Comments

We planned to go to Uganda with a friend who was keen to see the Grey Crowned -Crane and many potential new species. Dave and I had birded Kenya before so had targets of the hornbills, Green-breasted Pitta, the Shoebill and the Brown-chested Lapwing. Overall our objective on any trip is to enjoy a range of habitats and maximize the new birds over a reasonable length of time in the country. We contacted Emmy Gongo (emmygongo@yahoo.com or rangerafricasafaris@gmail.com +256772853372) who had taken other friends on a similar trip in 2011. Planning was straight forward and we paid the costs up front, so we did not need to carry too much money on us. Emmy recommended a clock-wise circumnavigation of Uganda including going up to Kidepo NP, where we had over 100 potential new species. At a late stage we were told that our friend could not come so in the end it was just Dave and I. This is an account of the most memorable birds on the trip.

Kampala

We arrived in Entebbe on 24 July travelling from Brisbane via Perth and Johannesburg. Emmy picked us up from the airport and we stayed at the Central Inn, Entebbe. Birding started the next morning with a visit to Mabamba Bay on Lake Victoria on the 25th. We birded the forest edge and took a canoe into the swamp, where we saw our first target, the Shoebill. Three hornbills were also a great start to the trip – Black-and-White-Casqued Hornbill, Crowned Hornbill and African Pied-Hornbill. We went to the Botanical Gardens at Entebbe on the 26th.

Lake Mburo 26-28 July

Our vehicle was a long wheelbase landcruiser with two roof hatches. This was good for the parks where we had to remain in the vehicle. As well as Emmy, we had our driver Vincent, who made up our group. Vincent’s binos were old, fixed focus marine 7 x 50s and very heavy. After the trip, I gave him my cheap 8 x 40s that I had bought at the Johannesburg airport after leaving my Swarovski EL 10 x 42s in the Brisbane airport. The vegetation of open savannah allowed good visibility from the car and we were very happy to see Brown-chested Lapwing, which had recently arrived as it was another target. We also had great views of many Grey Crowned-Cranes.

Mgahinga and Bwindi impenetrable forest NPs 28 July - 5 Aug

From Mburo, we drove south-west towards the Rwanda border. We stayed the first night at Kisoro, Mgahinga arriving after dark, and hauled out all our warm clothes it was amazingly cold. Great mountain views were enjoyed while looking for the Albertine Rift Valley endemics. Birds in this area included Fraser’s Eagle-Owl, African Wood-Owl, Dusky Crimson-wing and Ruwenzori Turaco. From there, we moved north to Bwindi and stayed four nights at Ruhija. We found the walk to and from Byodoro swamp not too bad. We saw the Grauer’s Scrub-Warbler on the edge of the lake. The Grauer’s Broadbill had finished nesting, but we were lucky to find it in a tree close to the nest. We stayed at Broadbill Forest Camp, Ruhija where we were snug at night with our hot water bottles. The garden held the Three-horned Chamelon and Montane Nightjar. The Gorilla tracking took a full morning and we hired a porter to carry the back pack. This puts money back into the local community. It was an interesting experience and involved many people to keep all the customers safe and with the necessary photo opportunities.

We had afternoon rain at Buhoma where we were looking for the Short-tailed Warbler and needed to shelter for an hour waiting for the rain to stop. The next day we went back again, paying for another day in the park and were lucky to see the warbler in the morning. The lodge here – Bwindi View bandas was pleasant with very helpful staff.

Queen Elizabeth National Park 5 – 7 Aug

We stayed at the Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge and caught up with several waders in the crater lakes and grasslands, including Water Thick-knee, Spur-winged Plover, Senegal Lapwing, Crowned Lapwing, Wattled Lapwing, Kittlitz’s Plover, Three-banded Plover and Brown-chested Lapwing. A further photo opportunity provided for the Brown-chested Lapwing. We also had a great view of a Pearl-spotted Owlet.

