Introduction

This report covers a birding trip to peninsular Thailand plus a short visit to KaoYai. The group consisted of myself, my brother Richard & Pete Antrobus (Tripod). We were joined by John Gregory, for the latter part of the trip. This was my first trip to Thailand, but I had birded fairly extensively in other SE Asian countries such as Malaysia & Vietnam. We did not book anything in advance other than the hire car, as we wished to keep the itinerary as flexible as possible i.e. we intended to stay at KNC until we all saw Gurney's Pitta.

Transport

I originally booked a 4 door Suzuki Vitara 4WD, but on our arrival at Bangkok, Budget announced that we had a free upgrade to a Honda CRV, which proved to be an excellent vehicle. Although Budget were the hire company, we booked through the Internet, using an agent, ISIS Travel based in Bangkok.. We arranged to collect the vehicle from the airport terminal, as Budget do not have an office at the airport, you have to lookout for the Budget rep, holding a sign with your name on it. The Budget staff were extremely helpful, giving excellent directions on how to get out of the city & giving a free 6-hour extension to the end of the hire contract.

Health

We experienced no health problems. Apparently malaria is not a problem in most of Thailand, except in remote areas such as Kaeng Krechan, as we were visiting this site I decided to play safe and take Doxycycline.

Food

Food was generally very good, even for vegetarians such as myself. The food at the Marakot Resort, KNC was particularly excellent, with meals being about 30 to 45 Baht.

Weather

Mostly dry & sunny, with a few afternoons / evenings of rain, at times quite heavy, at KNC.

Books & Tapes

Trip reports: Several reports obtained of the internet e.g. those by Graham Talbot, Nick Ransdale & Peter Ericsson.

Site Guides: Where to watch birds in Asia - Nigel Wheatley, published by Helm .

Field Guides: Birds of Thailand by Lekagul & Round and the excellent Birds of South East Asia by Craig Robson.

Sound guides: The CD ROM guide Birds of Tropical Asia (can not be played as a CD), obtained from Wildsounds, proved very useful for making recordings on to tape prior to the trip.

Money

The exchange rate was 60 Baht to the £ sterling

Accommodation

Cha-Am - Beach Front Guest House, 329 Ruam Jit Road Tel 032 472-503, we all shared 1 room which cost 400 Baht. Basic, but clean with shared showers. We stopped here en-route from Samut Sakhom to Khao Sam Roi Yat

Khao Nor Chuchi - Marakot Resort, situated near the HQ and within walking distance of the trails. Twin chalets with fan 400 Bhat per night, including breakfast, which is served from 5.30am - just pre-dawn. This excellent set-up is run by 2 Thai girls and is the place to stay when birding KNC.

Krabi - Maritime Hotel.

Kaeng Krechan - We stayed in lakeside chalets in the village, about 1Km before the main HQ and visitors centre. The chalets cost 500Bhat per chalet per night, where there is also a decent restaurant as well. We also camped at the first campsite in within the reserve.

Khao Yai N.P.. - KhaoYai Garden Lodge, P.O. Box 27, 30130 Pak Chong. E-mail khaoyaigarden@hotmail.com Web site www.cockatoo.com/khaoyai.htm . This is run by a German, who has a good knowledge of birds of KhaoYai . Highly recommended.

Sites

I have not included any specific site details, as all sites are well covered in other reports and site guides such as Where to Watch Birds in Asia.

KSRY = Khao Sam Roi Yot, KNC = Khao Nor Chuchi, KK = Kaeng Krachan NP

Itinerary

3/03 Arrived in Bangkok at about13.00, collected the vehicle and drove straight to Samut Sakhon, where we contacted Mr T. After an hour of searching he located a Spoon-billed Sandpiper on one of the lagoons. Not a bad start to the trip, Spoon-billed Sand within 4 hours of arriving in the country!

24/3 Arrived at KSRY a couple of hours after dawn & soon located a couple of Malaysian Plovers on the shore near the HQ. By 10am we were on our way to KNC. Arrived at KNC at about 16.00, booked in to the Marakot & managed an hours birding down trail S, where our first Gurney's was heard. After dark we drove the couple of kms to a nearby coffee plantation, which is a site for Javan Frogmouth, where good views were obtained of a calling bird

25/3 Up at dawn and birded trails U, N & Q. Generally very quiet birding, except for a very brief sighting of a calling male Gurneys Pitta at the start of trail U just after dawn.

26/3 Birded trails U, N, R & H, again very quite and no further sightings of any Pittas.

27/3 Having become rather bored with the 'best Pitta trails' I decided to try and see some decent birds, so opted for trails B & C, which run through good primary forest, as opposed to the secondary, degraded forest, which I had spent the previous few days birding. This proved to be a good move with probably the best birding of the trip. Met up with Yotin in the evening and arranged to go birding with him the following day.

28/3 Met Yotin at 6am and went straight to his Gurneys stakeout. After waiting about 20 minutes a pair gave excellent views slowly moving down a rattan filled gully. We then did a circuit, following trails N, H, E, D, C & B where Yotin's knowledge of the area & calls proved invaluable. We arrived back at the Marakot at about 15.00,where Yotin left us to go and collect another party of birders from the airport. After a late lunch we went to the nearby Spotted Wood Owl roost site.

29/03 Left the chalet at 5.30, for an early start on the trails B & C and found the other British birders spot lighting a Collared Scops Owl right outside the room. Just before the start of trial B a Malay Night heron, was watched sitting motionless on the track before flying into the forest. As soon as I entered trail B a male Gurneys Pitta was heard calling along the trail. After a few minutes the bird was located calling from the path. The next 10 minutes was spent watching and videoing the bird as it worked its way along the track calling regularly. The bird covered about 180 yards, and was even watched crossing a stream using a footbridge. Just after entering trail C a female Gurneys was located and watched feeding besides the track for several minutes. Drove to Krabi in afternoon. Booked into the hotel & arranged a Mr Dai boat trip through a local agent, for the following morning.

30/03 Met Mr Dai and headed into the mangroves, although many Mangrove Pittas could be heard, non-were seen (apart from a brief sighting by Pete). By mid morning Mr Dai decided to head out into the river mouth to look for Nordmaans Greenshank. As it was high tide, the waders were concentrated on the few remaining sandbanks and poles supporting the fishing nets, but this too was unsuccessful for the main target species. The afternoon was spent birding an area of mangroves to the west of town.

31/3 Again met Mr Dai for a second attempt at Mangrove Pitta, this was more successful, with 2 being seen. We started the journey back north, but this time headed up the coast road, as we hoped to find a boat that would be able to a day return to the Similan Islands for Nicobar Pigeon, the following day. We could not find any boat that would do a day return and give us more that a very brief stop at island number 4, so continued north until after dark and booked into a hotel in Chumphon.

01/04 Arrived at Kaeng Krechan, late morning, where we brought permits for the duration of our stay. The afternoon was spent driving & birding the full length of the track .

02/04 Spent the day at Kaeng Krechan, apart from lunch / siesta back at the chalet around mid day.

03/04 All day at Kaeng Krechan, apart from an afternoon siesta back at the chalet.

04/04 Spent the day at Kaeng Krechan.

05/04 Left Kaeng Krechan mid morning and drove to Bangkok Hotel in Bangkok

06/04 Left Bangkok in the morning & drove to Khao Yai, where we knew a Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo had been coming to scraps behind one of the restaurants.

07/04 The morning was spent around Khao Kai before departing for the airport in the afternoon.
