Brief introduction
Turkey is probably one of the best birding regions in the Western Palaearctic. The whole region was hospitable, the road system very good with many motorways. The people could not do enough for us and the cuisine was very good & cheap and we had no stomach problems other than an expanding waste line. However we were in an unseasonal heat wave. The high ground scenery was amazing as good as the Alps & the Pyrenees.

Tuesday 5th June
Utilising a Thomsons flight from Manchester to Anatalya arriving 2200 local time picking up the pre-booked Budget hire car from the Domestic airport which is next to the International airport & checked into a local 4 star hotel !
Wednesday 6th June
Leaving the Inc hotel , Anatalya which is very close to the airport having paid £120 b&b for the three of us . Setting off from the tight knit coastal conurbation however there were many speed traps .After 30 miles we left the eastbound carriageway , heading N to Konya where the scenery changed to peaked mountains with heavily wooded stands of conifers. After the city of Koya we headed off east to Egril across the flat plains. Again , excellent roads. After Egril we stayed on the 330 for a while then took the D805 driving toward Nigde and after 10 miles heading off due east for Camardi. We had many birding stops for Black headed Bunting , Long legged buzzard 5 species of lark interspersed with Sousloks (superb little ground squirrels) the last road took us nearly 2 hours because of these birds with also 3 species of Wheatear. Arriving at Pension Savak at 1830 but went straight out to the Demirkazik gorge 8 km from the hostel. A wise move as we had memorable views of Golden eagle building a nest mobbed by 2 Lesser kestrel, 2 species of Chough and 40 Alpine swifts with accompanying Crag martins. Birding exercise of the day was the splitting of the 2 Rock nuthatch species, this was by the obvious size of eye-stripe and heaviness of bill. Evening meal at the hostel at Cukurbag Koyu was Trout after soup whilst listening to 2 distant Scops Owls.
Thursday 7th June
Early morning start at 4.00am and taken straight to the Demirkazik mountain base at 8000 feet with our brilliant guide , Bashar. The temperature was 6c at this time of day ,we had blue sky even though we were warned the trip may have been called off for bad weather . It took us 30 mins to drive there on the trailer attached to the back of tractor, well worth it, we work hard for luxuries in life. We got there pre 5.00 am and spent 3 1/2 hours looking, eventually getting 3 good views of the male Caspian Snowcocks singing a bit like curlew. 11 birds called constantly, other birds seen in the area were Red fronted Serin, Radde`s Accentor, Crimson winged & Snow finch , Wallcreeper ,1 Ibex,2 mountain goats. We then took a direct route down the mountain , hard on the knees, worth it for excellent views of Finsch`s wheatear, Horned lark & Water pipit. Eventually back at the base at 1045.
We had a superb local produce breakfast at 1100 at the pension.
After brunch we left with now high cloud, 20C to Piarbasi chromium mine but had to abandon the trip as road was too poor. We retraced back down the road to the base of mountain range finding 3 Isabelline wheatears as well as Serin, Long legged buzzard, Rock thrush. Then went to farmland to the north of Pinarbasi and had 2 Hobby attacking 60 Pallid swift as well as 3 singing Quail and Serin. After leaving the stream we went back to Demirkazik gorge where the pair of Golden eagles put on a good show with Rock bunting & Blue rock thrush with the birds of yesterday. On the way back dropped into base area of the morning jaunt where we found Lesser Whitethroat and Lanner falcon.
Back at 1910 having done 15hrs of birding ! and my Canon 7d stopped working!(£220 repair). Evening meal was a good chicken ratatouille after a great homemade soup.
Friday 8th June
Up at 0645 had a great breakfast cheese, tomato, cucumber and fried egg .out at 0645 towards Ammemedirt Urdu basically turn immediate 1st right after pension the down to junction after 400m turn right and drive for 8km after village then onto plains spectacular views of snow capped mountains to our left then turn into the wadi - look for the Rock on the right with a square door and park here. In the immediate area there were 6 White throated robins, Eastern Orphean Warbler , Chukar , Long legged buzzard, Rock bunting, Rock sparrow colony, Red backed shrike, Crag martin, 2 Red fronted Serin, Radde`s Accentor, 2 Crimson winged finch, with many Eastern lesser whitethroat, Cuckoo. After 3 hours of birding heaven we headed back to the pension seeing Tawny pipit on the plains arriving back at 1045.Bird activity quietened after 1000 with Golden oriole heard from the pension and Tree sparrow feeding in the car park, weather Blue sky 15c.
Left at 1145, for Birecik . The road to the south was being resurfaced and the going was slow for 20km but it didn`t matter the views of mountain scenery were spectacular. After 45 mins we reached the main road motorway running west- east this was partially a toll road and we had to buy a swipe card at the first toll they do not accept cash at the booths only the card. On the trip to Birecek we saw Short toed eagle , Cattle egret with White storks. We arrived in Birecik at 1700 the trip taking 5 hours. Weather Blue sky and temp 37c. We stayed at the motel Mirakem ( last hotel on the north side before crossing the Euphrates. £26 each for 3 nights with a/c). We crossed over the river into the town to get our bearings , after the bridge take the first right but beware of the one way system . Heading northwards to the castle market and beyond , where we saw Little swift on the cliffs to our right. We found the Ibis wadi, then turned round and back under bridge and parked next to the river (800m from under bridge to the south). next to the Gulhane`s cafe in wooded area on the east of dual carriageway . On entering the busy cafe amongst trees however the first tree on the left by the entrance in the car park , Jim found the Pallid Scops Owl. In the parkland further to the south the local kids pointed out roosting Long eared owl. We finished the birding day at 1950.
