"This Hoary Redpoll has been coming to feeders in Electric City, WA since at least January 5th when it was found by Patrick Sullivan. I chased it with a couple of other birders on January 12th, and found it with a flock of Common Redpolls and Goldfinches. Hoary Redpolls probably do show up most years that Common Redpolls are numerous (and this year has been an exceptional year for them in Washington), but there are only 5 or 6 accepted records that I know of. Also, this is one of only two birds now that have been documented with photos and/or video. It is believe to be a female (probably imm. female) due to the amount of brownish color on the face and other marks." Charlie Wright |

"Origin questions always seem to plague extralimital waterfowl records. With supposed reintroduction efforts of Trumpeter Swans en vogue, many state records committees must grapple with what to do with birds such as these. In the meantime, most Colorado birders are happily counting these five Trumpeter Swans at McKay Lake, Adams County. Some believe that hazing efforts in and around Yellowstone National Park may be responsible for the increase in Trumpeter Swans along Colorado's Front Range." Chris Wood |

"Northern Saw-whet Owl. They are regular but rarely found wintering birds in and near the mountains of Colorado, but are rarely seen on the eastern plains, where this bird was photographed. Most good shots of these are captive or being rehabilitated." Bill Schmoker |

"This winter, New York state is enjoying a spectacular invasion of Pine Grosbeaks. Up to ninety birds have been present in the New Woodstock area, SE of Syracuse NY. Smaller groups are being recorded elsewhere, ranging from the Adirondack mountains in NE New York all the way across to the Niagara Frontier on the western edge of the state. This individual was one of at least 56 that were present along Damon Road near New Woodstock." Angus Wilson |
