The main goal of the trip was to find 21 Peruvian endemics of Lawrence's "wish list". We planned 7 days travelling between the regions of Cajamarca and Amazonas. Tour started near the city of Cajamarca, then we moved to Celendín, Balzas, Barro Negro pass, Leymebamba, Kuelap, San Lorenzo crest, Fundo Alto Nieva, Huembo, and then to the Jaen airport. After that we returned to Cajamarca via Leymebamba.
We ended the tour with 28 endemics, and a total of 178 species.

Itinerary
Day 1. August 13 2018. El Chuco Alto. Cajamarca
Morning of the first day we went to El Chuco Alto, some 30 minutes from the city of Cajamarca, where we had our first targeted endemics: Great Spinetail (we actually saw 6 birds !), and Buff-bridled Inca-Finch (also 6 birds !). Additionally, we had some more endemics: Spot-throated Hummingbird, Black-necked Woodpecker, White-rumped Black-Tyrant, and Marañon Gnatcatcher.
By mid-morning we went to the Rio Chonta valley, having great views of Grey-bellied Comet. We also found Black Metaltail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, and Baron’s Spinetail.
In the afternoon we visited Quelluacocha lake on our way to la Masma. At the lake we had Striated Earthcreeper. Then we moved to La Masma, the only known place where Plain-tailed Warbling-finch is easy to find. We had a couple of this beautiful endemic species. We spent the night in the city of Cajamarca.
Day 2. August 14 2018. El Gavilan pass and western slope of the Marañon valley. Cajamarca
Early in the morning we went to El Gavilan mountain pass, 25 minutes from the city centre. Our target here was Unicolored Tapaculo, who showed up quite fast but not for too long (just a few secs).
Then we moved to a nearby point for Rufous-backed Inca-Finch. Another success! we found two birds in a small ravine.
Before noon we were on our way towards the city of Celendín. We stopped near La Encañada for Rufous-breasted Brush-Finch but without success.
At noon we topped 6 Km before the town of Cruz Conga, at a small patch of trees ns bushes, here we found a pair of vocalizing Rufous Antpitta ssp. Cajamarca, and a Rainbow Starfrontlet.
Further on we stopped near Quillimbash and we were lucky to have a glimpse of Rufous-eared Brush-finch.
Late in the afternoon we entered the western slope of the Marañon valley. First we explored the road to El Utco, where we had great views of Chestnut-backed Thornbird. Then we moved to El Limon, where we looked for Grey-winged Inca-Finch for a while, the bird finally showed up when it was almost dark. We also saw a pair of Buff-bellied Tanagers.
We spent the night in the city of Celendín.
Day 3. August 15 2018. Balzas, road to Leymebamba, Abra Barro Negro. Amazonas
We leaved Celendín very early in the morning in order to get to the Marañon river early enough to catch our today’s targets. Before crossing the river, we had our first sights of Marañon Pigeons perching on a tree by the river. After crossing the bridge, we went to the town of Balzas were we had good views of Yellow-faced Parrotlets. Six Yellow-tailed Orioles posed for a perfect picture, and we were surprised by some White-tipped Swifts flying above our heads.
Then we drove up the mountains towards Leymebamba. First stop was at a bamboo patch below the town of Achupas. Here we had Purple-throated Sunangel, Grey-browed Brush-Finch, and good views of Blackish Tapaculo.
Above Achupas, the humid forest was good for Russet-mantled Softtail, but the views were not good enough, so we kept trying along the road but without success.
By noon we were just below the Abra Barro Negro pass, here we found our next endemic: Neblina Tapaculo.
After the pass, we spent more than two hours looking for Neblina. Our driver saw one, but not the clients. In the same area we had good views of a Rufous Antpitta ssp. Obscura, singing in the bushes. We also heard a distant White-chinned Thistletail. The weather was bad (mist and wind) so we decided to return to this site the next morning.
As we drove down the road towards Leymebamba, we stopped a couple of times looking for Russet-mantled Softtail, Large-footed Tapaculo, but without success. Finally, we had good views of Rufous-breasted (Leymebamba) Antpitta in the lower part of the mountains, not far from the town of Leymebamba. We spent the night in Leymebamba.
Day 4. August 16 2018. Abra Barro Negro, road to Leymebamba, road between Leymebamba and Kuelap. Amazonas
This morning we went back to the Abra Barro Negro area since we missed several important birds yesterday. First stop was below the pass were we found (after about 2 hours of patience!) Neblina Metaltail. In this same area we had good views of Sword-billed Hummingbird, and Coppery-naped Puffleg. Several Scarlet-bellied Mountain-tanagers were also in the area.