Saturday 9th June
Up at 0600 and went to the Bald ibis wadi which starts behind the garage next to the WWF Bald Ibis centre. This area was so good we eventually finished at 1030.We saw many Menetries Warbler and Roller. There were both species of Kestrel nesting. European bee-eater overhead .Many Eastern Olivaceous Warbler & Upchers . Mammal list was increased with a Fox .However really hot 43C . After seeing the Bald ibis colony and we were set up to visit to see the Desert birds in the evening by Mustaffa , the local expert who can be found in the shop. Then we went to the gravel pits behind our Motel and had a good birding session. Great reed , Marsh, Eastern Reed warbler s and Graceful prinia. More bee-eaters, Moorhen and Gull billed tern with Squacco herons occasionally over the reed beds. The heat got too bad leaving at 1200 and went to Birecik for a meal. Over the bridge again, came off to the right and went under bridge ,on the left in the row of shops we ate at` Ikinki bahar' ,what a meal ! we had a Ouzel (not the bird) a real mixture of kebabs and things a pile of salad and various breads all for a fiver ! a very clean place , good staff. We then went looking for the evening arid trip, basically got lost on the road Birecvik – Halfeti road but still found 4 Finsch`s wheaters, and our only Black kite of the trip. Back to Motel mid pm & went back to the gravel pits for a short bit of birding to find 5 Bee-eater s and managed to get close to Pygmy cormorant & Squaccos , I then found the old bee-eater colony.
Early evening we went back to Mustaffa to clarify the directions rearranging for the following night with Ahmet at his farm then back and watched European championships football in the room bed 2100, shattered.
Sunday 10th June
Set off at 0530 to go to Halfeti an amazing small village 16km away in a deep wide gorge of the Euphrates. Abundant Eastern rock nuthatch and my first See See on the crags overlooking the Euphrates. A Sombre tit made an appearance on thistle heads. Numerous Crested lark with Finsch`s wheatear and a passing Peregrine with a Lesser kestrel. Half way driving back, between New and Old Halfetti we explored the orchards .There were many Rufous bush chats but difficult to photo as well as Desert finch flying over (sounding like Bee eaters).4 White throated robin feeding young, a few Syrian woodpecker, 1 White spectacled bulbul and Black headed bunting. also quite a few Hoopoe. Back to Birecik for lunch, a superb lamb dish at our restaurant prior to that an unsuccessful trip to the local dam only Pygmy cormorants of note. We left the motel at 1600 for Yeniakpinar & Ahmet Dimar`s tractor ride up the mountain . Across the road to his farm they were drying corn which attracted Plain rock sparrow, Crested lark, Laughing dove with a superb Golden eagle soaring low overhead. From the farm ,having achieved military permission in this sensitive area ,we went up themountain . Seesee , Bimaculated and Short toed larks viewable from the back of the trailer on the way up .On the flat summit brilliant views of Desert Finch, Lesser short toed lark & 8 Cream coloured coursers. Black bellied sand grouse were eventually located on the ground and we found a nest of fledgling Short toed lark by our feet. On the descent many larks as well as Seesee and Roller. At the farm we were treated to Turkish coffee with our new Dutch friends met on the excursion. Back to the motel for 2030.The weather of the day was blue sky day 41C
Monday 11th June
We actually arose at 5.00 the wailing prayers from two competing Minorettes at 4.00 was our wake up call . Another 43C blue sky day set off for Durnalik a 40 min. drive away. Arriving readying ourselves for a slog up the hillside we had a pleasant surprise . A new road had been built for access to a distant quarry proving to be useful as we drove straight to the top of the wadi ,the best area .Soon we were watching a family of Red tailed wheatears being harassed by a Black eared wheatear. Many birds were feeding young on nests, Olive tree warbler ,White throated robins also other birds including Black headed bunting , Western rock nuthatch. Upchers , Eastern orphean, & Menetries warblers all very active and showed well. 4 Red-rumped swallows were hawking in the gorge itself . The Cinerous buntings were found at the top of the ridge out of the wadi overlooking the new road to the left opposite side of the new road. After 3 & half hours of really good birding we drove back to the wadi entrance and creek, where many birds were drinking . We saw a few Black headed buntings & Cinnerous female. Rufous bush chat, & Upchers warbler . In the surrounding orchard were 2 Syrian woodpeckers. On returning to the motel we then walked and viewed the orchards from the road bridge over the Euphrates seeing 4 Dead sea sparrows. Lunch was at our normal restaurant in Birecik. After a siesta , out at 1600 heading for the pools south of the town. Not a pleasant place as there was a dead cow there but plenty of new birds for the trip list. Glossy ibis more Dead sea sparrows, Black headed wagtail, Cettis warbler, Gull billed tern, Little plover, Ferruginous duck, Red crested Pochard. We then drove along the gravel road south by the widening river, finding Stone curlew, Great crested grebe and a brief view of a Blue cheeked bee-eater. Many European Rollers posed on the wires as well as a family of Hoopoes. We saw our first Common terns of the trip with a good range of Heron including Night. Certainly the scenery became more spectacular as we headed south toward the large hydro electric dam across the river surrounded by arable fields and wadis with Syria in the distance. Back at the motel at 1915 to try and see England on TV, we just got the highlights.
