Overview

This private birding tour for Chuck visited Sarawak state in Borneo, Malaysia. It started in Kuching on the 16th of August 2022 and finished back there on the 22nd of August 2022. The main aim of the tour was to find two species belonging to monotypic families, Rail-babbler and Crested Jayshrike.

After Chuck joined our July 2022 Sulawesi and Halmahera tour (report here) and August 2022 West Papua tour (report here) these were the last two families he required to have recorded all of the families in the world and would represent an amazing achievement.

Our birding focused on two areas near Kuching – the capital city of Sarawak state. Our first stop was at the wonderful Kubah National Park which contains some excellent forest patches.

Our second stop, and main base for the tour, was the picturesque and remote Borneo Highlands Resort (an area closed off for over two years due to Covid and in a state of flux as to what is going to happen to it going forward). This site sits right along the Malaysia-Indonesia border and offers some absolutely brilliant birding, along with breathtaking views. Although we had two big (and rather tough) targets to find there was also loads of other great birds on offer at these two locations, and so we also paid due attention to those as time permitted. There are a lot of unresolved taxonomical issues in Borneo and so we were keen to record as many of the interesting and localized subspecies as possible for future “armchair ticks”, there are probably quite a few coming!

We recorded 169 species on the tour including our two main targets, Rail-babbler and Crested Jayshrike, both of which showed extremely well. We also found several other great species, such as Blue-banded Pitta, Bornean Frogmouth, Oriental Bay Owl, Barred Eagle-Owl, Reddish Scops Owl, Sunda Scops Owl, Mountain Serpent Eagle, Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle, Bornean Barbet, Chestnut-naped Forktail, Rufous-collared Kingfisher, White-crowned Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Diard’s Trogon, Red-naped Trogon, Scarlet-rumped Trogon, Black-and-red Broadbill, Black-and-yellow Broadbill, Banded Broadbill, Green Broadbill, Bornean Black Magpie, Dayak Blue Flycatcher, Bornean Blue Flycatcher, Pygmy White-eye, Chestnut-crested Yuhina, White-bellied Erpornis (a talked about potential new monotypic family), Bornean Black-capped Babbler, Grey-hooded Babbler, Grey-bellied Bulbul, Scaly-breasted Bulbul, Charlotte’s Bulbul, Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker, Scarlet-breasted Flowerpecker, Greater Green Leafbird, and Dusky Munia.

Of the interesting subspecies referred to above, we found many, including (Bornean/Black-faced) Banded Kingfisher, (Western/Asian) Hooded Pitta, Rusty-breasted (Sunda Brush) Cuckoo, Golden-whiskered (Golden-faced) Barbet, Blue-eared (Black-eared) Barbet, Cinereous (Green-winged) Bulbul, Short-tailed (Glissando) Babbler, Grey-throated (Bornean Mountain) Babbler, (Bornean) Moustached Babbler, Horsfield’s (Salvadori’s) Babbler, Eye-browed (Whitehead’s) Wren-Babbler, and Brown (Bornean) Fulvetta, to name a few.

We also found several species of small mammals, reptiles, interesting insects, and other taxa during this short Borneo bird tour. The trip lists for birds and everything else we identified follows the report.

Detailed Report

Day 1, 16th August 2022. Arrival in Kuching, Sarawak

An arrival day in Kuching, Sarawak, Borneo. We enjoyed our welcome dinner together soaking in views of Kuching River, as we prepared for an exciting week of birding in Borneo.

Day 2, 17th August 2022. Birding in Kubah National Park area

We left the city of Kuching behind and drove the short distance to the Kubah National Park area. The trail we took was a gentle and gradual climb, but we didn’t really notice it as we were busy soaking in all of the incredible birds one after the other all morning. We came across a flowering tree that attracted Yellow-eared Spiderhunter, Spectacled Spiderhunter, Grey-breasted Spiderhunter, and Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. Nearby, we found Dusky Munia, Green Iora, Charlotte’s Bulbul, Rufous Woodpecker, Common Hill Myna, and Rufous-tailed Tailorbird. Walking through the forest we added Dark-throated Oriole, Barred Eagle-Owl, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Lesser Cuckooshrike, Scarlet Minivet, and the best bird of the morning, the simply spectacular Blue-banded Pitta.

Birds were active all morning and it was tough to drag ourselves away from the site. Chestnut-breasted Malkoha, Raffles’s Malkoha, Violet Cuckoo, Banded Bay Cuckoo, (Bornean/Black-faced) Banded Kingfisher, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Grey-and-buff Woodpecker, Rufous-winged Philentoma, Maroon-breasted Philentoma, Bornean Black-capped Babbler, Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker, Black-and-yellow Broadbill, Banded Broadbill, and Asian Fairy-bluebird all vied for our attention.

We had a fair bit of rain in the afternoon which prevented us from doing any more birding during daylight hours, but a walk in the evening provided some interesting geckos and other wildlife, as well as a fantastic close sighting of Oriental Bay Owl, with a supporting cast of Barred Eagle-Owl and Sunda Scops Owl. What an incredible day of birding in Sarawak.

