Introduction & Account by Brian Clasper

The trip was organised primarlily to see the endangered Spoon billed sandpiper and other wader specialities with a relaxed Birdphotography element. Certainly the more well known organised companies were out of our price range, so we contacted Birdingpal Tours via their web site ( www.birdingpaltours.com), and in particular the Wild Bird Eco group ( www.wildbirdeco.net ) The tailor made break was ideal for us and was a remarkable price considering it included Full board, Large Air conditioned bus for 3 !,2 very good guides,Pang & Tui, who looked after us 24/7. The best deal we got for flights from Manchester /Doha/Bangkok on Qatar airways was with Travelsupermarket.com. The weather was 38c on the coast and on average 28c inland. We had 2 major showers in the time we were there. Mosquitoes were few and far between but leech socks were a necessity at Khao Yai especially more so for the ticks and the diseases that they carry. Everybody was wearing them!

14/02/13 Thursday

Arriving at 0700 at Bangkok airport via Qatar from Manchester (2 x 7hr flights with a 2hr change at Doha)34c, hazy sun/ smog all day and fairly humid. We departed east from the airport on a very good motorway system.

Unfortunately the 12 seater bus we were in broke down after an hour. The initial part of the trip we saw plenty of Openbills, Common Mynahs and Zebra dove. We awaited our replacement bus at a service area having a descent snack and still finding Brown Shrike, Yellow vented bulbul, House swift, Gemain`s swiftlet & Palm swift.

With our new air conditioned bus we set off to our first destination Wat Chong Lam gardens. A public area with a temple supporting an internal breeding colony of Germain`s swiftlets as well as Oriental magpie robin & White vented mynah. This was a good location on the river for Collared kingfisher with Black naped tern, Common tern & Whiskered tern. The small river restaurant to the west of the Catholic church was amazing. Superb meals & unbelievable value. From here we then set off to the Mangrove research centre at Lam Pak Bia, walks around the woodland and down to the coast (unfortunately low tide). There were Green billed malkouha, Golden-bellied Gerygones, Pied fantail, Whiteye, Fulvous breasted woodpecker and distant views of many species of egrets and waders. We had superb views of Black capped kingfishers. We then went to a Petchaburi temple with dry rice fields. Finding a flock of 12 Oriental pratincole, a few singing Oriental skylark, Long billed plover, Long toed stint & Paddyfield pipit. The day finished at Petchaburi lagoons with a 1000+ Brown headed gulls , also Drongos & Beeaters coming into roost with a few hundred Variable flying foxes leaving their day time roost. We also had good numbers of White-vented & Pied Mynahs, and White-shouldered Starlings.

Evening, we stayed at the Diamond Hotel, Petchaburi. A very reasonable hotel , an excellent standard for the price. We slept well considering we hadn’t slept for 2 nights

15/02/13 Friday

From the hotel it was a 25 minute drive to Pak Thale, an iconic mecca for birders. We got there early but beaten to the first views of the birds on the saltpans by 2 other groups. It didn’t matter as everybody admired the splendour of 3 Spoon billed sandpipers. On the lagoons it was pleasure to leisurely view through large flocks of waders most soon to be heading north to breed. Lesser & Greater Sand plovers, many Red necked stints, Great knot,Eastern curlew. With Whiskered, Little, & Common terns. There were lone Sharp tailed sandpiper and Red necked phalarope. We travelled further west amongst the labyrinth of saltpans to yet more waders this time a different variety of Godwits , Asiatic Dowithcers,40 Nordmann`s greenshank with Common greenshank, Pacific plover and Reef heron .After another superb beach meal on a deserted beach we then set off sw for Kaeng Krachan reception area a 1.5 hr drive away in a lake setting. Here we had Lineated & Coppersmith barbet (at the nest hole) Black-crested & Streak-eared bulbul were evident, with single Asian Brown & Taiga flycatchers. Further exploration yielded Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Ashy Woodswallows, and Banded Bay Cuckoo. We left birding to a tight schedule to continue onto our accommodation for the next 3 nights Samarn Bird Camp. Tui, the resident expert , joined us for the rest of the holiday .A hide was set up behind our bungalow where we started to adapt to flash photography practicing on Siberian Blue robin & Abbots babbler. After evening meal we had a stroll in the dark by the road lamped Long-tailed and Indian Nightjar.

