"This Painted Bunting was first reported about Feb 11 in Seattle but the homeowners did not want visitors to come see the bird so it was kept secret. It is now at a different Seattle residence where this photo was taken on March 3, 2002. If accepted, this bird would represent a first state record. " M. Dossett |

Northern Mockingbird, Olympia, WA 2/26/02 © Charlie Wright |

"This mocker has been in Olympia for a couple weeks. Mockingbirds are rare but regular in Washington (this was my first for the state). This particular bird was obviously very sick. Somehow it lost all of its retrices, saving just 1 or possibly 2 of the mostly white feathers. While I observed it, it constantly flicked its head forward, and made a sneezing or coughing sound (almost similar to Least Flycatcher behavior), which is something I've never seen from mockers and I suspect this bird was having difficulty swallowing, or had something stuck in its throat." "Glaucous-winged Gulls have been showing up more regularly in recent years in Colorado, though they are still a rare find. Some of the recent ones have appeared to be hybrids with Western or Herring Gull, so it is nice to see one that appears pure-blooded. " Andrew Spencer |
