Introduction

We had been fortunate to visit mid-Thailand before but this trip we were intent on Photographing Pittas & Rail Babbler. The time of year was selected as it was their breeding season when they are most easily seen.

The Flights were £650 return from Newcastle via Schipol, Bangkok then onto Phuket booked with Netflights.com.

We were looked after by SouthThailandbirding.com.. Both Games & Ian were brilliant looking after us 24/7 and the very reasonable cost included all travel in their 4x4, accommodation, all food & drink(except alcohol), expert knowledge, use of portable hides, collection from airport, everything. They became good friends.

Day One - Bangkok airport 26/04/14.

0930-1200.30c high light cloud very humid.

Arrived early after leaving Newcastle at 1345 arrived Amsterdam 1630 local time then left 1750 arriving 0900 Bangkok 50 mins early. A long trek to our gate for the flight at 1220 to Phuket but the benefit was the `Shrine gardens `near the McDonalds food outlet within the airport watching Red-collared dove, Zebra dove, Streak-eared bulbul & Brown shrike. The waders were on the wet areas between the runways ie Wood Sandpipers, Black-winged stilts & Red-wattled lapwing.

From Phuket airport to Thai Muang marshes fields and beach 1500 to 1630
picked up at airport at 1330 after bags coming off wrong carousel. Met by Ian Dugdale and Games of Phuket birding into 4x4 to first destination. Looked for Spotted owl, no luck but Chestnut-headed beeater and Black-naped oriole & plenty of Grey bellied squirrels. Then off to near Makule hotel. Parked here and walked flooded field stream and wood. Heard and taped out Blue-winged pitta & watched for (without cameras) 15 mins. Also over Oriental pratincole, Pin-tailed snipe, Yellow & Cinnamon bittern

Laem Pakarang 1730 to 1830

This scenic quiet beach had a wader roost! The high tide line was composed of coral rubble. We managed to find a pair of Malaysian plover on the spit. Waders were good on the 2 wader roosts there with Lesser & Greater Sand plovers, Grey-tailed tattler and Red-necked stint. Off to Baan Khunta hotel an hours drive away. Basic but clean rooms. Good Thai evening with a good variety and far too much to eat.

Day Two - Sri Phang Nga 27/04/2014 0545 to 1700

Got up 0530 went to Sri Phang Nga park drove with a 50p entrance fee. Driving right to the road end we took a quick breakfast before taking the end trail footpath. After 400m and 4 easy stream crossings you come to the Banded pitta site (just past 2 signs together on your right of the path). You take the short trail to the exposed area where the Hides were set up. Amazing views of Banded pittas all morning from hide as well as brief views of Hooded pittas. Took 1 hr break from area, set up hides by stream nearby for Chestnut-backed forktails which we used hides again to photograph. After the mornings birding, we had fried egg rice al fresco in the Park cafe, then had hides out again by the road photographing Rusty piculet going to its nest. The rest of the day was spent trying to photo Blue-winged pitas, saw loads but couldn`t get close enough. We managed to get images of Hooded pittas but in humid conditions. Back to Baan Khunta hotel for 1830 meal had Pork omelette, chicken legs broth and red curry chicken. Good meal again. After darkness descending went off to the local palm plantation with Barn Owl flying overhead for 15 mins. Called it a day after 30 mins looking for nightjars as the mossies were bad here.

Day Three - Sri Phang Nga 28/04/2014 0545-1300

We got up early as per usual after a decent night`s sleep at Baan Kunha basic hotel. We drove to the turning circle at the end of the reserve and gradually walked back to the entrance. We heard various species of Broadbill and hirundines and swifts. We managed to find a Oriental dwarf kingfisher nest erecting a hide in its proximity. In the same region up the hill side we were lead to a day roosting Javan frogmouth. After slipping heavily in this very rough terrain we both came a cropper on the wet rocks and vines, it was worth it. The whole reserve seemed to be crawling with packs of bird photographers from Asia.

