I arranged a birdtour of NE Brazil with the renowned Ciro Albano from Sept 22 to Oct 12. I wanted to extend this to south of Sao Paulo where I had never been before so I emailed the few recommended Brazilian guides who specialise in this area but could not get any commitment to take us until I tried Adrian Rupp. He agreed to do it at a reasonable price and said he could show us all the birds I hoped to see. We agreed on a 14 day itinerary and four of my friends signed up. The only drawback was that with having to go in October (due to Ciro’s availability in the NE) we were a little early to see the migrant seedeaters, 4 of which I needed, as they arrive in SE Brazil in November. Adrian said there was a chance that some might be seen in late Oct, but in the event we were unlucky. We did change the final part of the itinerary, a long drive to the far south to see Yellow Cardinal at its only Brazilian site, deciding it was not worth spending so much time in the bus, better to be birding in wetlands near to Porto Alegre where we would be starting our flights back home.

Adrian ran the trip very well, showing great knowledge of all the birds, their songs and calls and where they were to be found. We succeeded in seeing nearly all the specialities, the most notable for me being: Black-fronted Piping-Guan, Red-and-white Crake, Red-tailed Parrot, Blue-bellied Parrot, Rusty-barred Owl, Long-trained and Sickle-winged Nightjars, Purple-crested Plovercrest, Festive Coquette, Mottled Piculet, Straight-billed Reedhaunter, White-bearded Antshrike, Parana and Sao Paulo Antwrens, Spotted Bamboowren, Planalto Tapaculo, nesting Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, Restinga Tyrannulet, Kaempfer's Tody-Tyrant, Russet-winged Spadebill, Black-and-white Monjita, Eastern Slaty Thrush, Black-backed and Chestnut-backed Tanagers and Black-legged Dacnis.

The two parrots were difficult but we saw them well in the end. We missed Buff-fronted Owl (again!), Silky-tailed Nightjar, Spot-winged Wood-quail (easy according to Ciro!) and Helmeted Woodpecker, needed by the others, but not much else of note. We travelled in a bus/coach - roomy but slower than Ciro in his car, and with fairly poor visibility when travelling. We had some rain, though not as bad as was forecast towards the end of the trip.

Our team of five Brits and Adrian worked very well, with no problems at all, ensuring that this, along with the earlier part in the Northeast, was one of the best trips I have ever done. I have no hesitation in recommending Adrian as an excellent guide for trips to Southern Brazil.

This trip report was written by me with help from Duncan Brooks and Nick Preston.

The internal flight could not land at Sao Paulo, supposedly because the runways were flooded due to heavy rain. We finished up having to be bused to SP airport from a small airport nearly 2 hours drive away, so we only had an hour to check in instead of the 7 hours we should have had, and only just made the London flight!
