Introduction

Gurney's Pitta conditions are near extinct from Klong Thom distric, Khao Norchuchi Krabi province in south Thailand. Due to deforestation, catch the bird, villagers to use forest areas traditionally more than 20 years until the present, with Gurney's Pitta Remaining in the field Klong Thom 2 pairs or less and in the nearby forest, about 6-8 pairs (* 1) scattered in the forest. It is very rare these days are extremely vulnerable to extinction.

In 2003 the NGO mercenary group led by Dr.Tony Thil Hla (1954-2013) funded by Birdlife International funded survey of wild birds in southern Myanmar Thannithiyari Monsoon forest region, he and his team set point in many areas to explore. This forest covers a vast area of southern Myanmar. From the seaside port of Dawei town way down Kawthoung town adjacent to the border with Burma Ranong Province of Thailand. Tropical rainforest climate near the equator. In survey trip, his team have found Gurney's Pitta many are in the forest. The last survey in 2008.

Thannithiyari almost all of this area is under the possession of military forces Karen want to separatism. Lenya National Park (the name is not official as a national park) the one of part Thanithiyari forest, in some part of area still ceasefire between the Myanmar army and the Karen soldiers.

This is a big issue problem. Why birder around the world can't go for birding by them self. But the problem of separatism is not big issue for birders, that's real our problem was the invasion deforestation. Whether locals people and Karen soldiers But it was not to much worse than government of Myanmar allow to forest concessions to the capitalist Thailand and Malaysia for make oil palm plantation.

Back in 1952 in Thailand captured a female specimen of Gurney's Pitta was collected in Prajuab Khirikhun Province (upper southern Thailand) by the pricipal of Pince Royal College, which the Prachuap Khiri Khan. In contrast to wild Thannithiyari saturating. It shows that the two countries are connected wild abundance. But later, Thailand is the deforestation depleted the forest habitats of Gurney's Pitta extinct down to in the end. Only 39 birds left the couple living in the lowland forest of the Khao Norchuchi Krabi

In 2013, I and Thiri (daughter Tony Htin Hla) discussed the Partnership to open the tour in South East Asia and want to new route in the south of Myanmar for Gurney's Pitta was specifically so I went as bird watchers and business man from www.wildbirdeco.net (WB), For Thiri, she owned the largest bird watching tours in Myanmar. Also she is bird guided by the Wild Adventure Travel & Tour (WATT).

Our date selection of the 10th - 17th May 2014 as the start of the rainy season in Southeast Asia. During this time, Gurney's Pitta or other birds. It is the time birds began to pair. And the pair began to dribble, but we are not serious because we have seen in Thailand before. For this trip just hear Gurney's Pitta is enough. Our purpose of survey trip is : explore good birding spot, build accommodation for our guests. The most important thing is to coordinate and invest money to Myanmar and Karen soldiers that are in the forest.

This survey the two companies did not bring a guest to share in any way. And used to classify the bird by hearing instead. To save time in doing things. The survey team has 3 people, 2 birder from Wild Bird Eco Tour including me, Mr.Kompol Sukumarin (KS) has experience of being a volunteer for rehabilitation of lowland forest in the North from 1995 to 1996 and 1 birder from WATT , Sir Gideon Sa Myo Zaw (SG).

SG have experience in the survey area during 2006-2008, he found many species of birds. Gurney's population, especially Pitta has a pair of hundreds. Even easier to find them next to the village He knew very well that the various points. Where, however, should be to start exploring. Thiri have taken the map that his father had used when we refer to the survey. Red circle in the map Gurney's Pitta before the survey area is located south of Myeik drive another 120 miles or driving by 4 wd. going next 8 hours and the excitement began there.

How to get there

Please contact Wild Bird Eco www.wildbirdeco.net, email : wildbirdtour@yahoo.com for professional service, not recommend to use local guide.

Conclusion

Generally no violence in the area. People in Myanmar cute. The cost is also very affordable compared to other countries in Asia as well.

Pre Day: 9th - Bangkok Thailand to Yangon Myanmar

I & KS departed from the Don Muang airport Thailand 19:30 hours, transfer by low cost airline Nok Air, takes 1 hr. To Yangon airport, Thiri waiting for us. Waste time on immigration for almost an hour. Have said before that Myanmar recently started opening only one year after U.S. President Obama's visit. So management system or technology to support tourism is not ready yet. This change includes the price of the room and suddenly came and some may be unacceptable.

When I found Thiri and sent permit enter the country of immigration to her, for put it to Xerox it. for tomorrow I have to be filed with the immigration at the border Myeik airport If no, I would not go out of the airport Myeik it. But Xerox shops during the early part of this really hard. Thiri take us not far from Yangon airport to the HC Guest Hotel.