We tried several times for Russet-mantled Softtail, Large-footed Tapaculo but without success, the birds were silent and did not respond to our taping.
It was getting late so we decided to move on, the plan was to be at Kuelap early enough for the clients to see the archaeological site. Before Kuelap we stopped near the town of El Tingo Viejo, where we had good views of Marañon Crescentchest. After visiting Kuelap we moved to the town of Pedro Ruiz to spend the night.
Day 5. August 17 2018. San Lorenzo crest, Fundo Alto Nieva reserve. Amazonas
This was the hardest hiking day of the trip. At a slow pace we climbed to the San Lorenzo mountain crest for about two hours. At the first stop we looked for large-footed Tapaculo without success. Peter decided to spend the morning there hoping the bird would show up at any time. The other walked up the hill for another hour looking for Pale-billed Antpitta. Our efforts were vain, the bird did not vocalize during the hole time we were in the mountain. We tried at several known places for the Antpitta but had not results. Nevertheless, we had good views of Plain-tailed Wren, Barred Fruiteater, Peruvian Citrine Warbler, White-collared Jay; and had a mixed species flock with Russet-mantled Softtail, White-banded and White-throated Tyrannulets, Blue-backed Conebill, and other species.
After eight hours of searching for the Pale-billed Antpitta, we gave up and return to the car. We wanted to be at Fundo Alto Nieva before 04:00 PM to have a chance to see Ochre-fronted Antpitta coming to the feeders.
We arrived to Fundo Alto Nieva just in time to see the Antpittas. We walked for about 20 minutes up a hill and to the feeding station. It took about 30 minutes to the bird to show up, we had good views of a female Ochre-fronted Antpitta.
We decided to wait until it gets dark to look for owls along the trail. We first tried for Long-whiskered Owlet, but the bird was nor vocalizing. Things went better with a pair of Cinnamon Screech-Owls that show up very well. We spend the night at Fundo Alto Nieva.
Day 6. August 18 2018. Fundo Alto Nieva reserve. Amazonas
In the morning we walked up a hill to another Antpitta feeding spot. Here we had really good views of Rusty-tinged Antpitta. On our way backed we had good, but brief, views of Rufous-vented Tapaculo.
After breakfast we took another trail and had good sights of Cinnamon-breasted Tody-tyrant, Spotted Barbtail, and Bar-winged Wood-wren.
Then we went to the Abra Patricia pass, looking for Lulu’s (Johnson’s) Tody-Flycatcher, but without success. Nevertheless, in the area we had good views of White-tailed Tyrannulet, Green-and-black Fruiteater, and Yellow-throated Tanager. On our way back we stopped at the Royal Sunangel spot and found one male perched on a bush above the road.
By noon we were driving down the road on our way to El Afluente. Along the road we were looking for Speckle-chested Piculet, but had no success. Instead we had good views of Vermilion Tanager and a female Masked Trogon.
At El Afluente, we went to La Llanteria hummingbird feeders, were we had great views of Ecuadorian Piedtail and Violet-headed Hummingbird. The day was sunny and hot, with very few bird activity, so we decided to drive back to Fundo Alto Nieva.
In the afternoon we visited the hummingbird feeders at Fundo Alto Nieva. The highlights were Long-tailed Sylph, Buff-thighed Puffleg, and Botted Racket-tail.
Then we went walk along the road outside Fundo Alto Nieva. We walked for about one Kilometre, and had good views of Andean Solitaire, Glossy-black Thrush, Deep-blue Flowerpiercer, Beryl-spangled and Flame-faced Tanagers. We spend the night at Fundo Alto Nieva.
Day 7. August 19 2018. Fundo Alto Nieva to Jaén airport. Amazonas
Final day of the trip. We leaved early to have time to look for the endemics we still needed.
The first stop was at the Abra Patricia pass, and this time we had the chance to see two Lulu’s (Johnson’s) Tody-Flycatcher. We did not spend much time in the area, and drove to Huembo to look for Speckle-chested Piculet, sadly we did not success either. Instead we had great views of Northern Rufous-capped Antshrike.
We tried for the Piculet again near the town of Pedro Ruiz, and failed again. Unfortunately, the bird did not show in this trip. After lunch we drove straight to the airport.
