Comments

I had visited Northern Peru back in 2000. Times change and since then so many places have opened up: new reserves and lodges, better roads and above all much more knowledge about distribution of species and new sites, or just better coverage of old sites. All this meant it was time to return and catch up with many species I had missed first time round or never really had a chance with.

Although the word ‘ mythical ` has become a massive birding cliché and marketing ploy ( and ..er….what on earth does ‘near-mythical `mean !) species such as Long-whiskered Owlet and White-masked Antbird really did deserve that epithet; the latter not having been seen between its discovery in 1937 and its rediscovery in 2001 with the former not being seen in life after its discovery in mist nets in 1976 until 2007. Combine this with the discovery of a new species of antbird, and a new site for Scarlet-banded Barbet at Plataforma and the allure became irresistible.

My old friend from Cusco, Juvenal Ccahuana Mirano (Juve) with whom I had travelled around Northern Peru in 2000 and many other sites in Peru since, has now set himself up as driver/guide with a comfortable 4x4 and has over 20 years of experience of birding and driving around the whole of Peru. It was time to reunite and set up an itinerary. I contacted Chris, Rich and Nick and all were eager to share the trip; Chris and Nick having done varying amounts of the Northern Peru circuit before, with Rich a Northern Peru virgin!

We chose June/July as the most convenient time for all to travel and being outside the rainy season we hoped for decent weather. In the event this choice proved well founded and we were blessed with the best possible weather throughout. Very little rain meant few real problems with the road to Plataforma, where the mud can be a nightmare, and excellent nocturnal conditions at Alto Nieva which meant optimal chances for the Owlet.

The itinerary was a compromise. Since we had wanted to go for White-masked Antbird at San Lorenzo, which required 4 days in all, we had to eschew the Leymebamba – Cajamarca circuit given our time constraints. This ruled out certain endemics such as Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Grey-bellied Comet, Purple-backed Sunbeam and Great Spinetail amongst others. Nonetheless the trip was a resounding success with nearly all our target species found and then some!

Highlights included, in no particular order; White-masked Antbird, Long-whiskered Owlet, Scarlet-banded Barbet, Cordillera Azul Antbird, Ochre-fronted, Pale-billed, Rusty-tinged and ‘Leymebamba` Antpittas, White-browed Guan, Russet-bellied and Maranon Spinetails, Marvellous Spatuletail, Little Woodstar, Black-bellied Thorntail, Royal Sunangel, Mountain Avocetbill, Piura Chat-tyrant, Tumbes Tyrant, Tumbes Swallow, Maranon and Elegant Crescentchests, Stygian Owl, Cinnamon, Peruvian and Foothill Screech Owls, Cinnamon-breasted Tody-tyrant, Lulu’s Tody-flycatcher, Henna-hooded and Rufous-necked Foliage-gleaners, Scarlet-breasted, Fiery-throated and Scaled Fruiteaters, Painted and Jet Manakins, Dotted and Straw-backed Tanagers, Plumbeous Euphonia, Peruvian Plantcutter, Lunulated and White-plumed Antbirds, Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, Yellow-throated Spadebill, Black-necked Red Cotinga, Paint-billed, Grey-breasted, Rufous-sided and Black-banded Crakes and many more.

The success of the trip was in no small part due to the experience and knowledge of Juve. We wasted little time because we had a clear set of target species and Juve either knew exactly where to find them himself or knew someone who could! Because he has excellent relations with all the most important people at each site, with the sole exception of San Lorenzo which was a new site for even him, gaining access or getting all the latest gen was never an issue. The whole trip ran as smooth as silk. We can’t recommend Juve highly enough and given his extremely reasonable rates serious independent birders who don’t want to hire their own vehicle or waste time with public transport (not always even available to get to many sites) should definitely consider using his services. Juve can be contacted by e-mail at juve82@hotmail.com or on Facebook. It should be pointed out that Juve has limited spoken English, although this in no way affects his ability to find the birds, but is always able to respond to messages. In the event of any problems with communications please contact me at michaelcatsis@live.co.uk .

The itinerary we followed is listed below. We had a flexible approach where possible and moved on when we had seen our targets at any particular site. The only places where we could not do this were at Alto Nieva where it was necessary to book in advance, Plataforma where it is necessary to arrange for a vehicle beforehand to get you to Flor de Café and to secure rooms in the only currently available hostel and at San Lorenzo where we needed to arrange for a guide.

Costs

Juve charged us a very reasonable $150 per diem which included his services and the use of his vehicle and fuel. We also paid for him to drive up to Trujillo to meet us (a three day trip) and for him to drive home from Tarapoto at the end of the trip.We paid for all lodging, daily food ( mostly we had breakfast and lunch in the field and used restaurants in the evenings), guides and entrance fees where necessary for all of us, single flights from Lima to Trujillo (£98.60 each) at the beginning of the trip to meet up with Juve, single flights from Tarapoto to Lima (£93.70) at the end of the trip and return flights to San Lorenzo from Yurimaguas ( roughly £85 each on the way out because we had to charter the plane and around £52 on the return leg because we booked it …but beware it is like a taxi service, whoever gets to the airport first gets onto the plane first !). Return flights direct from Gatwick to Lima were £676 and in country costs were around £2100 each including the internal flights (although this varied individually as some of us ate and drank more than others and occasionally single rooms were used).

All in all then the bill came to around £2900 all in, each. I’m sure it could be done cheaper if you hired your own vehicle or if you had the time to do it all by bus. However, to have the services of someone who knows the birding sites like the back of their hand and not to have the anxiety of looking after a hired vehicle its surely worth the cost. Given the success of the trip and comparing these costs with the established companies, anything up to £5000 for a similar itinerary without international airfares, the trip was a huge bargain.

Acknowledgements

Without the help of local people it is impossible for visiting birders to be successful in the limited time they usually have at their disposal, and we were no different. We would like to thank the following people for their help in accessing habitat or private reserves, in providing information on site, in guiding us around a particular reserve or in showing us particular species.

Lino Rico at Quebrada El Limon who has played a major role in monitoring and protecting the population of White-winged Guans there, Kenny Rodriguez and Wilmer Montenegro at Fundacion Alto Nieva, Norbil Becerra at the Reserva Arena Blanca, Hilder Delgado at Reserva Aconabikh, Roger Bedoja at San Lorenzo, Darwin Vega, who drove us fearlessly and expertly up to Plataforma and Eugenio and Olga and their family who guided us and looked after us at Plataforma. MC would also like to thank Rob Williams for some helpful notes on sites for various Tumbesian endemics. Last but not least we all wish to thank Juvenal Ccahuana Mirano for his expert guidance and excellent and well organised service throughout.