Khao Sok reservoir 1400-1600

We arrived early afternoon at the small Khao sok village having gone through the military style checkpoint by the dam. We were met at the resort quay by the owner of the Floating bungalows in his large long narrow boat setting off at a fair lick through the most scenic views in the world. Passing between high 1200 foot limestone stacks swamped with tropical forest, surprisingly very little boat traffic. As the water level was low the dead old tree tops showed above the water level which proved to be handy perching posts for Osprey & Fish eagles. We then weaved our way to the far end of the reservoir to our floating bungalow resort. They were rather like primitive wicker rooms with no windows on floating logs. The bed a very thin mattress on the floor. Bathing, a dive into the reservoir. The floating reataurant`s food was amazing, a large fried fish, red curry, herb and a salad with cooked herbs, etc. In the evening we had a night safari from the boat looking for owls which proved elusive but we did manage to see 3 Bear cats.

Day Four - Khao Sok 29/04/2014 05:30 to 19:30

I awoke early to find a swarm of bees in my open air, very basic room. After bathing in the lake, a fried egg on toast breakfast we then set off on our expedition that was supposed to take 7 hrs in total. Went to the `Out of bounds area` on the reservoir having gained prior permission. We went via the checkpoint on the lake which took 1.5 hrs by boat to get there seeing Fish eagles, Ospreys, Jungle fowl & Dollarbird en route. After briefly visiting the Ranger centre we headed to the valley in search of our target- Storm stork - which was last seen 20 years ago prior to flooding of the valleys. It had since been seen recently by a local guide 6 weeks prior in the stream of the target valley. When we got there the water levels were low & we had to tie the boat up 45 minutes walk away downstream from where we wanted. The trekking was very hard in humid conditions with the guide using a machete along old Goar trails. After being cut to ribbons by vines, and the leeches weren`t pleasant either, we eventually got to the point we were supposed to land from the boat. Our group then commenced again, this time wading through a stream, climbing another rise down to the stream valley where the sightings had occurred. As we were covered in mud and wet nothing seemed to matter as we waded sometimes in a meter of water up the stream as it was impassible to walk along the sides of the narrow valley. We saw Green broadbill, Black & red Broadbill, Great Hornbill, Bamboo woodpecker, White crowned Forktail, Ferruginous babbler as well as myself and guide getting brief views of 2 Storm Storks. Also we had 3 individual herons that we could not identify! Then we returned to the boat as a massive storm approached. We set off at pace past a nesting Black-thighed Falconet. The mammals were in abundance with an Elephant, many Goar, Samba deer, Dusky Langur, a family of Smooth otter, Sun bear and Wild boar, all within 45 minutes. Then the storm really got going. We sheltered under our umbrellas as we sped back to the Floating resort. Evening meal was superb again. The trip had taken 14 hours but it was worth it.

Day Five - Khao Sok reservoir 30/04/2014 05:45 to11:00

Got up to the sound of Jungle fowl. After bathing in the lake, eggs on toast for breakfast again. We made our farewells to everybody at the resort & back on the boat to Khao Sok reserve which was near some more modern floating bungalows. The ride was probably the best trip on the planet, not much birdlife but 1200 foot high sheer limestone cliffs and islands in blue sky. Wow. At the reserve there were Rusty-fronted piculet and amazing views of Rufous-collared kingfishers in the woodland on a steep walk. Gibbons gave a good show as well as bulbuls and babblers. Afterwards we set off on our3.5 hrs trip to our next destination.

Krung Ching 30/04/2014 16:00 to 19:30

Arriving at the `hotel resort`, some 3 miles from the National park entrance. It was late afternoon & on the approach road we went over a river which had a breeding colony of Red-breasted swallows. After dropping off the gear in our luxurious hotel we went for a walk to look for Whiskered treeswift, finding 2 at second our second attempt. Remaining till dark for a night walk to look for Slow Loris, which was fruitless, but whilst waiting, Red and black broadbill and a group of 7 Bushy-crested Hornbills were active in the area. In the evening from our quality accommodation we crossed the ford to a local small restaurant which provided the usual high quality Thai 5 course meal.

