This trip report is intended to let folks know what birds we encountered on a recent birding trip to Ecuador. Our trip was expertly guided by Edison Buenano, owner of Swordbilled Expeditions (www.swordbilledexpeditions.com). We had used Edison on a trip to southern Ecuador a few years ago and enjoyed his company and guiding expertise. He knows the birds of Ecuador very well and has excellent hearing and equipment. We were joined on the first week of the trip at Shiripuno by our friends Sharon Bostick and Frank Bills, from Knoxville, Tennessee, not far from where we live.

Since we have birded a few times in Ecuador and many times in South America, we were specifically looking for lifers available in Ecuador, and not trying to build a big list. Therefore you will notice about 75 species on the trip list at the end of this report that are heard only = (H). Most of the species we were targeting were "rare, localized, or very skulky", so we did not spend much time trying to call out and see other species that we encountered that were not new for us. The large list of species that we did encounter is a testament to Edison's great hearing and knowledge of Ecuadorian bird calls.

Our itinerary was put together by Edison after seeing what species we needed from a target list we sent to him. It started with a week at Shiripuno Lodge in the lowlands. Our guide there was a man named Jarol Fernando Vaca, who basically runs Shiripuno Lodge. He was excellent and knew the birds there very well. When we got back to Coca, Edison met us in his 2012 Toyota SUV, which we used for the rest of the trip. We first went to Wild Sumaco Lodge for 3 nights, then Cabanas San Isidro for 2 nights, then Guango Lodge for 1 night, then on to Septimo Lodge in Mindo for 1 night, before returning to Quito for a night before flying south for the final week of the trip. While we stayed in Quito for the night, Edison drove his vehicle down to Guayaquil, so we could use his car for that part of the trip as well. We flew to Guayaquil the following morning, where Edison picked us up and drove to Buenaventura Reserve, where we stayed for 2 nights at the Umbrellabird Lodge. After birding here we went to Jorupe Reserve, near Macara for 2 nights, staying at the fabulous Urraca Lodge. Then we went on to Tapichalaca Lodge in the Jocotoco Reserve for 2 more nights. The final stay was in Cuenca for 1 night, going up into the Cajas National Recreation Area the final morning, before flying back to Quito at 3 pm on November 11th. Except the last night in Cuenca, all the lodges we stayed at in the south were part of the Jocotoco Reserve network. They are all nicely constructed, comfortable, and well maintained with very efficient and friendly staff. I won't bother with the lodge details, as most, if not all, have their own websites with the appropriate information. The food throughout the entire trip was very good, typical for South America.

Shiripuno Lodge - Oct. 21-27.

This lodge is situated in the middle of a 1 million hectare forest, owned by native people. The lodge is basic, but the forest here is fantastic and holds some great birds, especially antbirds and their relatives. Deep forest birding in most places is a "feast or famine" thing. If you get lucky with mixed flocks or ant swarms, you have a great chance of seeing some fabulous birds. We were fairly lucky finding some of our target species, but mixed flocks were hard to come by and we never really found a proper ant swarm. Birds were hard to come by, but our guide Jarol worked hard for us to find what we did. The staff here did a great job feeding us and the rooms were comfortable. No hot water here, but with the humidity, a cool shower felt pretty good after being out on the trails all day.

Wild Sumaco Lodge & trails - Oct. 27-30.

Fabulous lodge and staff. The owners, Jim & Bonnie, were a real delight. The trail system here is typical of foothills habitat. Most of them were steep in parts and lots of up and down walking. The absence of many mixed flocks, a recurring theme on this trip, bothered us again here. We got about 9 lifers here, but dipped on 4-5 more.

Cabanas San Isidro & trails - Oct 30-Nov 1.