Day 1: 10th - Yangon fly south in Myeik.

05:45 Thiri pick us up to go to the domestic airport. She brings a map his father had used survey to me. I am very glad her to honor me, we got used to it because it is a precious treasure. Father of elite explorers birds of Myanmar given before her father died. The red circle indicates that this area is just south of Myeik driving away another 120 miles or 4 wd. Went another 8 hours, which is just across the Sakae district. Prachuap Khiri Khan Province The Gurney's Pitta has been collected since 1952. The excitement of the two of us began there.

Air KBZ took us two hours to leave the former capital Yangon into a major port of southern Myeik Airport. Airport SG and his assistant came to get us before then. Immigration officials had to rush to get a visa to enter the city once. Take a few minutes to put our luggage into the Toyota SUV 4wd because the space is filled with a variety of supplies such as dry food, fresh food, water, etc. All them we need to live in the wild, up to 7 days. We sat rocking back and forth in the car to 8 hours on distance only 120 miles because the road worse. Along the way we saw both sides of the forest was destroyed.

When we arrive Kae Chaung village, every one got out of the car was twisting left and right release fatigue. I heard a Blue-winged Pitta call in the woods behind the house. It's as if they said I was This trip I met Gurney's Pitta course.

Logistic Manager(LM) we hire from the capital Naypyidaw. Came out to meet us He arrived three days ahead of us. He is responsible prepare many things to our survey, especially including build Bamboo camp, supply to the area of expertise that speaks two languages is as Myanmar and Karen, motorcycle prepared. Then take 1 hour from the village to the camp.

At Campsite, Bird and Wildlife Survey of Myanmar awaits us already led by Lay Win, Moses. They told where to find Gurney's Pitta and good bird spot for our group. By Moses Was one of five members of the expedition that discovered Gurney's Pitta in 2003-2008.

Near dusk, then I quickly set up the my tent, Labor ties hammock around the camp. After finish quick set up tent, i walk around to look our environment, the condition campsite is very good location built under the shade of a bamboo forest. Walk down to three or four steps away from the stream. Cause problems with water. It is also a junction of two road to survey birds. Main Camp make by bamboo it's fast growing tree, we don't worry about destroy forest. Native people have the expertise to build a dining table seats and other materials from bamboo.

In addition, the camp has a generator for make a lighting and is equipped with a plug-in for charge. I went down to bathe in a stream cold water helps me relieve exhausted from traveling all day as well. Dinner meal cooking by LM., Although I would like to eat Thai food, But this meal was very tasty. After greeting, talking about bird with wildlife surveys, I go to sleep quickly.

Day 2: 11th - Survey

Last night, we heard Indochinese Frogmouth (Javan Frogmouth) calling nearby, but with exhausted from traveling all day, we sleep early. Tonight, we intend that playback it Frogmouth come to photography

This morning saw the forest around the very rich. Also around here still cutting only biggest tree, but less than the outside(outside every tree is gone). As you read this, it sounds a loud chainsaw cutting trees. The survey consisted of me, KS, SG SG assistant and interpreter Karen. LM has to take care of setting up camp within Camp. Every day he provide drinking water, Breakfast, Lunch box, Dinner and Dessert for us.

Today we intend to explore two different places by foot along the road in the forest. This road is a separate line to the Karen village. And one split to the Thailand border. Just to start walking the male & female Rufous-nacked Hornbill flew overhead in the distance, White-crowned Hornbill flying over the treetops. Hear Great Argus, White-handed Gibbon, Dusky Langur singing near and far.

Went to be around 1 km or around 8:00 am. Gotten the hot sun, but by 10:00 am the stronger, making it more humid. Weather, even my team and I are very familiar. But for here brought all the weary rapidly. We need to drink more water. But we all carry water to each vial is sufficient. Need to drink water from streams instead. Birds we saw and heard in two first mile Hooded Pitta, Blue-winged Pitta, Blue Pitta, Buff-rumped Woodpecker, Banded Woodpecker, Violet Cuckoo, Blue-rumped Parrot, Creasted serphent Eagle, Greater Green Leafbird, Blue-winged Leafbird.

After lunch We decided to walk back to camp to rest, not exploring because now the sun is very hot bird very quiet as well. At the camp, the best thing is to have a dip in the stream and rest but did not sleep well because the Red-breasted Bee-eater, Blue-eared Kingfisher nesting near a camp. It make us take a camera to photo them.

