Buff-winged Starfrontlet

The Galapagos Islands were on my bucket list, and I asked by old college roomie to join me. We hadn't seen each other for more than thirty years. We had been biology students together, and I really wanted at least one more grand field trip together. Since Bob is a professional entomologist, I spent some time looking at other than avian species for a change.

Some internet searching led me serendipitiously to Pululahua Ecolodge (http://www.pululahuahostal.com) and Renato Espinosa (info@pululahuahostal.com), who organized a thorough trip for us across northeast Ecuador and then over to the Galapagos. Renato is very personable and extremely helpful, and he became a good friend over the course of our trip. Educated in the US and an active environmentalist, Renato also gave us a full and lucid account of Ecuadorian biogeography, history and socio-politics along the way. I cannot recommend him highly enough as a guide, organizer and companion.

With Renato's comfortable lodge near Quito as an initial base of operations, we first hopped over to the western side of the Andes to Yanacocha and environs for a day, and then headed back east all the way from the paramo of Antisana National Park down to the Amazonian tropics of the Dayano Huaorani Reserve and Yasuni National Park. Renato is an outstanding birder and tactician, and he set up a slick itinerary that took us to virtually the whole range of available habitats in that quarter of the country, consequently netting us over 350 species for the week.

Some descriptive detail of locations:

11/16 Antisana National Park and Guango Lodge, Cosanga, Napo Province.

Guango Lodge is surrounded by 180 hectares of humid temperate forest at an elevation of 2700 meters on Ecuador's eastern slopes. Guango is well known to birders for the 15 species of hummingbirds. The nearby river has Torrent Ducks.

11/17 Cabañas San Isidro and Guacamayo Ridge, Cosanga, Napo Province

San Isidro is situated at about 2050 meters. Of all of the known sites fro Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, the small congregation at San Isidro's mating lek (most active Oct-Mar) is the most easily accessible. San Isidro is at one of the westernmost headwaters of the Amazon basin in a zone still mostly blanketed by extensive humid forest.

11/18 Sumaco Biosphere Reserve

The Sumaco Volcano (3900 m) is a rather isolated peak lying to the east of the main Andean Mountain Range. Moist broadleaf forest with an abundance of palms is the major vegetation type. The area includes well-preserved corridors of habitats from the lowlands to above tree line. The Sumaco Biosphere Reserve extends from highly humid tropical forests at 600 meters, through tropical highlands, and up to 3732 meters, where Andean paramo prevails.

11/19 & 11/20 Jatun Sacha Reserve

The Jatun Sacha Biological Station includes a reserve of 2000 hectares, of which 70% is primary forest and the remainder is secondary growth. It is located on the southern bank of the Upper Napo River, at an altitude of 450 meters. The life zone protected by the reserve is Tropical Wet Forest.

11/21 & 11/22 Gareno Lodge

Gareno Lodge is operated in conjunction with the Dayano Huaorani Community. It is located in the section farthest west on the 716,000 hectare Huarorani Reserve, which borders on the 982,000 hectare Yasuní National Park. The birding area is located between 300 m and 400 m. Gareno Lodge is one of the few easily accessible Amazonian rolling hills terra firme forest sites in Ecuador.

After fighting the Amazonian gnats (quite mysteriously there were no mosquitoes or leeches at all), we were ready to travel on to Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal Islands, and Renato helped us to every single endemic finch available on those islands. According to locals, El Nino was causing more irregular rain, but we experienced little hindrance: the coasts were for the most part dry though cloudy, while light rain misted down when we ascended the island volcanoes.

I was surprised that the Galapagos are also popular as a resort among young backpackers, so there are many comfortable little hotels, restaurants and clubs. Fortunately, these are clustered around the towns and beaches, while many of the birds are safely inland. The tortoise farms and other conservation facilities are also of interest.

Ecuador is a beautiful country of amazing contrasts, and much of its infrastructure is quite modern. I was particularly impressed with the wide use of solar power and LED lighting. Food on the road was simple but wholesome, and while we did drink bottled water, we ate freely of the fine fresh fruits and salads throughout the trip, and I had no shots and took no preventive medicines.
