We met at the SE edge of Saskatoon (Saskatchewan's largest city) at 8 AM.

We first made a short stop at the south end of Blackstrap Lake where we were treated to views of American White Pelicans roosting up close plus a dozen Yellow-headed Blackbirds. At a nearby location, we heard the sweet descending song of a Sprague's Pipit flying high overhead.

At the main access point to Chaplin Lake, we found 8 Eared Grebes plus many ducks and shorebirds including 40 Northern Shoveler, 150 American Avocets, 300 Sanderling and 50 Wilson's Phalaropes.

Two rare Piping Plovers were found at another lakeshore stop along with 2 Baird's Sandpipers, 1 White-rumped Sandpiper and 21 Marbled Godwit. Viewing the prairie grassland on the opposite side of road produced 2 Upland Sandpipers, 4 Baird's Sparrow, a Chestnut-collared Longspur and a Common Nighthawk.

Travelling west, we found a Ferruginous Hawk nest with 3 young plus a second nest with an adult on it.

At Reed Lake, we found 2 more Piping Plover plus a Common Tern and over 100 American Avocets.

On our drive back home through the Vermillion Hills, we found a Loggerhead Shrike perched near the road.