15:00 to 17:30 walk to survey again, all day not found or heard Gurney's Pitta, but other birds was good such as Black-and-Red Broadbill, Green Broadbill, Bamboo Woodpecker, Great-eared Nightjar, Brown Shrike, Tiger. Shrike, White-hooded Munia, etc.
21:00 we play back call of Indochiness Frogmouth, It flies perched on a branch above my tent.

Day 3: 12th - Discovery Lowland forest.

This morning aimed at village forces Karen to ask permission to enter the area surveyed birds. Although permission from the Forest Department of Myanmar. Indeed, they know since we drove across the river Tannathaiyi Two days before, they was radio and told each base before then. we can come to camp here because a great coordination of a team of Myanmar and the strong relationship of SG, LM with the locals here. Because they are often used to survey birds together

It takes 1 hr. By 4wd, on the way we stop exploring the Gurney's Pitta, the Plain-pouched Hornbill Hornbill fly over huge masses of this species in Thailand were very difficult. We find Tapir a new footprint on the road, it is rare Mammal near extinct. Brings excitement to all of us. Also found footprints Cloud Leopard, Barking Deer

After meet general of Karea army, he allow to enter his area for survey, That afternoon, we found the biggest low land forest at side of the village. The forest is similar to the Khao Norchuchi in Thailand, GPS Garmin told altitudes below sea level at -90, N 11*42'09.8” E099*10'39.3” Local guide said that he had seen Gurney's here in many time, KS instinct told him that right away. This is the home of the Gurney's Pitta certainly no doubt, sounds sing the same two pairs of Hooded Pitta around Crested Jay, Black-and-Red Broadbill, Pied Hornbill, Orange-breasted Trogon, Cream-vented Bulbul.

Although we have little hope that the season this month, Gurney's will not respond to sound on tape. But we gradually went wild inched deeper. There are footprints in the swamp large animals like the Asian Wild Elephant, Wild Boar, Darking Deer come down to drink, White-throated Kingfisher flies disappeared, No any respond or see a Gurney's.

A little before noon, we decided to get out of here. We go to another route to explore, but the car 4 wd. of us do not drive through deep mud. So back at the main camp.

Around four o'clock we return to explore the original route again. Local guide took us to the point where he find Gurney's many times. And it's true, as he said. We hear Territory call the Gurney's is far. For here also found good specie such as Crested Fireback, Rusty-napped Pitta, Large Flogmouth(sleeping place), Chestnust-capped Thrust, Himalayan Flamback and numerous other birds.

Day 4: 13th - Discover Gurney's Pitta

Today we explore the separation into two groups. The first to explore a new route on the GPS coordinates Moses provided. This group SG, KS, a local guide to go by bike. The second group, including myself, SK, local guides to explore the low forest met yesterday again.

I spent half a day in lowland forest until near noon was not heard or seen, but have found many interesting bird species such as Maroon-breasted Philentoma, Banded Kingfisher, Babbler, Cream-vented Bulbul, Large-scimitar Babbler, Helmeted Hornbill. In the afternoon I meet the General Karen army at military. We talk about the benefits, conditions and contracts about to take visitors to see the birds here. I believe this's a first time for here to SAVE GURNEY'S PITTA from tourist. I came bank to camp in the evening. Hear good news from the first group, They found (seen) one male the Gurney's Pitta and heard territory call at several points.

Today's successful exploration well encountered birds and business negotiations.

I believe that if I took the tourists to come here constantly. I can convince the villagers Karen and soldiers to help conserve forests and wildlife. Because they are earning more sustainable. For the Burmese government can not do anything in this area could be the source of the story. But it takes time to go step by step.

Day 5: 14th - Amazing Forest

Today explore together using a motorcycle. We intend to explore another route deep into the forest. For four days ago We are happy with hearing Territory call of Gurney's in many spots, especially the male saw yesterday. Today, we hope may to take picture of them when it comes to hopping as same as yesterday.

We heading to east of the the forest, about 6 miles drive over mud car 4 wd. can not drive pass it yesterday. Early rainy season is more convenient to travel by motorcycle use. We do not know who cut through the rich forest line. Local guides say that the road is long, almost to the borders of Thailand-Myanmar. This road along the stream to see many species of birds that come to drink water or some bird species living along streams such as White-crowned Forktail, Black-and-Yellow Broadbill and many pair of Black-and-Red Broadbill(more than 50 pairs). Habitat similar Keang Krachan National park or Krung Ching in Thailand.

Arrived at a forest found a large area of forest villagers burned the forest to mobile plantation. Here KS hear territory call of Gurney's several times, voice came from forest edge are being burn, but they did not find bird.

In same area Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying over the forest, for this species in Thailand, it's a very rare bird species, KS can be recorded by camera immediately, for this species shows that this area must have the main river course because this species like perch on tall trees along the streams or the river medium above.

