Our target species were Stellers sea eagle, Japanese crane & Blakiston`s fish owl. Quite a bit of research had to be done by Jim & myself to put the package together and the trip worked to a dream. The pack ice being at the right place at the right time and the roads getting cleared by snow ploughs at the appropriate times. Certainly talking to other birders the week before was very limited. You have to book accomodation and guides well in advance as this trip is one of the most popular bird photography trips in the world. There wasn`t a big bird list but what quality and I would definately go back. Hokkaido,Japan was certainly cheaper than the UK, the people were very courteous & kind. The customs and procedures made you were definitely in a different country. Drivers allowing you onto a road even though they had the right of way. If planning to drive make sure you have a full international driving licence bought in the UK from our main Post office, without no car. The cost of the whole trip was near £2000.

Trip account

15/02/2015

After taking off from Manchester airport at 0615 (14/02/15) after 1 ¾ hrs we landed at Frankfurt staying 3 hrs here before departed to Hanuda, Tokyo. 12 hrs later we landed in Tokyo,5c very bright with a pollution haze. In the 5 hrs here we had Osprey, Meadow bunting, Peregrine with distant gulls and cormorants. The final leg to Kushiro was 2 hrs we weren’t sure if it was going to take off due to bad weather at our destination and 2 days previous flights had been cancelled due to snow. Our packed plane landed having flown over very rough seas. We landed 1.30 pm and before 1415 we were at the Akan international crane centre marvelling at 70 Japanese cranes and then live fish were put out for 3 Stellar`s sea eagles and 8 White tailed eagles what a start. The roads had amazing snow drifts either side of us but with in 5 minutes we found a Hazel hen up a tree by the road. Then we travelled to the Tsurai crane centre having passed our first Dusky thrush in a farmyard. Snow started falling as the 70 cranes put a marvellous display with a passing Sparrowhawk. We retired to the warm log burning centre and watched from a distance before checking into Hickory wind with Makoto & his wife. Great accommodation, music, guitars & the best Japanese food.

16/02/15

Up early to photograph Marsh tits & Nuthatches coming to food but we couldn’t get out of the farm until the snow plough came to clear the entrance road. However the Cranes and Whooper swans came to us in the surrounding fields. We set off eventually to our first destination a local Ural roost site some 10 minutes walk from the road through deep snow to get to but worth it to get up close to the pair of owls. On the way we had Stellar and a Rough legged buzzard. Then we went to the Ottawa bridge to see the Cranes in the river but had a good bird party of birds with Lesser & Greater spotted woodpeckers, Marsh tit, Nuthatch and a superb male Long tailed Rosefinch. Then we set off to Kushiro to the sea and docks looking for Rosy finch, no luck. We did have Eastern buzzard and another Rough legged. Lunch was an amazing DIY BBQ meal with the cooker in the centre of our table in a reataurant. After this back down to the docks to get up close to Harlequin, Scaup, Pelagic cormorant and many Slaty backed gulls with occasional Vega and one Mew. Then we went west to another viewing area disturbing 4 Dusky thrushes & a male Pine bunting but also getting up close to Mergansers, Grebes & Scoter. Back to another superb meal after seeing Kestrel (a local rarity). We found our second Short eared owl, up close, on the way home.

17/02/2015

We left at 0630 to a decent sunrise 25% blue sky temp 2c and drove looking for Rosy finches. No luck but had superb views over the snow layered marshes and woodland with a distant smoking volcano `Mee akan `which was last active in 2007. The Cranes were by various bridges on the River Kushiro. In the woodland we had perching Steller & White tailed eagles, buzzards. Back for another amazing breakfast of Japanese rice porridge with additives of seaweed, salmon, ginger, washed down by black smoky tea as well as egg roll and scallops. Left Hickory wind centre at 1000 stayed for 2 hours watching the cranes fly in and display at the next door Tsuiri crane centre. Also there were the usual tits and nuthatch plus 3White headed Long tailed tits and at last good views of Brown eared bulbul. 4 Dusky thrushes flew over. Lunch was at a Meso Ramin restaurant in Kushiro en route seeing Teal & Grey heron. The meal consisted of large Rice ravioli which was delicious but the Ramen was served in a 2 litre soup bowl each full of noodles, bean sprouts, various vegetable and a slice of pork. We left continuing to look for Rosy finch to no luck. Finally at 1500 till 1700 we went to another Ural roost site with its mate flying around the wood in the distance plenty of good shots even though the light wasn`t great. At 1700 we threw the towel in and returned to our last night. The supper was amazing a flat griddle on the table used to cook a mixture of cabbage on noodles with egg then bacon on top dressed with red ginger dry seaweed, spring onions, cheese, tempura. Worcester sauce and mayo. The filling was scallops then crab.

18/02/2015

We left Hickory wind at 0800 for Kushiro to collect our hire car after having a superb breakfast. Making sure the roads were clear of snow to Rassau (2 days earlier cars were stranded in snow drifts as the roads were blocked). The sat nav in your car is set to your destinations phone number in. YOU NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVING LICENCE BEFORE TRAVELLING. En route we did some birding at the Notsuke peninsula about 20 Dusky thrushes by the road. Steller`s sea eagles and white tailed on the roadside telegraph poles. Also many Sika deer and 2 playful tame young foxes. At the end of the road by the lighthouse there were a few hundred gulls and flocks of sea duck. The passing auks were too far away to ID. We left here to pass through some very deep snow drifts to get to Washi no yado at 150O hrs. The accommodation is a basic mattress on the floor but our room overlooked the owl feeding area. Our evening meal was at 1700, Crab, kipper, sushi, a pork meal, soup, tea and various other things. We were ready by 1800 as darkness came but people kept on arriving about till 2200 using the other hides & static bus overlooking the stream where they put the live fish bait into a hollow in the snow. The area is floodlit. At 1900 a fox gingerly walked past the gathered throng. 2315 the first Blakistons` fish came and landed on a perch before feeding on fish in the hollow by stream at 2345 a young female arrived and was there for 10 minutes.