Tuesday 12th June
Early start to the gravel pits behind Mirkarem at 0530. We staked out the European beeater site as we watched them a pair of Iraq Babblers were squabbling with them. We then worked the area near the river with reedbeds getting good views of Dead sea sparrow, 4 Iraq babblers then a flock of 8 Lesser Pied kingfishers flew over. A Menetries warbler was showing at the same location. As we got back to the car at 1000 we watched a pair of Little Bitterns have a bit of a do. Then we tried the cemetery & saw many Dead sea sparrow as well as Rufous-tailed Chats on the grave stones. After birding breakfast was the order of the day , at the Sahra restaurant next to the motel. It was continental style, but good clean copious food & they even cleaned the car!.
We set off at 1130 for Tuscani which is next to the Goskii delta. We arrived and checked into the` Fatih ` hotel ,£10/ night each for a clean bed & decent shower. Later we were to have a superb mixed grill in a restaurant in the square. Prior to this we drove along the western side of the large reed fringed lagoon on the track through the low sand dunes. Many Crested lark, Spectacled bulbul, nesting Kentish plover, Marsh harrier,12 Spur winged plover, Graceful Prinia ,Purple heron & a few families of Ruddy Shelduck.
Wednesday 13th June
The hotel had a good view of the harbour as we set off early morning to the delta to have a more detailed search. The target bird was Black Francolin. It proved difficult but we eventually caught up with 4 individuals singing from promontories amongst the dense scrub. Other birds were similar to the previous nights session so we headed to the region to the north of delta having to head back to the village then east and taking a narrow road to the south travelling by a drainage canal .Birds evident were Great reed warbler, Reed warbler and close views of 4 Night heron with 1 Purple heron & Black headed wagtail as well as the obligatory Spur winged plovers.
Back to the motel at 1030 then setting off for the 5hr drive to Asleki. Leaving the heat and blue sky from the coast heading to the lower 5000 feet above sea level . We stopped off at a superb roadside restaurant at Kadrnmi. We had a very good mixed stew with cheeses but the speciality was Testin kebab, a Lamb stew in a pot which they broke by the table for 7 tl . Then off to the mountains and before we left the plains we got really good images of a Long legged buzzard by the dual carriageway. After checking into the Star hotel, Asleki for £12.00 b & b each we dropped off the bags and went straight out birding 33deg at 5000 feet .We used Gosney `s birdguide ( a must for a visit to the region) and went to the walled orchard .Which is out of the village to the main bypass road and turning right at the Toros hotel on the left after 1 km .There was a track that went over a new road being built to a 3 acre walled deciduous wood .Here we found Syrian woodpecker, Masked shrike with a family of Eastern Bonellis warbler. Black headed bunting & a Steppe buzzard made an appearance and a very friendly large tortoise.
After an hour we went to the “New site” from Gosney`s book. 15. 4km N from Askeki turning off left going north. A new junction at the top of the hill just past a fruit stall. Having turned left along the new road drive for 3.4km turn left again and drive to Y shaped clearing. We birded between 1800-1900 finding Krupers nuthatch joined briefly by a Western rock nuthatch but otherwise quiet barring another large tortoise.
Back to motel for a basic meal and to watch the Euro cup well looked after by the manager
Thursday 14th June
Left at 0600 and went straight to the `Old road` site. As you leave the village they have made a local rubbish tip, then past gypsies and then after 5 km, with the hollow on left & layby on the right on this badly worn road, then after parking, cross over the road by a rusty chevron sign a track leading west. Immediately we had 6 Krupers nuthatches and before we made it to the beautiful clearings Short toed tree creeper, Coal tit, Red crossbills, & Mistle Thrush. There was a distant calling picus woodpecker. After another 4 Krupers nuthatches and Goldcrest . 2.5 hrs had passed quickly in this aesthetic setting . On the way before the tip we stopped for a break to see 4 Cretzschmar's bunting with 2 male Ruppell`s warbler all responding well to tape. After 1100 we went back to the “New layby “ site again quiet but we had 4 Krupers nuthatches responding amazingly to the tape as well as another tortoise overhead a Long legged buzzard. Then we returned back for a short session at Aleski cemetery getting 2 Masked shrike, 3 Syrian woodpecker and a family of Redstarts. We left the hotel at 1515.heading to the airport we stopped off 50km short of the airport at 1645 for a break & heard many Corn bunting. Our Thomson flight was 2200 local time landing at Manchester at 0030 the following morning.
