First I’d like to say I was very privileged to be able to spend 17 days with Chege wa Kariuki from Birding Watching East Africa. He is an extremely talented and knowledgeable guide who made my trip concern free and amazingly productive.
I had originally arranged to tour with Exotic Birding Tours on their November 2013 Kenya tour. In June, Exotic Birding Tours called me and told me they had to cancel the trip through lack of participation. I asked if there was any way that the Kenyan guide planned for the trip would be willing to take me individually and fortunately Chege was kind enough to do that.
The tour started on 19 Nov at 6:15 in the morning Chege arrived promptly and we went to Nairobi National Park. There was some concern as it was raining when we left the hotel, but shortly after arriving at the park, the rain stopped. It was a fantastic introduction to Kenyan birding, 135 species of birds and 21 species of animals seen over the next 11 hours. From the first sighting of a Long-Crested Eagle sitting prominently over the road to the quick glimpse of the African Rail, and an island full of Yellow-billed Storks, the day was a wonderful start. A Little Bee-eater was napping on the road and we at first thought it had been injured. Chege picked it up and it woke up and squawked. After letting me get a good look and a picture, Chege let it go out the roof of the car. The long distance view of lions was a great bonus. We saw Black-bellied, White-bellied and Hartlaub’s Bustards in the park.
The next day we birded the road to Olorgesailie, for lower elevation birds. An early start of 6:00 am got a good start on the road. The day included searching for Short-toed and Foxy Lark in fields along the road, calling in Tiny and Wailing Cisticola. Red-and-yellow Barbets were common along the road along with both Rufous Crowned and Lilac Breasted Rollers. A quick stop at a water hole near a small village gave us good views of a variety of birds drinking from a puddle including a large flock of Red-billed Quelea. By noon the temperature was quite high but we still got 58 new species.
On 21 November I checked out of the hotel in Nairobi at 5:30 am and we drove to Gatamiyu Forest. This is a beautiful highland forest. An early start yielded a Long-tailed Widowbird in breeding plumage along the road and got us to the forest in time to see two Scaly Francolin walking along the path. Forest highlights included a Moustached Tinkerbird, good sightings of the Yellow-whiskered Greenbul. Numerous calls for the Hartlaub’s Turaco finally brought one close enough to view, as well as a Bar-tailed Trogon. A quick glimpse of a Lemon Dove in the forest was exciting. And Black-and-white Colobus Monkeys were fun to watch. After spending the morning in the forest we ate our lunch at the lodge were the Chestnut-throated Apalis we had been searching for all morning showed up in the tree over our heads. We saw 36 species in the forest.
After lunch we drove to Lake Naivasha, getting there around 4:00 pm. Driving up to the lake, we came upon a flock of Black-lored Babbliers. Chege had arranged for us to take an hour boat ride along the edge of the lake where we saw Great and Long-tailed Cormorants, Pied and Great Kingfisher, Black Herons performing their “tenting” routines, African Jacana, Pink-backed and Great White Pelicans, and scads of ducks. This was also my first look at flamingos. The ride also included some close views of hippos lounging in the water. We saw 30 species at the lake. I then checked into the Elsemere Center for two lovely nights. This is a lodge right on the lake where hippos and buffalo graze on the lawns at night.
On 22 November we started at 5:00 am and drove the mountain road to the entrance to the Aberdare Preserve. This is a beautiful road with forests of bamboo on the steep slopes. There was a lot of evidence of elephants on the road, but no sightings. The early start also gave us several sightings of Jackson’s Francolin along the road. The morning was spent looking for high elevation forest birds like the Cinnamon-bracken Warbler, Evergreen-forest Warbler and Mountain-yellow Warbler. The beautiful Golden-winged Sunbirds were a delight along the road. We saw 22 unique species along this road. We arrived back at Elsemere Center for a late lunch. After a short rest, we drove over to a small lake that typically has many many flamingos, but the rise in water level of Lake Naivasha had also affected this lake and flooded out much of the flamingo feeding areas.
On 23 November we started at 4:00 am and drove to the Molo region to look for Abedare Cisticola and Wing-snapping Cisticola, both of which we saw as well as the Sharpe’s Longclaw. This was also my first look at Gray Crowned Cranes. I made a mistake here and took a picture of local children with my ipad and showed it to them. Around 10 to 15 of them then followed us around, shouting for me to take more pictures of them. It ruined our attempts to try and see a Lesser Jacana, but we still saw 22 species in this region. We then drove to Lake Nakuru Preserve after lunch.
Lake Nakuru is another beautiful park full of birds and animals. We drove around the park in the afternoon and saw Hildebrant’s Francolin, Coqui Francolin, a mother African Black Duck with babies. I stayed at the Lake Nakuru lodge that night which is a very fancy lodge in the middle of the preserve. A Bat Hawk flew past my room several times that evening.
The next morning, Chege, who stayed off the preserve, was not able to the lodge until 7:00 am, which was the latest start we had for the entire trip. All morning was spent in the preserve. We saw a family of Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls, European Bee-eaters and European Hoopoes, Green Tree-Hoopoes, and a beautiful Klass’s Cuckoo. A Collared Pratincole was a nice surprise. The day was also exciting because we came across a fairly fresh kill and the two large male lions and female lion who had made the kill. Later that day we were able to watch two lionesses and 4 half-grown lion clubs climb a tree.