Few mixed flocks and rain hurt us here. While we did manage to find about 6 lifers, we probably missed 4-5 more species here because of rain and low flock activity. The Guacamayos Trail, which we have heard about for a long time as being a great birding trail, was disappointing. The habitat looked fabulous, with lush forest on a steep hillside and little human interference, but no mixed flocks to speak of and few individual birds. Researchers had located a nest of Greater Scythebill, one of our most wanted birds of the trip, and we thought we might finally actually get to see this rarity. It was also supposedly sitting on eggs. The nest tree was near the beginning of the Guacamayos trail and we waited for a couple of hours for the bird to show, but no luck. Rats! A good bonus at San Isidro was that there is a Black-banded Owl that hangs out near the parking lot of the lodge at dusk and we got a fabulous look at it. While at this lodge we made a couple of runs into the nearby town of Baeza, where there is a nice park/zoo on the east side of town. I think it was called Granja. It was supposed to be a good place for Black-chested Fruiteater.

Guango Lodge - Nov 1-2.

We met a birder at Shiripuno Lodge that told us that the Mountain Avocetbill hummingbird, that was supposed to be coming to feeders here, was not being seen, but within the first 20 minutes of looking, Edison heard it calling just outside the lodge and it came in to the feeders, where we got a great look at it. Then we went across the road to bird a really nice trail that produced a Dusky Piha for us. Edison tried for White-rimmed Brush-Finch along this trail, but not even a sniff.

Septimo Lodge in Mindo - Nov 2-3.

Great lodge in a very birdy valley outside Mindo. Our only morning here was spent at Angel Paz's refuge about 25 minutes from Mindo. Angel's place was great, as always. He's now feeding Giant, Moustached, and Ochre-breasted Antpittas, along with Dark-backed Wood-Quail, and Ocellated Tapaculo! Great looks at all of them. We tried for an Scaled Antpitta on a trail behind the Septimo Lodge. We managed to call it in to within 15 feet of us, calling all the time, but it would not come out from the dense foliage and we never saw it. Pretty frustrating.

Quito - Nov. 3. Overnight before flying to Guayaquil tomorrow.

Umbrellabird Lodge & Buenaventura Reserve area - Nov. 4-6.

Got to this area and went immediately to the Buenaventura Reserve, where Edison was finally able to spot some distant El Oro Parakeets in the top of a distant tree. The next morning, with the help of a local ranger named Artemio, we hacked our way up the side of a steep hillside to get a great look at the El Oro Tapaculo from about 8 feet away! I was the only one who got a very brief glimpse at a Rufous-fronted Wood-Quail as it flushed off the road by the lodge.

Urraca Lodge at the Jorupe Reserve - Nov. 6-8.

Target birds here, mostly for me, were Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner (yes) and Pale-browed Tinamou (coming into the feeding area near the lodge. A day trip up to the Utuana Reserve finally netted us a disappointingly brief look at the Jelski's Chat-Tyrant.

Tapichalaca Reserve - Nov. 8-10.

As always, a great reserve. The lodge here is called Casa Simpson. Managed to find Mouse-colored Thistletail, Bearded Guan, Black-headed Hemispingus, and Golden-plumed Parakeet our first full morning here, but after that, we had no luck finding any remaining target species. Mixed flocks continued their absence here as well. We then tried a high elevation (about 10,000 feet) public protected area, near the small community of Yangana, called Cerro Toledo, to try for Masked Mountain Tanager, Neblina Metaltail, and Red-faced Parrot. There is a lot of great looking habitat and no people to speak of here, but we found very few individual birds. We tried again the following morning at Cerro Toledo, and again had no luck, with the exception that we did actually hear the Red-faced Parrots, but could not locate them. Night in Cuenca.

Cajas National Recreation Area - Nov 11th.

We drove up here (12,500 feet) our final morning to look for the endemic Violet-throated Metaltail. Edison said he has photographed it here, about a mile past the park offices, right near the highway in amongst the Polylepis trees, but we had no luck finding it either. Lots of Blue-mantled Thornbills and a Giant Conebill, but no metaltail.

I have tried to be as accurate as possible with this checklist and report. It's likely I have made some mistakes. If so, they are my mistakes alone. I hope this report helps people with planning future trips to this fantastic country. We certainly plan to go back. The infrastructure is getting better all the time, the people are great, and the food is excellent. The birds are the icing on the cake!