Day 3, 18th August 2022. Birding in Kubah National Park area and travel to, then birding, at Borneo Highlands Resort

Some pre-breakfast birding saw us finding Hooded Pitta, Crimson Sunbird, Dark-throated Oriole, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Large-tailed Nightjar, and a few other species. Some roadside birding while we ate breakfast was super productive. Our first Crested Jayshrike was picked up but frustratingly eluded Chuck, so we needed to find another one! While trying to relocate the jayshrike (to no avail), we had Bornean Black Magpie, Red-billed Malkoha, Pink-necked Green Pigeon, Black-thighed Falconet, and Grey-rumped Treeswift amongst others.

We got to Kubah National Park just after it had opened and commenced the long road up the mountain. It was quite a gradual gradient and there were loads of birds to slow us down! Bornean Blue Flycatcher gave incredible views, as did nesting Black-naped Monarch and Blyth’s Paradise Flycatcher. During the morning, we found Red-naped Trogon, Scarlet-rumped Trogon, Diard’s Trogon, Grey-bellied Bulbul, Puff-backed Bulbul, Yellow-bellied Bulbul, Maroon Woodpecker, Asian Fairy-bluebird, and Chestnut-naped Forktail to name just a few of the goodies. Alas, no sight or sound of Rail-babbler or Crested Jayshrike here today though.

It was now the middle of the day so time to move on, grab some lunch and drive across to the Borneo Highlands Resort. We noted Long-tailed Shrike, Common Myna, Collared Kingfisher, and several other common and widespread species along the way. After checking into our vast accommodation, we made a plan for some afternoon birding.

Our chosen spot for birding in the Borneo Highland Resort area was near to the border viewpoint, an amazing vista over West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Immediately on arrival we were finding great birds, (Bornean/Black-faced) Banded Kingfisher, Wreathed Hornbill, Green Broadbill, Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle, Bornean Barbet, Red-throated Barbet, Rufous Piculet, Scaly-breasted Bulbul, Pygmy White-eye, Oriental Magpie-Robin, White-rumped Shama, and Temminck’s Sunbird. However, the main attractions both occurred within 30 minutes of each other as the day was fading away.

Firstly, we found a Rail-babbler not far off the road. After enjoying this for a while and starting the celebrations we commenced our walk back to the car when suddenly, secondly, a pair of Crested Jayshrikes called as they flew into view! We couldn’t believe it as these shy and secretive birds came to check us out, even allowing us to take some photos (see report cover image). The excitement (and relief) was palpable, Chuck had just completed his family list, what a phenomenal achievement! With that there was nothing else to do other than go back to our house and celebrate with a good drink and a good meal.

Day 4, 19th August 2022. Birding at Borneo Highlands Resort

We had lots of time allocated for finding the rail-babbler and jayshrike, not expecting to connect with both on our first afternoon, though there were no complaints of course! The area is wonderful for birding so we would just enjoy what we could find and try for better views/photos of the key targets and see what other interesting birds we could find over the next few days.
Right off our balcony during breakfast we had Rusty-breasted (Sunda Brush) Cuckoo, Chestnut-naped Forktail, Dayak Blue Flycatcher, Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker, and Chestnut-crested Yuhina. A stop at a patch of forest first thing gave us excellent views of Short-tailed (Glissando) Babbler, as well as Temminck’s Babbler, Horsfield’s Babbler, Sunda Scimitar Babbler, Asian Fairy-bluebird, Banded Woodpecker, and more.

Heading out along a mountain trail along the Malaysia-Indonesia border we were able to add birds to lists for both countries, which was great fun! We found Red-throated Barbet nest building and had Mountain Serpent Eagle, Scaly-breasted Bulbul, Olive-winged Bulbul, White-bellied Erpornis, Chestnut-crested Yuhina, White-rumped Shama, Black-and-yellow Broadbill, Checker-throated Woodpecker, Golden-whiskered (Golden-faced) Barbet, and Bornean Barbet on one side or another of the border, or occasionally on both sides! Inside the forest we watched Eye-browed (Whitehead’s) Wren-Babbler at close range crisscrossing the border at will, and right at the end of our walk we saw a pair of Crested Jayshrikes again, and this time they were in Indonesia! A great end to our morning birding session.

In the afternoon we headed out again and spent some time on the edge of the vast golf course and found Black Eagle, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle, lots of swiftlets and Pacific Swallows, Green Iora, Buff-rumped Woodpecker, Bornean Barbet, and Scaly-breasted Bulbul. At a different spot we again had Rail-babbler and as a thunderstorm approached we found Black-bellied Malkoha, Brown Barbet, Puff-backed Bulbul, and Rufous Piculet. In the evening we found Bornean Frogmouth, Reddish Scops Owl, and Bornean Slow Loris, but this all arrived with the onset of the rain from the thunderstorm which went through the night.

