Recently, the country of Colombia made it easier for tourists from the United States to enter. Having received the necessary vaccinations against Covid, I decided to end my long work haul (2 years without rest), and to take a much needed vacation abroad. In order to fly from Newark to Bogota I only needed to fill out a short and easy Colombian Check-Mig form, and to print it out to show to my airline when boarding. I also needed my paper card showing that I had been vaccinated, but that was something I already had. On the return trip, I got a very quick and easy Antigen Test at the Bogota Airport (the results of which were available within 30 minutes, for 140,000 Colombian Pesos). Flight considerations were that simple. My wife and brother, both birders, joined me on the trip, which was a real pleasure, considering that shared experiences increase the quality of almost any activity, especially travel.

Because transportation in the Andes was a bit of an unknown to us, and because we really hadn't studied sufficiently the potential birding locations, we decided to get local guides. We had also considered some well-known international birding companies, but they were too expensive for us. In the end, we chose Multicolor Birding Tours, a Colombian-based company that provided an incredibly competent birding guide who was also a driver, a man by the name of Juan Lopez Z - both bird guide and driver in one person. The rate was very reasonable. We also spiced it up a bit by using another local company, Bogota Birding, for the second half of the trip. The guide, Oswaldo Cortes, was friendly and knowledgeable. In turn, he used another local guide, Balmes Mabel, in the Bahia Solano area, who was also good with local birds. We saw a lot of birds, but we also got to experience life in the three main ranges of the Colombian Andes: eastern, central, and western. To end the tour we spent some time, as indicated, on the Pacific Coast in the Choco region around Bahia Solano. All of the areas we visited seemed safe to us, though just 20 years ago that would have been a different story.

The hikes were sometimes challenging or muddy, but they were spectacular in terms of views/locations. Montezuma Road had incredible vistas, for instance. And Chestnut-capped Piha reserve had the most idyllic waterfall with a natural pool I have ever seen. Bahia Solano had gorgeous coastline. On one occasion, adventure dictated that we were stranded at sea in a small boat returning from Utria National Park. I would like to thank the Lord for answered prayer, as we were rescued within an hour or two of the boat's motor failure.

Our itinerary included Otun Quimbaya, Montezuma Road, Rio Blanco, Yellow-eared Parrot Reserve, below Los Nevados, Rio Claro, Chestnut-capped Piha Reserve, and the Bahia Solano area. We were quite happy (to say the least) that we saw 9 kinds of antpittas very well, and we heard an additional 6 kinds. In addition to birds, we experienced a humpback whale jumping completely out of the water three times, an adorable pair of kinkajous, Pale-footed Tamarins and other monkeys, sloths, a sea snake, sea turtles, etc.

I decided to make a list of the top 40 birds of the tour and to present this prior to the longer trip list. Although well-known international birding companies can get longer total lists on some tours, our list was plenty long for us and provided so many enjoyable birds that we were more than satisfied.