19/02/2015

After 4hrs sleep we set off to the fishing boat in the harbour for a 0530 sailing we used “Evergreen”. However the pack ice was right up in the harbour and they spent most of the time ferreting away to try to get to sea. We returned at 0800 having splendoured at the spectacle of a few hundred Stellar & White tailed eagles being fed at close range with a supporting cast of gulls and crows. At 1100 we were birding outside lodge and got the Brown dipper and a Japanese Pygmy woodpecker. Then we drove back to the Notsuke peninsula. There were less birds due to the pack ice up to beach, There was a few hundred Sika and a lonely fox. Arrived back at 1600 before waiting to see the owls, dinner was a tofu with aubergine pepper, sushi selection, fruit, smoked fish, 2 Water snails, a crab/squid mix soup. 1800 the owl watchers started to trickle even after an hour. Some left at Midnight but we managed to see them at 0100am.

20/02/2015

0915 to 1200 another `Evergreen boat trip`. The weather tried to brighten but the snow came from the north all the time. The boat could only get 800 yds past the piers due to the pack ice. Stellers were feeding very close to the boat giving amazing views. The North harbour was best for Sea duck, 50 Harlequin & 6 Scaup. We left Raussu to our final destination, Nemuro, from travelling from13:00 to15:30. With blue sky trying to break through not till Nemuro did the pack ice clear from the sea. Kites were constantly evident and a Finch flock by the road just before Fuhren nature centre consisted of Oriental greenfinch Japanese Bullfinch( surely the sub species will be a species in their own right , Hawfinch & Tree sparrow. We stayed at the East Harbor hotel for the next few nights. A smart hotel & we ended up in the Penthouse suites. Food again very good

21/02/2015

We were met next morning by Kojiniiya, who was to be our guide for the next two days. Invaluable great guy whose first stop was to his friends house 2 miles west of the hotel. Here we had Pygmy woodpecker, White backed woodpecker, Common Redpoll & Brown eared Bulbul on the feeders. Then to Lake Fuhren cottage hotel 1 mile west of nature centre. It was -4c and blue sky with a frozen lake with a good depth of snow (this was to thaw out on our last day). They fed the eagles in excellent light for photography. Amazingly 2 White tailed eagles were airbourne fighting crashed into the side of a building next to us. Then late am we headed off NE to the Rocksand hide, Notsapu which was a sea watching hide looking North viewing the Kuril islands. These are Russian owned but Japan is still in dispute after WW2. In the 7 km straits Military vessels were cruising. From this spectacular view the highlights were Pigeon Guillemot, 2 Spectacled Guillemot. Ancient Murrelet 2 and at last Asian Rosy-finch as well as various sea duck. While we drove to the lighthouse we checked various small harbours, checking out the Gulls & ducks and finding 6 Whooper swan. At Notsappu lighthouse hide it was -8c. We well looked across the straits. With our scopes the unusual thing on the horizon was a Russian church on the island. Here we saw Pacific Diver 3, Black-throated Diver 1, Red-necked Grebe 1, Horned Grebe, Spectacled Guillemot 2, Ancient Murrelet 40, Crested Auklet 1, Least Auklet 6, Asian Rosy-finch 4.

22/02/2015

We were met again early am by Kojiniiya. He took us to Ochiishi harbour there was high cloud -1c south fresh wind. The birds were mostly in the eastern part of harbour mostly sea duck and an ancient murrelet. Then we left port in a deep sea fishing boat for a mini pelagic trip from Ochiishi setting off at 09:30 to midday. The sea state was a 5 with sometimes a 4m swell. Difficult conditions to stand never mind to photograph birds. We went around 2 offshore seabird island colonies seeing a Pacific Diver, Sea duck, Pigeon Guillemot 2, Spectacled Guillemot 8, Ancient Murrelet 12, Least Auklet 1. In the afternoon we then visited Meiji Park hide early pm which is a drive from hotel East harbour (only 8 storey building) Nemuro for 1 mile on 44, come to lights on right Esso garage and yellow big building at junction turn left drive 1 mile. On the left is a small car park with a small building. We parked and walked down through wood on a snow track which was on the left for 300m to the hide near the valley bottom. Seed was in a tub in the hide. Great Spotted Woodpecker 2 & Marsh. Great & Coal Tit, Eurasian Nuthatch, Common Redpoll (Carduelis flammea) with single Oriental Greenfinch, Yellow-throated Bunting & Black-faced Bunting. We then returned to Nosappu head area looking for Red faced Cormorant but to no avail.

23/02/2015

This was our last day and after checking out from our reasonably priced very good hotel we were back to Nosappu head area but there was dense fog at first with occ. Rain, 5c that gradually cleared up at midday. Birds were similar to what we had on previous days. Then to the Ottemato sea watching hide for Rosy finch stayed over an hour but had 40 flying around but they didn`t land. On leaving the hide we met a familiar Japanese birder who couldn`t talk English but via sign language and showing us on his digital camera a Brunnich`s guillemot in a harbour 1km away. We went but didn`t see it but instead took photographs of a Kamcatchka gull on a mini Iceberg. Driving away 15km from the site, Mike was editing his images and suddenly said,` Oh dear me , the bird was jolly hiding behind the iceberg!` or something like. A quick U turn and we found it amongst a large flock of Scaup. Hasty tracks were then made for the airport.