16/02/13 Saturday

The morning session consisted of getting to the local `Bird pool` hide pre 7.00am. This consisted of 2 tiny pools on the edge of the forest with a very comfortable hide with plenty of space. The potential was immense. There were good numbers of both species of Necklaced Laughingthrushes, with Black-crested, Streak-eared & Stripe-throated bulbuls all feeding actively in the baited surround. We were lucky to have a pair of surprisingly long legged Siberian Blue Robins, which were quite settled. Tickell's Blue, Black-naped Monarch & Taiga flycatchers also bathed in the pools with a Slaty-legged Crake a shy individual at the back of the viewing area. Mammals noted were Plantain & Black tipped Squirrel, and Treeshrew. Back to Samarn Bird Camp where there were good opportunities to photograph Olive backed sunbird on nest and a Sooty headed bulbul. The afternoon was another hide session in a different location deeper into the forest with small hides small pool and area baited by the local villagers who rent out the facilities a superb way to preserve the local area. The mammals were similar with the addition of Mouse deer ,the smallest in the world. Bird numbers were less than the morning but similar species in addition Silver Pheasant, of the nominate race. Normally they stay for a short period but this timid individual put on an amazing display twice with mouse deer and Jungle fowl in attendance. Green-legged Partridges drifted through as well as Large Scimitar Babblers and Racket-tailed Treepie, a group bathing in the pool .The light was not brilliant and flash was essential for decent results which did not disturb the animals.

17/02/13 Sunday

Today we used an adapted pick up as the roads were slightly more rough and it gave a more open view of the terrain on the forest trails of Kaeng Krachan park. Soon after entering the park we had Hill Myna and in the distance an Indian elephant appeared on the road in the distance. We set off after the individual getting very close view of the family before they disappeared noisily into the forest. An exciting lucky experience as at one stage the male in musk took exception to us being there.

Wedge-tailed & White-vented Green Pigeons, Black-naped Orioles, Great Hornbill Heart-spotted Woodpecker were all found as we travelled to a Brown Hornbill nest hole. Tremendous views of the adults feeding the youngsters coughing up red fruit balls with the background sound of a troop of calling gibbons (the sound like the BBC `Clangers`) A White-fronted Scops Owl roost was next on the agenda a few 100m down the road .It was great to see local people quietly showing there children the stationery duo.

Heading back to the main centre in the forest for lunch we drove through a ford and were confronted by 100`s of Butterflies of varying species feeding on the salts on the muddy stream banks. It was like being part of a Disney film, the memories will never be forgotten, a dream. Just before the centre I located a Blue bearded beeater the only of the trip. Dusky Leaf Monkeys entertained us as well as a tame wild White handed Gibbon while we ate. We then toured the forest and eventually were lucky to find a Long-tailed Broadbill nest hanging over the road. Rain then intervened. As it brightened the day finished with a trip to a high closed restaurant with spectacular views of the forest. Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Dark-sided Flycatcher, with Ashy, Short-billed & Scarlet & Swinhoe's Minivets, Indochinese Cuckooshrike, Moustached & Blue throated Barbet with a flock of Wreathed Hornbills. On the fast drive back to exit the reserve we amazed at the number of Beeaters & Drongos going to roost

18/02/13 Monday

After breakfast at the bird camp we had a wander around its entrance to the camp where thre was a few ponds and scrubland. This proved to be most productive with stunning Yellow bittern and Bronze winged jacana. Amongst the Asian pied starling flock were 6 Vinerous starlings. Both Blue winged and Golden fronted leafbirds watching a family of bickering Black naped orioles. We nearly overlooked a pair of Plain backed sparrows before we said our goodbyes to the camp.

The 5 hour drive, was broken by stopping off at paddyfields on the NW outskirts. Coming off the motorway we managed to top the bus under a bridge via a shortcut. It was worthy it though for a dense group of Eastern Cattle egret in full summer plumage with Little and intermediate egrets. There was a good population of the commoner birds in the area but on other fields we had a pair of Painted snipe with a large number of Black winged stilts. A dozen Pygmy geese, Black eared kite, Oriental pratincole and Pheasant tailed jacana and a photogenic Blue-tailed Bee eater. As we arrived at Khao Yai accommodation widely distributed large chalets we watched a pair of Asian Pied Hornbills. However the Red muntjac & Samba deer were remarkably tame as were the Red jungle fowl & Malayan porcupine at dusk. Nice way to finish the day.

