Introduction
Journeyed to the Philippines with four friends after eight months of planning. We visited Palawan, Bohol, Cebu and central Luzon. We spent 22 days birding with three different guides in February 2014. We observed 260 species. Hope these notes offer the reader some useful suggestions.
Logistics
We flew from Sydney Australia to Manila with QANTAS. Internal flights were with PAL Express. All flights were on time and everything went smoothly. I booked day with three guides from recommendations I found on Facebook. They all provided comprehensive quotes including guiding, vehicle and accommodation. We chose not to go with a commercial company, simply because we wanted to do our own thing and relax a while at each location we visited. To go birding in the Philippines, you need a guide. A lot of natural places require advanced booking and some places we went can only be accessed using a guide with local knowledge. In the end, it all worked quiet well with no hiccups and we all enjoyed the natural beauty that Philippines has to offer.

Daily highlights:
Taxonomy follows the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP) which is based on IOC.
Day 1. Arrived in Manila at 6pm and transferred to Fersals Hotel, Quezon (basic but comfortable). No birding.
Day 2. Pick up by Rey and driver Rocky in a big van and off to La Mesa EcoPark via a short breakfast stop. Started walking just after dawn with some great birds including Spotted Wood Kingfisher, Red-bellied Pitta, Hooded Pitta, White-eared Brown-Dove, Bared Rail, Ashy Thrush, Striated Grassbird, Philippine Tailorbird, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Mangrove Blue Flycatcher and Lowland White-eye. Next was University of Philippines Dillman where we added Philippine Nightjar, White-browed Crake, Glossy Swiftlet, Pygmy Swiftlet, Philippine Woodpecker, Chestnut Munia and White-browed Crake. Late transfer to Mt. Makiling south of Manila where we stayed at TREES Hotel (basic but comfortable). Not a bad start to the trip.
Day 3. Up before dawn and off to the Botanical Garden in search of a fruiting tree. A beautiful location and some good birding; Purple-throated Sunbird, Buzzing Flowerpecker, Balicassiao, Striped-headed Rhabdornis, Philippine Bulbul, Grey-streaked Flycatcher and Red-crested Malkoha. After lunch walked up the Mt Makiling track which commences next to the hotel. Unlike my previous trip to this location it was very quiet. We added Philippine Serpent Eagle and Flaming Sunbird. In the evening we called in a pair of Philippine Scops-Owl, but they frustratingly kept behind leaves and would not show themselves.
Day 4. Went halfway up Mt Makiling on the back of several local motorbikes that we hired, then walked to the upper camp. Again it was very quiet though we did see another Spotted Wood Kingfisher, Scale-feathered Malkoha, Ashy Minivet. Late flight to Puerto Princesa (PP) on the long island of Palawan and transfer to Rodolfo Royal Hotel. (very nice).
Day 5. Out with Rommel for the day visiting a few locations not far from PP. First up was a site for the uncommon Palawan Flycatcher, which we had within 10 minutes. Then a Palawan Blue Flycatcher attracted our attention. It was good birding for the next few hours and we added the island subspecies of Crested Serpent Eagle, Green Imperial Pigeon, Palawan Flowerpecker, Palawan Tit, Palawan Bulbul, Sulphur-bellied Bulbul, Rufous-tailed Tailorbird, Ashy-headed Babbler and the rare Red-vented Cockatoo. After lunch we also successfully searched for the Melodeous Babbler. A late afternoon walk along Zigzag Rd added Yellow-throated Leafbird, Asian Fairy-Bluebird, Plain-throated and Copper-throated Sunbird, Pygmy Flowerpecker, Ashy Drongo, Blue-naped Parrot and Spot-throated Flameback.
Day 6. Up before dawn and off to more locations near PP. We found many of the same exciting species as yesterday and added Stork-billed Kingfish, Blue Paradise Flycatcher, Zappy's Flycatcher, Ashy-headed Bulbul, Hill Myna Purple-throated and Olive-backed Sunbirds. After lunch we went on a short banka (trimaran) ride to Cowrie Island. Here we found a high tide shorebird roost which included Lesser Sand, Kentish and Malaysian Plover, Common, Terek and Green Sandpipers, Grey-tailed Tattler and Eurasian Curlew. But the highlight came late in the afternoon, when the island guide found a roosting Mantanani Scops Owl amongst the mangroves. It was well hidden, and we all had to take turns climbing over elevated mangrove roots to get a look. In the evening we went looking, but failed to find Spotted Wood Owl
Day 7. Off to the beautiful village of Sabang on the mid west coast of Palawan; this would be our base for the next 3 nights at a Pension (basic but comfortable). Along the way we stopped at several spots and found Asian Drongo-Cuckoo, Palawan Tit, Black-chinned Fruit-Dove, Amaline Swiftlet, Black-throated Oriole, Sulphur-bellied Bulbul and Palawan Hornbill. After lunch we went to a property south of Sabang. Here we waited for but didn't see the uncommon Blue-headed Racquet-tail and White-bellied Woodpecker. A pair of Great Slaty Woodpeckers gave a brief fly over. After sunset, we found a Palawan Frogmouth, very exciting.