Day Six - Krung Ching 01/05/2014 All day

Got up 0545 and after a basic breakfast we headed off to Krung Ching NP parking next to the Information centre in the base of the valley. The army of Chinese bird photographers were there before us and we all headed off beyond the centre up the track, up the hill into the forest 1.5 km to the Malayasian rail babblers site. As we made our way there we had various Bulbuls, Tailorbirds and Green broadbill with Jim getting a brief view of an Argus pheasant. We arrived at the location (next to an openwalled shelter) to find the Chinese hard at work in their hides. After 1.5hrs queueing we set up our hides as the Rail Babbler appeared on the track 3x in an hour. Worth the wait! We headed back to the car park finding a pair of Horned tree lizard laying eggs. Back in the car park the Chinese were active photographing Flowerpeckers and spiderhunters. Then the rain started. The storm came in as we sheltered in the information centre, a massive 2m Land monitor appeared walking down the stream behind the building. Once the rain stopped the birds were very active. We then drove a mile back to a viewpoint admiring some tame Prinias and a Brown shrike. We retired exhausted to a superb early evening meal and then were out with lamps checking trees along the park approach road eventually finding our prey halfway up the canopy, a Slow Loris, the only poisonous primate. What a day.

Day Seven - Krung Ching 02/05/2014

Having awoken 0545 we left Krung ching gardens (really nice accommodation but no restaurant there) we crossed over the river to an older B&B cafe for breakfast. Then we drove back to the Park, early morning to mid morning, birding at the entrance gate region in a 400m length of road, very productive with bird parties constantly going through. The highlights were Red-bearded beeater,Violet cuckoo & 3 species of Malkoha & Crimson Sunbird.

Krabi mangroves 16:00 to 19:00

Having taken most of the afternoon to drive from Krung Ching to Krabi (backpacking city) we arrived by the river and started walking the boardwalk by the river. The camera gear misted up straight away, a difficulty we were getting used to and I would advise anybody going to Thailand to get a large good quality lens cloth. By the car were an obliging pair of Collared kingfisher but we had to run the gauntlet of Long-tailed macaques to get going on the boardwalk. I would advise carrying a heavy stick to protect yourself against the alpha male. We heard 2 Mangove pittas but couldn`t entice one via taping. However we did see a Water monitor crossing the river at the end of the trail so Ian & Games phoned for a local boat guide to take us through the mangrove swamps. Whilst waiting a Brown winged Kingfisher turned up on the other bank and the boatman picked us up & drifted right next to it. After this he knew exactly what we wanted and we saw Ruddy kingfisher more Collared and we chased around after 3 flitting Mangrove pittas in fading light. but couldn`t get a clean photo shot. After we drove 5 mins away to the Dee Andaman Hotel, too posh for us, but it was noisy, revellers coming in at 3.00 am and dogs barking outside. However the evening meal was inexpensive & superb and we were awed by a very heavy thunder and lightning storm outside while we were eating.

Day Eight - Krabi/Phang Nga mangroves 03/05/2014 06:00 to 17:00

We left the hotel at 0600 seeing Scaly-breasted mannikin in the car park & it was 5 mins drive back to mangrove boardwalk at krabi. Mossies were initially easier and no monkeys. We walked around and saw Collared Kingfishers. We heard Mangrove pitta but gave up and went to Pang Nga Mangrove reserve. A small reserve with a boardwalk proximal to a busy road. However we soon found a photogenic Mangrove Pitta giving superb views for 30 mins as well as Ashy tailorbird. From here we headed to Pang Nga fishing village between 2 mangrove areas. Scenic with the Krabi limestone islands in the distance. We then spent 2 hrs till 1130 here getting 4 species of sunbird, Mangrove whistler, Oriental whiteye. Red and black broadbill, Mangrove pitta, Streak-breasted and Greater flameback woodpecker. After another amazing Thai lunch we then set off looking for blue-winged pitta on backroads, ending up on a road with a dead end at a Buddhist retreat. We did retreat due to mossies after trying to charm out 3 Hooded pitta, only getting brief views. We came across a stream with hundreds of Butterflies flying around reminscent of a Disney cartoon. From the U-shaped valley we then headed to Queens park where we heard many Blue winged pitas, only getting occasional brief decent views, we weren`t quick enough to get images. An hour later we were at our last hotel- Phuket airport hotel - 3 minutes by the free hotel taxi from the airport and likewise from a superb quiet beach where we watched the sun go down whilst having our last Thai meal, literally on the beach, a great way to end a true adventure.
