This was my first trip to Oz, certainly it was a different world, not just new species of bird but many new families that I had to get to grips with. It was a family holiday to see my daughter who is travelling Australasia.

We flew with Emirates and it was £665 return each from Newcastle. The exchange rate was 1.88 AusD to the UK Pound. We found the food everywhere of high quality and very reasonable .The Petrol was half price to UK prices which had just come down before leaving .Hiring Apartments via `Stayz` was the answer making sure they provided linen rather than using an hotel as they were far more spacious and economic. MYKI bus card are purchased in various shops and post offices in Victoria district and are a great way to get around. Weather was about 24c during the day occ cloudy days .While in Apollo bay the sea was a sea state 5 most days so we had to select the best day to go out to see the seabirds. Australian TV is still in the 70`s.

27th March 2015

Thursday, Left Newcastle at 1315 for Dubai 7hr flight arriving 1230 had 2,5 hrs there before taking off 6.5 hrs to Kuala Lumpar. 1,5 hours there before final flight of 7 hours to Melbourne getting there early hours 0200 then got taxi to hotel.

28th March 2015

Having arrived at our hotel at 0300 am we slept in till midday. In the hotel complex we bought our MYKI bus card which used to travel around the city to see the sights (driving is not recommended due to the tram system). It took 2 trams from Bell city hotel, Preston across Melbourne down to our flat at Middle beach some 300m from the beach and seafront. A relaxing afternoon at the small shopping centre in Middle beach, which is in a very nice quiet residential area. The commoner birds we became acquainted with Australasian Magpie, Australian Raven, Silver gull, Common Mynah, Magpie Lark. An evening walk back to the Flat and we saw the Common Bushtail Possum illuminated by the street lights in those avenues with short trees.

29th March 2015

At dawn from the flat a 10min walk back to Middle beach shops I crossed over the road next to tram stop to visit Albert park. It was still covered in stands etc from the Grand prix but the trees along south especially good around the bowling club with Yellow-throated Miner, Red Wattlebird, Brush Wattlebird, Crested pigeon, Rainbow Lorikeet & Eastern Rosella. The lake is immense with a good variety of wildfowl. Black Swan, Chestnut Teal, Pacific Black Duck, Purple Swamphen, Common Coot.

30th March 2015

Early am walk from Middle beach to St Kilda and back along the beach. At St Kilda as well as the pier there is a slight inlet with a few rocky promontories. As well as Cormorants and Wattle birds there were my first Galahs.

During the day we travelled to the city centre to bump into the Australian cricket team but the highlight was the Royal Botanical gardens where we saw Willie-wagtail, White-browed Scrub wren, Brown Thornbill, Bell Miner, Noisy Miner, Yellow-throated Miner, Fairy martin. In the evening we got the tram to St Kilda for the Little penguin show on the pier. Well worth it at Sunset watching them come in close with a Hoary grebe watching over us.

1st April 2015

Left Middle beach at 1000 on tram 12 to Southern cross station where walked through paying 18 dollars to take the `Skybus` to the airport where picked up our hire car from Hertz, rather than negotiate inner city travel. Set off at 1130 along M79 then onto M80 west , M1, C134 ,B100 Great ocean road to Torquay. There was a surfing festival at our first stop by the beach which was good for birds. Then we continued to Aireys inlet. Lorne various superb views and stops to Apollo Bay. Near Lorne an Echidna crossed the road. Birds en route were Brown Goshawk, Spotted harrier and various egrets and herons.

2nd April 2015

We stayed at the `Captains quarters apartment` at Apollo bay where birds were abundant and tame Superb Fairywren, Yellow-rumped Thornbill, Silver-eye, New Holland Honeyeater Brush Wattlebird, Satin Bowerbird, Common Starling, European Goldfinch.
During the day we travelled to the heritage site of Cape Otoway, a pleasant place good cafe full of history and aborigine folk law. There was a visible distant seabird passage with 2 sp of Albatross and 4 sp Shearwater. We managed to see 8 Koalas by the road as well as Kangaroo and wallaby.

3rd April 2015

Otaway Tree Top Walk, winding drive hr from Apollo bay. Feeders with King parrot, Blue-winged Parrot next to the cafe .They were cutting the grass near the car park that attracted Superb fairy wrens in full plumage and very tame. A noisy walk through canopy with local kids didn`t deter birds.2hrs to walk around very impressive rainforest seeing Grey Fantail, Rose Robin, Yellow Robin Grey Shrike-thrush, Striated Thornbill, White-throated Treecreeper. We then had a forest walk at Triple falls Laughing Kookaburra, Bassian Thrush,Pink Robin, Hooded Robin, Brown Treecreeper, Eastern Spinebill, Satin Bowerbird.