Day 5, 20th August 2022. Birding at Borneo Highlands Resort

After the heavy rain through much of the night we were pleasantly surprised to find a dry morning awaiting us, with Rusty-breasted (Sunda Brush) Cuckoo, Verditer Flycatcher, Dayak Blue Flycatcher, and Chestnut-naped Forktail serenading us from our balcony.

After breakfast we set off back to the forest along the Malaysia-Indonesia border and were met there by a Checker-throated Woodpecker and Golden-whiskered (Golden-faced) Barbet, both of which showed well. Off the border viewpoint we saw Red-billed Malkoha, Plume-toed Swiftlet, Chestnut-crested Yuhina, White-rumped Shama, and Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike. Walking into the forest, further than we had done the previous day, we recorded Temminck’s Babbler, Sunda Scimitar Babbler, Black-and-yellow Broadbill, and then heard the now familiar call of Rail-babbler. We stood and hid behind a tree for quite a while, to no avail, though the bird could be heard still, it just wouldn’t come into view. We changed our viewpoint, and in no time at all we found ourselves face-to-face with this stunning and unique bird. We enjoyed a wonderful sighting of the Rail-babbler as it jumped up onto a mossy fallen tree where it showed off for us all (for what seemed like a long time), even allowing for some photos to be taken. Amazingly we had the bird in Indonesia and then cross over the border into Malaysia – I doubt too many people have seen Rail-Babbler in two countries in the same day (or minute!). We were overjoyed by our sighting of this major trip target bird, and even the rain that was now falling didn’t dampen our spirits!

After our seriously good looks at Rail-babbler, we decided that it was time to head back for lunch, and along the way we picked up Eye-browed (Whitehead’s) Wren-Babbler, Pygmy White-eye, Blue-winged Leafbird, Scaly-breasted Bulbul, Dusky Munia, and Green Iora.

During the afternoon we visited a couple of different areas in this huge site. The best spot gave us views of White-crowned Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Thick-billed Green Pigeon, Plaintive Cuckoo, Bornean Barbet, Pygmy White-eye, Temminck’s Sunbird, Green Broadbill, and Dayak Blue Flycatcher. Once the sun had set, we enjoyed seeing the rare Bornean Frogmouth at close range, a perfect end to another excellent day of birding in Borneo.

Day 6, 21st August 2022. Birding at Borneo Highlands Resort

Our final full day of this short but highly rewarding tour saw us heading back up to the Malaysia-Indonesia border area to see what else we could eek out of the beautiful mossy forest. We had a very relaxed hour or so watching from the viewpoint. Here we found Brown-backed Needletail (along with hundreds of assorted swiftlets), Cinereous (Green-winged) Bulbul, White-crowned Hornbill, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Greater Green Leafbird, Golden-whiskered (Golden-faced) Barbet, Brown Barbet, Red-throated Barbet, Bornean Barbet, Thick-billed Green Pigeon, and several other species. After a while the cloud rolled in, and we had a period of heavy rain and low cloud until into the afternoon.

By the middle of the afternoon the weather had cleared up, so we ventured out for some more great Bornean birdwatching. We found a flowering tree that was busy with bulbuls and Black-headed Bulbul was a new trip bird. We also had Charlotte’s Bulbul, Scaly-breasted Bulbul, Spectacled Bulbul, and several other species. A fruiting tree held over a dozen Brown Barbets, as well as plenty of Blue-eared (Black-eared) Barbets, and Bornean Barbet. This tree also contained a pair of huge Wreathed Hornbills, Asian Fairy-bluebird, and Dark-throated Oriole. Nearby we had another pair of Crested Jayshrikes, allowing for further good views and right before we called an end to the day, we had a pair of Rufous-collared Kingfishers in a dark gully. Tough light but cool to see nevertheless, this is one attractive bird.

Day 7, 22nd August 2022. Birding at Borneo Highlands Resort then travel to Kuching where tour concluded with international departure

We had a final relaxed morning birding session in the Borneo Highlands Resort grounds before it was time to leave. After breakfast we drove up to the border viewpoint for a final look around. Here we found Brown-backed Needletail, Bornean Barbet, Dark-throated Oriole, White-bellied Erpornis, Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike, Green Iora, Hume’s White-eye, Rufous-crowned Babbler, Temminck’s Babbler, Verditer Flycatcher, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, and Temminck’s Sunbird. Our final sighting of note before lunch involved a vocal Mountain Serpent Eagle over our accommodation, a great way to end the tour!

After lunch we packed up and headed down off the mountain back into Kuching where the tour concluded with international departure. We must offer a huge thank you to our local team who were excellent and a joy to bird with, and once again, huge congratulations to Chuck on reaching his target of 248 families!
The trip lists for this tour follows.

This was a private family listing tour with some specific target species – please get in touch if you would like something similar (here or anywhere in the world for any species or families). We have two set departure tours in Borneo, a Sarawak tour for several localized endemics and a Sabah tour for more endemic birding and some mega mammals.