19/02/13 Tuesday

Sunrise was at the the local Thai Air force Radar unit at the top of one of the nearby hills in the forest. The reason was as well as a splendid view over the canopy once the mist had gone, but also there are numerous fluorescent lights which attracted many large colourful moths including Atlas moths. As well as attracting birders the birds regard this as a feast with Black-throated Laughing thrushes with Ashy Drongos ,Black-crested Bulbuls .One of the most tame and photogenic birds were a few Dusky & Raddes warblers, Oriental White-eyes, Grey-backed Shrike, Rufous-fronted Babblers, and Black-throated Sunbird were all noted in the local vicinty. We looked down onto Asian Fairy Bluebird, Yellow-browed & Arctic Warbler, Blue-winged Leafbird, from the viewpoint next to a small tourist kiosk manned by the military! Other poses in good light were Mountain Imperial Pigeon and a Barred Cuckoo Dove. Back at the main centre amongst log cabins was a baited White-throated Rock Thrush site. Mugimaki Flycatcher gorged itself on our mealworms but the Rock Thrush turned up an hour later. While we were photographing these were distracted by a troop of Gibbons noisily passing by we followed these and had good views of Dark sided and Asian brown Flycatchers. In my haste after leaving the area I left my favourite hat behind, Tui told me it would be there next day. Sure enough the locals had kept it for me. The Thai`s we met are honest kind people.

At lunch we met at British birder at the centre who kindly told us about a Orange brested trogon nest lowdown by the track. So off we set from the car park on a trail .This session was a quiet one .Jim managed to see the bird fly off the nest but we staked it out for a while but soon packed in for ethical reasons on the way back on the trail we had Great Hornbill, White-crested Laughing thrushes and Grey-eyed Bulbul.

The rest of the afternoon was spent looking for Siamese fireback pheasants but with no luck however we did come across an Elephant and a Long haired guide in a jeep who fancied himself as Tarzan. Coming back from our evening meal, we found a foraging Small Indian Civet and of course our friend the Malayan Porcupine was back at the bungalow

20/02/13 Wednesday

We spent the first session of over 2 hours in hides trying to photograph Blue Pitta in a regular baited area behind a toilet block in the camping grounds .Unfortunately possibly due to noisy campers our efforts were in vain but we did manage to see Red jungle fowl and a pair of Siberian Blue robins.

After stretching at end of our session we left the the hides & we were shown why Asian palm swifts are named so. They nest on the fronds of palm trees. The guides had found the nest of an Asian Palm Swift, built impossibly precariously in the bent frond of a palm tree. We also had a Crested serpent eagle and Blue rock thrush. Next on our agenda was the Orchid waterfall trail, which left the corner of the car park proximal to a wide stream. We stumled our way along this scenic walk seeing a timid Blue eared kingfisher, Great Iora and a few sunning Water monitors. We didn’t go as far as the waterfall but saw a stunning Slaty backed forktail as well as a stunning Red headed trogon. On our return a Mountain Hawk-eagle showed circling over us, as well as another Blue eared kingfisher. After watching some Macques toy with some naive motorcyclists & pick up truck drivers at a viewpoint, fancy leaving food in the back of an open pick up...the rains then came.

After the long thunderstorm which caused a loss of power due to a fallen tree, we went out for the end of the day to the grasslands. Finding both Greater and Lesser coucals. With Ashy wood swallows on the wires Imperial mountain pigeons flying over, Verditer Flycatcher & Red-whiskered Bulbuls.

On returning to our bungalow we came across a tree across the road , had a fallen tree causing the power failure was due to a panicking elephant? Certainly they had caused a lot of recent damage in the forest. We had a candlelit meal at the local cafe but back at the housing, power on, we had a surreal experience while watching 2 porcupines from our balcony, in the valley below at the centre there was a music concert performed after a Wildlife warden conference.

22/02/13 Thursday

After many attempts looking for Siamese firebacks we set off from the Bungalow on the forest road close to us at first light with the mists clearing we finally caught up with 3 groups feeding on and beside the road. We then walked the road finding a few species including Common Green Magpie, Fairy Bluebirds & Moustached Barbet Back at the grasslands we found Burmese shrike Golden-headed cisticola, Siberian Stonechat, Lesser Coucal, Black-naped Oriole and Mountain Imperial Pigeons. As we climbed back into the minibus for what we thought was our last birding session we were driven to an open area next to lodges by a lake where there were 2 sandbanks. Our 2 guides hadn’t told us that we were to sit in our 2 portable hides photographing a Chestnut headed bee eater colony .We also had very close Richards pipits and Flameback with noisy Wreathed hornbills flying overhead while being watched by a Samba and Red muntjac.

At midday we dashed back to the bungalow to pack then to the centre for another brilliant Thai meal whilst eating a pair of Asian Emerald Cuckoos were found in the canopy across the river and a Two barred greenish warbler looked for food at eye level where we sat a great end to the day cocluding on a 3.5 hr drive back to the airport and home.