Day 8. Up before dawn and off to the Underground River National Park via a 20 minute banka ride. A pair of Eastern Reef Egrets joined us on the beach. Once at park headquarters, we looked for and found a spectacular male Palawan Peacock Pheasant which gave a good show. We also found a pair of Tabon Scrubfowl. At the entrance to the Underground River, which runs through limestone karst, were many Palawan Swiftlets. The several kilometre canoe river into the river cave is something that everyone should do, its fantastic. Later we walked around the jungle trails finding Mangrove Blue Flycatcher, Lovely Sunbird and Hooded Pitta. After lunch we went back to the private property to look for and found a number of Blue-headed Racquet-tails – stunning. We also added Oriental Dollarbird, Asian Glossy Starling, Green Imperial Pigeon, Red-headed Flameback and stunning prolonged views of three Great Slaty Woodpeckers displaying to each other. On the way back to town we stopped at a trail and walked into the forest for ten minutes. Here we looked for and found and photographed Palawan Scops-owl – excellent.
Day 9. Spent the day at several locations looking for species we had failed to find in the Sabang area. Highlights included Cinnamon Bittern, Osprey, Red-vented Cockatoo, more Blue-headed Racquet-tails, Amaline Swiftlet, Ashy-headed Babbler, White-vented Shama and Pale Spiderhunter.
Day 10. Morning around Sabang where we walked a kilometre or so into the forest near town and at a small stream we found a Malaysian Night Heron, also Ashy-headed and Melodious Babbler, Asian Fairy-Bluebird, Thick-billed Green-Pigeon and Spot-throated Flameback. Then all too soon we were on a our way back to PP where we again stayed at the Rodolfo Royale Hotel.
Day 11. Up early and off to Irawan Reserve where we wandered around riverine forest until lunch time. One of the first birds we saw was a Spotted Wood Owl, this was followed by Striped Tit-Bablber, White-vented Shama, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Blue Paradise-Flycatcher, Lovely Sunbird and a Palawan Flowerpecker. Back to town for lunch, then a mid-afternoon flight to Cebu. Arriving about 5.30pm, we went to our Hotel with guide Nilo and he briefed us about the early start in the morning.
Day 12. Up at 4am and off we drive for Tambuan forest. After an hours drive from our hotel we started walking with local guides along a track in the dark. We had hoped to get to a site for the Hawk-Owl, but it was already day-break when we got there and no owl. We head onward along a slippery trail. Its quiet, the typhoon has caused a lot of damage and the birds have disappeared says our local guides. Just swiftlets to keep us amused. Then Philippine Bulbul and Balicassiao arrive, followed by a pair of Elegant Tit. We trudge on up the hill and finally climb up to a rocky outlook. Here we will stay for several hours waiting to see if the Cebu Flowerpecker will come. Birds we few and and far between, though we did manage to see Magnificent Sunbird and Philippine Leaf-warbler. A Red-keeled Flowerpecker came to the tree, but not the sort after Cebu Flowerpecker. We descended from out viewpoint and entered some nice forest. Here we found Black Shama (Cebu endemic), Everett's White-eye and Mangrove Blue Flycatcher. A long day.
Day 13. Up early and off to the wharf where we caught the fast ferry to Bohol. We arrived mid morning and were greeted by our driver Ariel. A great little coffee shop in town fuelled us for exploration and we then drove for a an hour to our hotel, Habitat Bohol at Bilar. A fantastic place to stay and close to the national park and other good birding areas. After dropping our bags, we headed for the Chocholate Hills. It was drizzling, but we added Asian Glossy Starling, Pygmy Swiftlet Pacific Swallow, Barn Swallow and Striated Swallow. Back to small river near our hotel and we found Silvery Kingfisher and Coleto. We then drove to a grove of flowering banana trees where we added Purple-throated, Bohol and Handsome Sunbirds. At night we found and Everett's Scops-Owl near our bungalows.
