It was a great year for this species in California with small groups seen in more than one location. Here is a group of 3 birds together. Up to 5 have been seen at one time in Blythe. |

"The Calif plumage is a great study; at a distance this bird looks like a Lesser Bb; note the mantle color, dark coverts, tail band for starters. it looks like a very winter pattern has developed for gulls and the partial icing within the inner harbor has made for great loafing areas for several thousand larids . It looks like our best start to a year in a long time together with the Snowies."John Idzikowski |

This is the 2nd for New York of this Asiatic species. This lake is having an astonishing run - birders looking for the murrelet recently saw a Northern Gannet there too! |

Relatively recently split from Marbled Murrelet, Steve Mlodinow wrote an excellent review of Long-billed Murrelet status and ID in Birding in December 1997. There have been about 40 records for N. America of this Asiatic species, many from inland locations across the states. This is the second for NY. A specimen has even been recovered recently from a lake in Europe so the vagrancy potential of this species is enormous.

"A digiscoped photo of the Brown-headed Nuthatch that has been visiting the feeders of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert in South Russell, Ohio (just east of Cleveland). It was initially identified by Linda Gilbert on 20 Nov. but for the first two weeks its infrequent visits caused considerable angst among those seeking this first state record. Indeed, as of 4 Dec. it had been seen by only two other birders. Fortunately, it then became much more reliable. Even more fortunate, it was at the feeder upon my arrival after having not been seen for the previous three days!
The Gilberts should be commended on their grand hospitality in hosting this amazing rarity." Jeff McCoy |

Lesser Black-backed Gull, Milwaukee, WI, Dec 14th 2001 © John Idzikowski |
|
|
"We are finding that these dark-mantled "intermedius" types are rather suddenly becoming more common on the western Great Lakes 22 years after the first "graellsii" was found on the western shore of Lake Michigan; this one from Dec.14 is rather large; legs were a pale yellow and the eye was undetermined because of poor light. Lessers are not extremely rare with about 15 records per year in Milwaukee, mostly in October and March. Many first basic birds are missed as well and a larger bird like this could be confused with Great Black-backed." John Idzikowski |