In the afternoon we drove to Lake Baringo and spent some time birding along the edge of the lake. The water level at Lake Baringo has also risen greatly in the last three years, flooding out many of the lodges and much of the reed habitat along the edge of the lake. We saw a beautiful African Pygmy Kingfisher. As Chege was making the call of the Pearl-spotted Owlet to entice in some birds, the Owlet itself responded and we eventually found it being mobbed by sunbirds. We spent the next two nights at the SOI Safari Lodge.
On 25 November we got a 5:45 am start along the road to Karpedo. This is a desert region but yielded 22 species, including the beautiful Pygmy Falcons. A search in Karpedo eventually yielded Somali Sparrows. A stop at a rocky field brought us Crest Lark, and Singing Bush Lark. Chege made an amazing sighting of a Fox Kestrel a long distance away on the slope of the distant hill. After driving back to Lake Baringo, we picked up a local guide who showed us some difficult to find species like the Three-banded Courser, a Slender-tailed Nightjar, a Northern White-faced Owl and Spotted Eagle-Owl.
The next day we birded early along the cliff, then met up with the local guide for a few more difficult to find birds like the Spotted Thick-knee, and Black-headed Lapwing. We then took a boat ride around the lake, finding mostly Bee-eaters including the beautiful Northern Carmine Bee-eater. We saw 57 new species at the Lake Baringo.
After a morning at Lake Baringo, we drove to Kitale, stopping along the road to find a few more birds.
On 27 November we met up with a local guide around Kitale and birded along the length of the Kongelai Escarpment to near the Uganda border. We made numerous stops looking for the Yellow-billed Shrike and finally found it at the bottom of the escarpment just as we were ready to give up. This location brought us both White-crested Turaco and Ross’s Turaco as well as Eastern Plantain Eaters.
The next morning we met with the local guide again and did some more birding along the upper part of the escarpment including a marshy area. At the marsh, the Red-chested Flufftails were calling, and after playing their calls several times, he lured them out for a brief glimpse. For both days we had 41 new species of birds in this area.
That afternoon we drove to Kakamega forest, arriving just at dusk and in time to find a handful of birds at the forest edge. We spent 3 nights at the beautiful Rondo Center lodge in Kakamega forest.
November 29 we spent birding around the lodge in Kakamega forest. The normal afternoon rains didn’t occur while we were in Kakamega forest so the birding was quite slow in the afternoon. But what a wonderful place when you can give directions such as “The Great Blue Turaco is just to the left of the black-and-white monkey”. We got brief glimpses of the Black-billed Turaco flying, many sightings of the Black-and-white Casqued Hornbills, many different Greenbuls, brief looks at the White-spotted Flufftail, and several Puffbacks and Barbets. We spent 30 November birding in the Kakamega forest looking for Blue-shouldered Robin-chat and other skulking forest birds. In all we saw 73 new species at Kakamega.
We left Kakamega early on 1 December. We heard a Red-chested Owlet calling and made an attempt to see it, but crawling around in the dark jungle with army ants turned out to be too much for me. We then drove to the Busai Grasslands. This area is mainly sugar cane fields. I caught sight of 2 flying Piapiacs as we drove. A stop at a river for breakfast yielded a Rock Pratincole and Lesser Striped Swallows. On a walk through along a stream, Chege spotted a Superb Sunbird. Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me to document it. Chege went back to the area with the camera while I attempted to rest in the shade, but he was unable to refind it. We had 28 new species in this area. After spending much of the day in this location we drove to Kisimu for the night.
On 2 December we spent the morning birding around Lake Victoria in Kisimu. We found Papyrus Gonolek, Water Thick-knees, an immature Madagascar Pond-Heron. In the afternoon we drove to the west side of the Maasai Mara Preserve, arriving at Mara West Camp Lodge just about dusk. Mara West is a lovely tented camp on the escarpment overlooking Mara.
The next morning we started birding around the camp at 6:30 am. Stopped for breakfast then birded down the escarpment. This morning I saw my first Southern Ground-hornbill, and a Schalow’s Turaco, completing the turaco sightings of all possible turacos for this trip. After lunch back at the lodge, we drove into Mara itself. It’s hardly fair. After a long trip, when you are just starting to think about going home you come to Mara and fall in love with Kenya again. Mara is just amazing, animals everywhere, it’s hard to concentrate on looking for birds. I saw my first elephants there, thousands of zebras and wildebeest and Topi.
On 4 December we birded across Mara finding Lappet-faced and Ruppell’s Vulture, more Cisticola, Rosy-throated Longclaw, the only population of Rufous-tailed Weavers in Kenya. We also had a beautiful long view of a Serval Cat and spent some time watching wildebeast and zebra cross the Mara river. We spent that night at Sentrim Mara tented camp on the east side of Mara.
On 5 December, the last day in Kenya, we spent much of the morning in Mara looking for Temmick’s courser and Yellow-throated Sandgrouse. We watched vultures squabbling at a kill, and found a spotted hyena. Around noon we started the long drive back to Nairobi, stopping at a village on the way for Swahili sparrows, finding African Penduline-tits as well. At the last possible location to find a Kori Buzzard on the road back to Nairobi, I spotted one that lingered just long enough for us to pull off the road and admire it before it flew off. Just at dusk we stopped at Manguo Ponds and Chege found some female Maccoa Ducks and a Little Rush Warbler at another small pond. At that point we both put away our binoculars and declare the tour complete. In all we saw 631 species of birds and I got 573 lifers!