Kibale and Semliki 7 Aug – 11 Aug

Kibale is the place for the Green-breasted Pitta and Chimpanzees. We tried for the Pitta on two mornings and got a glimpse on the second morning but not well enough for a tick. We could see the branch where it was jumping and displaying and we could see its bill. A scout around the area for rest of the day did not succeed in relocating it so maybe we had left it too late in the season. Our accommodation was the Kibale Forest Lodge and we then moved to Tooro Resort, Fort Portal arriving quite late. Always enjoy seeing the Great Blue Turaco, a beautiful bird.
In order to visit Semiliki National Park we needed a cook to come from Broadbill Camp to prepare our meals at our accommodation - UWA Bandas. In the evenings, we looked for the Nkurengu Rail with the ranger and again in the early morning but dipped despite hearing at least two birds in separate areas. On the walks in Semliki, we found it was difficult to get on to the Yellow-Throated Nicator, The birds calls loudly and responds well to the taped call, however it becomes too excited and shoots around in the canopy. A quick view is all you get.

Budongo 12 – 13 Aug

We stayed at the New Court Hotel in Masindi where we saw Swamp Nightjar and walked the Royal Mile Road in Budongo forest. Illegal burning of the Iron wood trees for charcoal was occurring and we understood that this was despite the presence of forestry officers. I finally caught up with Fire-crested Alethe, which had been eluding me up until then. We spent some time quietly observing a group of Nahan’s Francolin, had the African Pygmy-Kingfisher and Dwarf Kingfisher in the telescope and succeeded in seeing Ituri Batis.

Murchison Falls 13 – 16 Aug

We had views of two more Shoebills in the Nile delta during this part of the trip, and we experienced tetse flies for the first time on the road into Murchison Falls National Park. At a swamp near Masindi, Emmy with great skill attracted the Red-chested Flufftail to cross a gap he had made in the grass where we had our binos ready focused. While at Murchison, we stayed in comfortable tents at Pakuba Resort, Fort Murchison. The vegetation was green from recent rains and we had great views of giraffes and elephants. It took a while but we did find Black-bellied Bustard in the grassland and located the Pennant-winged Nightjar on the park roads. There was plenty of opportunity to try to sort out the different weavers - would I be competent by the end of the trip? We had a relaxing boat ride to the base of the falls, which are worth a visit to see the sheer volume of water falling through the gap in the cliffs.

Kidepo and Moroto 18 - 20 Aug

We began the road trip to Kidepo Valley National Park on the 16th over-nighting in Acholi Inn. Along the way we took a couple of attempts to see the White-crested Turaco, which together with the Hartlaub’s Turaco (seen at Mt Elgon) were my most memorable birds of the trip. When we arrived at Kidepo, we found that our booked bandas at the UWA Bandas had been given to others as we had arrived after 6 pm. Luckily, Emmy knew one of the guides at very expensive Apoka Safari Lodge up the hill and we stayed the first night in luxury. We missed the Hemprich’s Hornbill along the hills south of the park. We will just have to keep it for another African trip. At least we had great views of the Northern Ground-Hornbill as some compensation. Our park guide/guard helped us to locate the Karamoja Apalis and he was happy to see a Three-banded Courser on the road, which was a new bird for him. From Kidepo, we travelled south through the Karamoja region towards Moroto. This was interesting with quite a rocky desert landscape. We stopped for petrol in a small town where they pumped the petrol by hand as there was no electricity. The dry landscape added many new birds to the list including Cinnamon-breasted Bunting, Steel-blue Whydah and Straw-tailed Whydah in breeding plumage!

In Moroto, we stayed at the Mt Moroto hotel where UN vehicles were the dominant vehicle in the carpark. It was slow going south from here to get to Mt Elgon NP. Trucks had made deep wheel ruts following rain and the road was still flooded at one point and came over the bonnet during one river crossing. Clearly we wouldn’t have wanted to have tried to get through a day earlier.

Mount Elgon 21 Aug

We stayed in the Sipi Falls resort enjoying the view out to the falls. We walked the main track up Mount Elgon till about lunch time, where we saw a White-tailed Crested-Flycatcher, very distinctive in its flight behaviour.

Kampala 22 -23 Aug

From Mt Elgon we drove south-east towards Jinja and visited the Mabira Forest in central Uganda. This is an isolated patch of forest where we had excellent views of a White-spotted Flufftail. We stayed at the Nile Anchor Palace, Jinja before driving back to Entebbe for our last night, then flying out early on August 24th.
