked on a high long bridge over the marshes west of Turov seeing many Great white egrets , Hooded crows, Marsh terns. We then drove into Turov,a small town in the south east of the country, and straight to the ringing station. A small wooden house by the river Pripayatsky. There were many Ruff leking as well as Garganey and Little tern. We checked in to the hotel at 2000 in the centre of the small town next to the local Bank.
Day 6 03/05/12 Thursday
50% cloud our first clouds of the trip !
0700-0800 I walked over the road and to the left ( east) of the river where there were plenty of Marsh tern, Ruff, 3 Summer plumage Spotted redshank , 2 Garganey as well as White storks on the houses around us with singing Serins.
0930 -1030 we drove to the Azure tit site by the river . There was a pump house at the location with armed guards and quite a few mosquitoes .The 4 drunken guards who were harmless.
We saw 2 straight away , stunning.The books and photographs do not prepare you for probably one if not the best bird in Europe. Also at this location were 2 Penduline tits, Moorhen, Common whitethroat , Marsh harrier & Thrush nightingale. Last year they actually bred in the pumping station itself.
As we drove back to Turov we stopped by the side of the Main road to watch 2 Montagu Harriers displaying around their nest then another joined from a migrating group of Honey Buzzard , Common Buzzard .5 Raven & 6 Black stork. While a Thrush nightingale put a show on,singing and displaying. Back to the Tarov for 1200 then went to a river site for lunch .We heard Terek sandpiper but saw Spotted redshank and many Ruff. We had views of White tailed and Lesser spotted eagle, Marsh terns ,Thrush nightingale & Penduline tit.
After lunch we went to a small village with woodland to look for Woodpeckers but the wood was too bad with mosquitoes and ended up watching raptors by the village, Lesser spotted and white tailed eagle, Black stork, Hobby, Common buzzard, Honey buzzard, Hen harrier and Montagus harrier all in one hour. We left the site at 15.30 and got to the Great Snipe lek area at about 18.30. This area was on the other side of the river to the ringing station ie the south side. To get to it we had to wade through some deep water. We were first confronted with an amazing flock of 500 of White Winged Black Terns ,Yellow Wagtails were plentiful and we even found a black headed variant. Our first Great Snipe was found skulking on a pool near the lek. We had to wait till 19.30 before the Great Snipe started flying in to the lek. There was up to 15 birds. The occasion was somewhat spoilt by some bird photographers who had erected a hide ridiculously close to the leking area. On returning to the vehicle we managed to find our first Terek Sandpiper on the water meadows.
Day 7 04/05/12 Friday
28C Sultry.
Between 0700 and 0800 I turned left(east) from the hotel and walked along the north shore to a foot bridge where I managed to get great views of Middle spotted woodpecker, Thrush nightingale and Golden oriole all in the same tree. After breakfast we spent between 10 and 11 o`clock on a local forest walk. The mosquitoes were horrific. A head net was necessary. However we somehow located Red breasted flycatcher, Pied flycatcher, many Wood warbler. On leaving the forest we went to the arable fields next to it where we observed Lesser spotted eagle and Black stork.
For lunch 12.30 to 1400 we travelled back to the Terek sandpiper river and had terrific views of a Greater spotted eagle being pursued by a Raven. Also there were distant views of White tailed eagle with many waders.
From here we arrived at 14.30 at the raptor viewpoint area and spent most of the afternoon trying to get a clear view of a Corncrake that was calling 5 metres away. We also managed to see Black stork, Lesser spotted eagle and a Common buzzard. On the outskirts of Tarov about 1 mile east from the hotel we came across a flooded field with Waders, Terns, and Wild fowl. We went early evening to the ringing station and watched 30 Ruff in a lek with a Beaver feeding in front of them for 30 minutes.
After our early evening meal we went back to the fields near to where the `Mosquito forest` was and at dusk a European bison appeared as well as a Wild boar. We came across our first Golden plover as well as more Corncrake calling. We gave up early because of the Mosquitos !.
Day 8 05/05/12 Saturday
0715-0800 walked to the east, over the footbridge again from hotel . 2 Thrush nightingale & heard Golden oriole. However we found a Glossy Ibis by the edge of the river amongst the terns & gulls. After 0915 the groups set off for some new local fish ponds to explore. On entering we all had good views of White backed woodpecker. There was a great variety of wildfowl including breeding Smew and Whooper swan. Waders were excellent as well with 2 Terek sandpiper and 2 Temminck`s stint . 4 species of grebe were seen and many Great reed warblers. The final part of the fish ponds were visited and one of the ponds were was drained with 25 black stork feeding. Evidence of many beavers in the drainage ditches too. Terek sandpiper again as well as Little & Common ringed plover. On exiting 2 White tailed eagle were getting mobbed by Ravens. Returning back to Turov we stooped off at an arable farm area looking out for Roller and Crested lark but to no avail but an obliging Marsh Harrier allowed us to get excellent photos.
On getting back to the town and the ringing station we watched them processing 2 Terek sandpiper and an Oystercatcher .The local ringers allowed me to hold both sandpipers!.There are now 10 pairs breeding in a 2km sq by the river , ten years ago there were 30 pairs in the same area. Last year they rang 150 great snipe 30 of which were returns.
Day 9 06/05/12 Sunday
The return to Minsk airport .Whilst travelling we came across our first Black kites .The further we got to Minsk there were more arable fields and less forests. The only hills were massive spoil heaps from areas of Salt mines. We set off at 0715 and got there at 1115.We said our goodbyes at the airport to a great friendly team who coped well with all the problems thrown at them and we were checked onto the flights. Leaving Minsk 1330 arriving at 1500 , Vienna.
Unfortunately the ground crew at Minsk had booked me on the wrong flight and I left Vienna on 1715 flight rather than the 1600 which I should have been on but it allowed me to relax in comfort before landing at Heathrow Terminal 1 at 1900. I then left Terminal 5 at 2100 to arrive back at Newcastle 2250, shattered but a great trip.