At the same time, he also heard several Plain-Pouch Hornbill in the distance. We look through the gap of the trees, Not to long time to try found hundreds of them standing live trees along the river across from us. This's Hornbill species in Thailand, I and KS have seen a few times in life. For me watching birds for 25 years, seen 2 times each in Hala-Bala forest, Thailand borders Malaysia only. We are excited rush for the recording both still images and video immediately. The frame count to 80 birds, for here also we heard Rufous-collared Kingfisher calling in Ratthan(plam) forest river.

It's really hot here during the day. Finished eating lunch I walked down to swimming in Ngawun Chaung river, everyone must think this, So follow me down to swim together, except SG to take care of our luggage on the riverbank.

Around afternoon return to camp, surveyed birds along the way, Heavy rain on the way back it's make the road slippery, sloppy muddy forest, Motorcycle control more difficult And throughout the afternoon, heavy rain was coming down and we can only sit in the camp. Dinner, we decided to change from the original survey plan to stay here more one night, move to explore the forest on the way back to Myeik town because there SG had been a survey in 2008 that he had found at least 10 pairs of Gurney's Pitta.

Day 6: 15th - Move to New Camp

Today, we pack luggage to move to survey birds at Chaung Nao Biang Village, Mileage 82 , N 11*37'42.5” E099*04'08.4” for one night. SG had the last survey three years ago. In each survey takes 45 day per a trip. KS told me he had a Gurney's very easy to call it out of the woods to show off the roadside villages!

About 1.30 hours reach the village. After lunch We set up a tent inside an abandoned lumber company located near the village. The building is built on a hill along the road to see the vast forest in front. SG said that the forest changed little, may be today we will see them at least 1-2 pairs of birds.

15:00 We start to survey, use local people for navigator, Drive down to the south of the village about 1 km. car turn left onto the logging road out of the forest, car ran into a little, SG seemed shocked with the change of forest of the original forest has become rubber plantation. Pass rubber plantations three years old. We did not mind too much. But when the car ran over the hill, every one on car shocked than last!

There is a large gate blocking the road. A sign over the door written word Htoo Cooperation, security guards rushed out of a side road to block our car passing through. SG began confused with forest change to the face. Three years ago it was not like this. Officials from Lumber Company, ran out from the office to ask us where to go! Spend time talking while he allowed us to drive into. When we drove through the gates to the dejected and almost beaten to survey birds. Forests have been largely cleared for oil palm plantation, We saw the palm-time, 2 years in the bags. Are being watered from watering machine automatically, Small sing written "Costa Rica Evolution seed"!

Navigator said that the Burmese government has given concessions to Malaysia companies two years ago. Although forests are being destroyed to pressure sense of us. But in a little time of the survey ends today. We have no time to sit and grieve or sad with what they see. Each is a very professional When the car stopped, every one take a equipment and climb up the cliff soil immediately.

The forest will change, but the navigation still remember the original direction of other environments. We started walking on a forest path. I try to playback from iPod and visually observe walk in the woods, we only found Banded Kingfisher, Crested Jay, Green Broadbill, Hooded Pitta vocals on the route. SG told me that he never walked this trail before but from habitat probability of Gurney's Pitta in Trail, certainly. About 20 minutes later, we reached the knees collapsed. I could not do anything to discourage. When we met the a few locals people still cutting and burning forest was biggest cleared to make mobile plantation. I dare say that the six days through the jungle have seen forest was destroyed, That's just a small fraction of it, but here is biggest than. Someone in the group says. "As a Napalm Bomb HERE". Me and a friend sat on a stump that it once towering skyscrapers.

SG took up smoking , I roll a cigarette from his This is the first roll in the past 14 years, I quit it. We compress the lungs as cigarette smoke for a while. 5 minutes later we keep bear exploring, SG highly skilled He can find the old trail easily, Although forest not left to the same. I spent nearly an hour in many spots no call respond, Except two time look like Gurney's Pitta hopping under bush. Until near evening walk back the same way.

The walk back to the car In mind, I think about the future of them. The future of this forest How many years they were alive. Even Tannithanitryi forest vast space of the South. But this invasion would not take long. I think of conservation in the form of tourism. If they are economically from tourism. He seems to maintain forest and wildlife to Because this made more sustainable catering.

LAST ALARM CALL TO SAY GOODBYE. 50 meters to the car and then suddenly alarm call of Gurney's twice! I turned to the SG. and smiling, Do not tell KS know, what did my mind mean, We know God sent it to encourage of us. birds are communicating as if "Do not worry about us. Thanks for the help. We will maintain our lives for as long as possible".