Day 14. Up early and off to the national park with guide Ryan. It was very quiet along the trails. We only got a glimpse of the Yellow-breasted Tailorbird. We did manage good views of Samar Hornbill Philippine Fairy-Bluebird, and Bar-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, but it was a slow day. In the late afternoon we went back to Silvery Kingfisher site and got some good pictures, then to the banana grove where we added Orange-bellied Flowerpecker. Spotlighting at night we heard the Hawk-Owl and Frogmouth, but neither would show. Good views of Great-eared Nightjar.
Day 15. Another slow day. We went to the national park again and started walking around some different trails, eventually reaching the Pitta trail. No Steer's Pitta to be found anywhere and very few birds about at all. Did mange brief views of an Amethyst Brown-Dove and Philippine Magpie-Robin, then reasonable views of Black-faced Coucal, Blue Fantail and Yellow-bellied Whistler. In late afternoon we found Bohol Sunbird in the banana grove.
Day 16. We stopped at a seaside site on the way to the airport. Here we found a few shorebirds including Grey-tailed Tattler and Ruddy Turnstone, Gull-billed Tern and Chestnut Munia. Flew out of Bohol and arrived in Manila after lunch where we were met once again by Rey. We loaded our gear into the van and headed for Bangkong Khao Valley, about 2hrs drive south of Manila, where we stayed in a private lodge for two nights. This is an elevated site and we looked forward to adding new species. A late afternoon wander around the grounds and wee added Philippine Cuckoo-Dove, Colassi, Scale-feathered Malkoha, Purple Needletail, Philippine Swiftlet, Elegant Tit, Blue-headed Fantail, Buzzing Flowerpecker, Yellowish White-eye and the beautiful Sulphur-billed Nuthatch.
Day 17. Walked up the mountain track to 1500m, where we stayed until lunch time, some good birds: Oriental Honeybuzzard, Philippine Hawk-Eagle, Philippine Swiftlet, great views of Chestnut-faced Babbler, Mountain Leaf-Warbler, Striated Grassbird, Turquoise Flycatcher, Bicolored Flowerpecker, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker and Pygmy Flowerpecker. After lunch we walked around some forest at slightly lower altitude and added Blue-headed Fantail, Citrine Canary Flycatcher, brief views of Brown-headed Thrush and a pair of stunning Luzon Flameback.
Day 18. Early morning walk around the grounds added Green Imperial-Pigeon, Philippine Cuckoo-Dove, Red-crested Malkoha, Mountain White-eye, White-throated Kingfisher, Stripe-headed Rhabdornis and Coppersmith Barbet. Then a long drive to Subic Bay Freeport Zone, about 100km north of Manila. We arrived late in the afternoon and went to Crown Peak area. Some good birding here included Red Junglefowl, Colasisi, Guaiabero, Philippine Coucal, Oriental Dollarbird, Bar-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, Blue-throated Bee-eater, Elegant Tit, and a roost site for a large number of Blue-naped Parrots. Spent next couple of nights in a 4 bedroom house at Subic Homes.
Day 19. Arrived at a forest area near Kamana Resort just after dawn. Here we had four woodpeckers within an hour; Sooty, White-bellied, Philippine and Luzon Flameback. Also Philippine Coucal, Blackish Cuckoo-shrike, Whiskered Treeswift, Luzon Hornbill, Philippine Tailorbird, Green Racquet-tail, Red-crested Malkoha, Rufous Coucal, Amethyst Brown-Dove, Philippine Green-Pigeon. After a late lunch it was back to Crown Peak area with similar results to previous day plus Coleto and close views of Luzon Woodpecker.
Day 20. Walked up the Hill 394 expecting some great species. It was unusually quiet and we had to work hard to find anything. Eventually we add Philippine Green-Pigeon, Luzon Hornbill, Blue-naped Parrots, Rufous Coucal, White-browed Shama and Chinese Goshawk. In the afternoon we went to Blue-throated Bee-eater nest site, where about 100 bee-eaters were nesting in an embankment, a beautiful sight to behold.
Day 21. Off to Candaba Swamp, one of the few big wetland areas remaining in the Philippines. Spent most of the day here and added Grey and Purple Herons, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Wandering Whistling-Duck, Northern Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Philippine Duck, Northern Pintail, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Greater Painted Snipe, Long-toed Stint, Purple Swamphen, Oriental Pratincole, Whiskered Tern, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Oriental Skylark, Oriental Reed-warbler, Tawny Grassbird, Pied Bushchat, Dusky Warbler, White-shouldered Starling and Zitting Cisticola. Overnight in Manila.
Day 22. Drove south of Manila to Mt Palay Palay and then Puerto Azul. The highlight here was a stunning male Philippine Trogon. Other birds included Philippine Hawk-cuckoo and Philippine Serpent Eagle. After lunch we drove back to Manila airport and commenced the journey back to Sydney.