4th April 2015

Moonshine Fishing trip, Apollo bay was a chance to get up close to seabirds but in a 3m swell. 3 species of Albatross close sitting on the sea while fishing passing shearwaters even a passing Pomarine skua. In the harbour Little penguin and Great crested terns.

5th April 2015

Erskine falls, Cora Lynn cascades were visited with the more of commoner woodland birds seen.

6th April 2015

Got up at dawn to drive the road that takes you to Otaway point to see the Marsupials feeding there. Over 100 kangaroo, 3 wallabies & 2 Koalas. We took the road off to the east mile short of the Park this lead to the beach where we had Shy Albatross, Australasian Gannet, Sooty Oystercatcher, Hooded Plover, Great Crested Tern, Gang-gang Cockatoo, Galah, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Crimson Rosella, Beautiful Firetail.

By 0930 we were at the Twelve apostles region including Lochard gorge. Birds of note here were Singing Honeyeater & Long-billed Corella. In the afternoon we visited the forest trails of Melba gully near lavers hill finding Gang-gang Cockatoo, Crimson Rosella, Pink Robin, Yellow Robin, Olive Whistler.

8th April 2015

We left Apollo bay along Ocean road to Inverloch (east of Melbourne) where we had hired a house 800m from the beach. Stopping at Bells beach, Torquay to see the World surfing competition & have a brunch. The highlights while driving were the birds of prey, Black Kite,Wedge-tailed Eagle , Little Eagle & Australian Kestrel.

9th April 2015

In Inverloch there is an information centre in the middle of the small town where Bird reserves leaflets can be sought. I took the Thompson estate walk early am and on the beach pm finishing at Screw creek trail and back to Thompson Estate trail in the evening. Yellow Robin, Crested Shrike-tit, Striated Pardalote, Silver-eye, Yellow-faced Honeyeater, White-plumed Honeyeater, White-naped Honeyeater, Eastern Spinebill.

10th April 2015

Philip island - we set off from Inverloch at 0900 on a sunny day. After stopping at the local Information centre we drove to the Woolami peninsula. A spectacular long beach we walked for a km along it then up cliff to go to tip watching Albatross` flying past. White fronted chats and 2 Australian pipits were on the heath land. However my daughter was inches away from standing on a 1.2m copperhead snake (highly venomous). Back to the car we drove to Newhaven, on the landside of bridge, to see the `feeding of the pelicans, spectacular, but highlights were to 2 giant 2m stingrays swimming in the shallows by us. Next to the Rhyll inlet. A lovely walk along low lying mangrove swamp to mouth of the inlet where there were distant Waders Herons, Pelicans and Egrets. After an hour walk we came back to car park and then my daughter took us to 2 more Koalas she had found on another trail. We then drove the quieter upper road, west to ` Nobbies`. An amazing treeless area with an offshore rocky island, at the tip, supporting a Fur seal colony. Distant albatross, shearwater and Gannets were passing. We saw a very tame Wallaby here and an Australian Kestrel .We left via the cliff top road back to the penguin parade getting close to many Cape barren geese and many Wallabies. The parade area was a big grandstand with centre to accommodate 3,800 people looking seawards to watch the penguins arrive.

11th April 2015

Wilson`s promontory is a large national park south east of Inverloch. We left 0900 via the agents office as heating wasn`t working. The promontory took an hour to get to. Normally you have to pay 15 dollars to get in but there was nobody at the entrance. We then drove through the park mountainous, heavily wooded an area still recovering from a severe fire 10 years ago getting close views of Wedge tailed eagle. At the Tidal creek campsite I performed my first Australian BBQ on a communal gas facility. The Crimson rosellas were everywhere and again very tame Red necked wallaby wandering amongst us. Down to the beach where terns and gulls held residence. Later in the afternoon we walked a trail 2 km up the road which was slightly disappointing just seeing the more commoner state birds. However we slowly started leaving the park at 1630 and as we drove back nearing dusk we stopped off at an open entrance to a wildlife walk on the right side of the road. There were 2 tame Wombats, up close,3 Emus and 20 Kangaroos.

12th April 2015

This was a family day trip to Yarragon trip to see relatives. En route we stopped at a promontory lookout, seeing Black yellow tailed cockatoo & a flock of White winged triller.
